    Anxiety and Depression in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are thought to be at disproportionate risk of developing mental health comorbidities, with anxiety and depression being considered most prominent amongst these. Yet, no systematic review has been carried out to date to examine rates of both anxiety and depression focusing specifically on adults with ASD. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the rates of anxiety and depression in adults with ASD and the impact of factors such as assessment methods and presence of comorbid intellectual disability (ID) diagnosis on estimated prevalence rates. Electronic database searches for studies published between January 2000 and September 2017 identified a total of 35 studies, including 30 studies measuring anxiety (n = 26 070; mean age = 30.9, s.d. = 6.2 years) and 29 studies measuring depression (n = 26 117; mean age = 31.1, s.d. = 6.8 years). The pooled estimation of current and lifetime prevalence for adults with ASD were 27% and 42% for any anxiety disorder, and 23% and 37% for depressive disorder. Further analyses revealed that the use of questionnaire measures and the presence of ID may significantly influence estimates of prevalence. The current literature suffers from a high degree of heterogeneity in study method and an overreliance on clinical samples. These results highlight the importance of community-based studies and the identification and inclusion of well-characterized samples to reduce heterogeneity and bias in estimates of prevalence for comorbidity in adults with ASD and other populations with complex psychiatric presentations

    Genomic structure and insertion sites of Helicobacter pylori prophages from various geographical origins

    We present the full genomic sequences, insertion sites and phylogenetic analysis of 28 prophages found in H. pylori isolates from patients of distinct disease types, ranging from gastritis to gastric cancer, and geographic origins, covering most continents. The gentic diversity of H pylori is known to be influenced by these genomic elements including prophages who’s geneomes range from 22.6 to 33.0 Kbp. There was a high conservation of integration site shared in over 50% of cases with greater than 40% or prophage genomes harbouring insertion sequences (IS). Furthermore prophage genomes present a robust phylogeographic pattern, revealing four distinct clusters: one African, one Asian and two European prophage populations. There was evidence of recombination within the genome of some prophages, which resulted in genome mosaics composed by different populations, which may yield additional H. pylori phenotypes

    Probiotic Microbes Sustain Youthful Serum Testosterone Levels and Testicular Size in Aging Mice

    The decline of circulating testosterone levels in aging men is associated with adverse health effects. During studies of probiotic bacteria and obesity, we discovered that male mice routinely consuming purified lactic acid bacteria originally isolated from human milk had larger testicles and increased serum testosterone levels compared to their age-matched controls. Further investigation using microscopy-assisted histomorphometry of testicular tissue showed that mice consuming Lactobacillus reuteri in their drinking water had significantly increased seminiferous tubule cross-sectional profiles and increased spermatogenesis and Leydig cell numbers per testis when compared with matched diet counterparts This showed that criteria of gonadal aging were reduced after routinely consuming a purified microbe such as L. reuteri. We tested whether these features typical of sustained reproductive fitness may be due to anti-inflammatory properties of L. reuteri, and found that testicular mass and other indicators typical of old age were similarly restored to youthful levels using systemic administration of antibodies blocking pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-17A. This indicated that uncontrolled host inflammatory responses contributed to the testicular atrophy phenotype in aged mice. Reduced circulating testosterone levels have been implicated in many adverse effects; dietary L. reuteri or other probiotic supplementation may provide a viable natural approach to prevention of male hypogonadism, absent the controversy and side-effects of traditional therapies, and yield practical options for management of disorders typically associated with normal aging.     The emergence of health inequalities in early adulthood: evidence on timing and mechanisms from a West of Scotland cohort

    Background Evidence is inconsistent as to whether or not there are health inequalities in adolescence according to socio-economic position (SEP) and whether or when they emerge in early adulthood. Despite the large health inequalities literature, few studies have simultaneously compared the relative importance of ?health selection? versus ?social causation? at this life-stage. This study followed a cohort through the youth-adult transition to: (1) determine whether, and if so, when, health inequalities became evident according to both class of origin and current SEP; (2) compare the importance of health selection and social causation mechanisms; and (3) investigate whether these phenomena vary by gender. Methods Data are from a West-of-Scotland cohort, surveyed five times between age 15 (in 1987, N=1,515, response=85%) and 36. Self-reported physical and mental health were obtained at each survey. SEP was based on parental occupational class at 15, a combination of own education or occupational status at 18 and own occupational class (with an additional non-employment category) at older ages. In respect of when inequalities emerged, we used the relative index of inequality to examine associations between both parental and own current SEP and health at each age. In respect of mechanisms, path models, including SEP and health at each age, investigated both inter and intra-generational paths from SEP to health (?causation?) and from health to SEP (?selection?). Analyses were conducted separately for physical and mental health, and stratified by gender. Results Associations between both physical and mental health and parental SEP were non-significant at every age. Inequalities according to own SEP emerged for physical health at 24 and for mental health at 30. There was no evidence of selection based on physical health, but some evidence of associations between mental health in early adulthood and later SEP (intra-generational selection). Paths indicated intra-generational (males) and inter-generational (females) social causation of physical health inequalities, and intra-generational (males and females) and inter-generational (females) social causation of mental health inequalities. Conclusions The results suggest complex and reciprocal relationships between SEP and health and highlight adolescence and early adulthood as a sensitive period for this process, impacting on future life-chances and health

    Comparative study of the stability of bimatoprost 0.03% and latanoprost 0.005%: A patient-use study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The stability of ophthalmic preparations in multidose containers is influenced by the preservative as well as the stability of the active ingredient. Unstable drugs may require refrigeration to preserve their active ingredient level and they are more likely to degrade over time, therefore becoming more susceptible to degradation based on patient mishandling. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of molecular degradation that occurs in bimatoprost and latanoprost in a patient-use setting.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This was an open-label, laboratory evaluation of the relative stability of bimatoprost and latanoprost. Patients presently using bimatoprost (n = 31) or latanoprost (n = 34) were identified at 2 clinical sites in Brazil. Patients were instructed to use and store their drops as usual and return all used medication bottles between day 28 and day 34 after opening.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Bimatoprost demonstrated no degradation, but latanoprost degraded at various levels. The mean age of bimatoprost was 43.0 ± 3.4 days and the mean age of latanoprost was 43.9 ± 2.8 days (P = .072). The mean percentage of labeled concentration was 103.7% in the bimatoprost bottles and 88.1% in the latanoprost bottles (P < 001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study showed that bimatoprost maintained ≥100% concentration throughout the study period while latanoprost did not.</p

    Disfluências e velocidade de fala em produção espontânea e em leitura oral em indivíduos gagos e não gagos

    PURPOSE: To investigate and characterize temporal parameters of speech in spontaneous situation and in oral reading in people who stutter and who do not stutter, and investigate the relation among these variables. METHODS: Thirty participants aged between 17 and 59 years, with a minimum of 08 years of scholar education, constituted the Study Group, composed by 15 people who stutter and the Control Group with 15 people who did not stutter. Subjects on the Control and Study Group were matched by gender, age and education level. After anamnesis it was made: brief neuropsychological assessment, specific stuttering assessment and specific oral reading assessment. Disfluencies were analyzed and it was calculated speech rate on spontaneous production and oral reading. RESULTS: There were more disfluencies in spontaneous speech than in text oral reading in both groups. As to speech rate, in the Control Group, pseudoword and text reading were positively correlated, and in the Study Group, all variables were positively correlated. CONCLUSION: Speech rate and disfluencies analysis characterized both groups, either in spontaneous speech and reading situations which evidenced performance profiles differentiated by speech rate, frequency and disfluency typology. Investigation showed that people who stutter present lower values of speech rate, as well as higher occurrence of disfluencies, either on spontaneous speech and oral reading, in comparison to people who do not stutter.OBJETIVO: Investigar e caracterizar a velocidade de fala e as rupturas da fala em situação espontânea e em leitura oral, em indivíduos gagos e não gagos e investigar a relação entre essas variáveis. MÉTODOS: Trinta participantes com idades entre 17 e 59 anos e, no mínimo, oito anos de escolaridade, constituíram o Grupo Estudo, com 15 indivíduos gagos, e o Grupo Controle, com 15 indivíduos não gagos. Os indivíduos do Grupo Controle e do Grupo Estudo foram pareados por idade, gênero e nível de escolaridade. Após anamnese, foram realizadas as seguintes avaliações: neuropsicológica breve, específica da gagueira e específicas da leitura. As disfluências foram analisadas e calculou-se a velocidade da fala espontânea e na leitura oral. RESULTADOS: Ocorreram mais disfluências na fala espontânea que na leitura oral de texto, em ambos os grupos. Em relação à velocidade, no Grupo Controle, a leitura de pseudopalavras e de texto correlacionaram-se positivamente e no Grupo Estudo, todas as variáveis correlacionaram-se positivamente. CONCLUSÃO: A análise da velocidade e das rupturas de fala caracterizou ambos os grupos, tanto em situação de fala espontânea, quanto na leitura que evidencia perfis de desempenho diferenciados pela velocidade de fala, frequência e tipologia das rupturas.     Successful Small Intestine Colonization of Adult Mice by Vibrio cholerae Requires Ketamine Anesthesia and Accessory Toxins

    Vibrio cholerae colonizes the small intestine of adult C57BL/6 mice. In this study, the physical and genetic parameters that facilitate this colonization were investigated. Successful colonization was found to depend upon anesthesia with ketamine-xylazine and neutralization of stomach acid with sodium bicarbonate, but not streptomycin treatment. A variety of common mouse strains were colonized by O1, O139, and non-O1/non-O139 strains. All combinations of mutants in the genes for hemolysin, the multifunctional, autoprocessing RTX toxin (MARTX), and hemagglutinin/protease were assessed, and it was found that hemolysin and MARTX are each sufficient for colonization after a low dose infection. Overall, this study suggests that, after intragastric inoculation, V. cholerae encounters barriers to infection including an acidic environment and an immediate immune response that is circumvented by sodium bicarbonate and the anti-inflammatory effects of ketamine-xylazine. After initial adherence in the small intestine, the bacteria are subjected to additional clearance mechanisms that are evaded by the independent toxic action of hemolysin or MARTX. Once colonization is established, it is suggested that, in humans, these now persisting bacteria initiate synthesis of the major virulence factors to cause cholera disease. This adult mouse model of intestinal V. cholerae infection, now well-characterized and fully optimized, should serve as a valuable tool for studies of pathogenesis and testing vaccine efficacy

    Enhanced Eyelashes: Prescription and Over-the-Counter Options

    Women have long strived to possess long, thick, and dark eyelashes. Prominent eyes and eyelashes are often considered a sign of beauty and can be associated with increased levels of attractiveness, confidence, and well-being. Numerous options may improve the appearance of eyelashes. Mascara aims to temporarily darken, lengthen, and thicken eyelashes using a combination of waxes, pigments, and resins. Artificial eyelashes can be adhered either to the dermal margin or to individual eyelashes. Individuals may even use eyelash transplantations to improve the appearance of their eyelashes. The unique properties of eyelashes (e.g., relatively long telogen and short anagen phases compared with scalp hairs, slow rate of growth, and a lack of influence by androgens) may allow for specific aesthetic interventions to improve the appearance of natural eyelashes. Some over-the-counter (OTC) products may contain prostaglandin analogs that can affect eyelash growth, but neither the safety nor efficacy of these OTC cosmetics has been fully studied. Originally indicated for the reduction of intraocular pressure, the synthetic prostaglandin analog bimatoprost was recently approved for the treatment of hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. In a double-blinded, randomized, vehicle-controlled trial, bimatoprost safely and effectively grew natural eyelashes, making them longer, thicker, and darker. Bimatoprost was generally safe and well tolerated and appears to provide an additional option for individuals looking to improve the appearance of their eyelashes
