A study done with 20 masculine patients with a chronicle diagnose and who presented
memory'learning process disorders, coming from the Psychiatry Hospital 'Gustavo
Machin', with the objective to determine the behaviour of the serum concentrations of
Zinc. Patients where subdivided into three subgroups: chronically alcoholics with less
than fi ve days of abstinence, chronically alcoholics with more than fi ve days of abstinence
and totally chronically alcoholic; this is, both with abstinence and without it. Zinc was
determined by the atomic absorption spectrophotometer method. In patients with more
than fi ve days of abstinence, a signifi cance increase of Zinc took place
Effect of tensor couplings in a relativistic Hartree approach for finite nuclei
The relativistic Hartree approach describing the bound states of both
nucleons and anti-nucleons in finite nuclei has been extended to include tensor
couplings for the - and -meson. After readjusting the parameters
of the model to the properties of spherical nuclei, the effect of
tensor-coupling terms rises the spin-orbit force by a factor of 2, while a
large effective nucleon mass sustains. The overall
nucleon spectra of shell-model states are improved evidently. The predicted
anti-nucleon spectra in the vacuum are deepened about 20 -- 30 MeV.Comment: 31 pages, 4 postscript figures include
Higher Order Evaluation of the Critical Temperature for Interacting Homogeneous Dilute Bose Gases
We use the nonperturbative linear \delta expansion method to evaluate
analytically the coefficients c_1 and c_2^{\prime \prime} which appear in the
expansion for the transition temperature for a dilute, homogeneous, three
dimensional Bose gas given by T_c= T_0 \{1 + c_1 a n^{1/3} + [ c_2^{\prime}
\ln(a n^{1/3}) +c_2^{\prime \prime} ] a^2 n^{2/3} + {\cal O} (a^3 n)\}, where
T_0 is the result for an ideal gas, a is the s-wave scattering length and n is
the number density. In a previous work the same method has been used to
evaluate c_1 to order-\delta^2 with the result c_1= 3.06. Here, we push the
calculation to the next two orders obtaining c_1=2.45 at order-\delta^3 and
c_1=1.48 at order-\delta^4. Analysing the topology of the graphs involved we
discuss how our results relate to other nonperturbative analytical methods such
as the self-consistent resummation and the 1/N approximations. At the same
orders we obtain c_2^{\prime\prime}=101.4, c_2^{\prime \prime}=98.2 and
c_2^{\prime \prime}=82.9. Our analytical results seem to support the recent
Monte Carlo estimates c_1=1.32 \pm 0.02 and c_2^{\prime \prime}= 75.7 \pm 0.4.Comment: 29 pages, 3 eps figures. Minor changes, one reference added. Version

Asymptotically Improved Convergence of Optimized Perturbation Theory in the Bose-Einstein Condensation Problem
We investigate the convergence properties of optimized perturbation theory,
or linear expansion (LDE), within the context of finite temperature
phase transitions. Our results prove the reliability of these methods, recently
employed in the determination of the critical temperature T_c for a system of
weakly interacting homogeneous dilute Bose gas. We carry out the explicit LDE
optimized calculations and also the infrared analysis of the relevant
quantities involved in the determination of in the large-N limit, when
the relevant effective static action describing the system is extended to O(N)
symmetry. Then, using an efficient resummation method, we show how the LDE can
exactly reproduce the known large-N result for already at the first
non-trivial order. Next, we consider the finite N=2 case where, using similar
resummation techniques, we improve the analytical results for the
nonperturbative terms involved in the expression for the critical temperature
allowing comparison with recent Monte Carlo estimates of them. To illustrate
the method we have considered a simple geometric series showing how the
procedure as a whole works consistently in a general case.Comment: 38 pages, 3 eps figures, Revtex4. Final version in press Phys. Rev.
Density dependent hadron field theory for neutron stars with antikaon condensates
We investigate and condensation in -equilibrated
hyperonic matter within a density dependent hadron field theoretical model. In
this model, baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by
the exchange of mesons. Density dependent meson-baryon coupling constants are
obtained from microscopic Dirac Brueckner calculations using Groningen and Bonn
A nucleon-nucleon potential. It is found that the threshold of antikaon
condensation is not only sensitive to the equation of state but also to
antikaon optical potential depth. Only for large values of antikaon optical
potential depth, condensation sets in even in the presence of negatively
charged hyperons. The threshold of condensation is always reached
after condensation. Antikaon condensation makes the equation of state
softer thus resulting in smaller maximum mass stars compared with the case
without any condensate.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures; final version to appear in Physical Review
Biomaterials from beer manufacture waste for bone growth scaffolds
Agricultural wastes are a source of renewable raw materials (RRM), with structures that can be tailored for the use envisaged. Here, they have proved to be good replacement candidates for use as biomaterials for the growth of osteoblasts in bone replacement therapies. Their preparation is more cost effective than that of materials presently in use with the added bonus of converting a low-cost waste into a value-added product. Due to their origin these solids are ecomaterials. In this study, several techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), chemical analysis, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and bioassays, were used to compare the biocompatibility and cell growth of scaffolds produced from beer bagasse, a waste material from beer production, with a control sample used in bone and dental regenerative processes
Signatures of Thermal Dilepton Radiation at RHIC
The properties of thermal dilepton production from heavy-ion collisions in
the RHIC energy regime are evaluated for invariant masses ranging from 0.5 to 3
GeV. Using an expanding thermal fireball to model the evolution through both
quark-gluon and hadronic phases various features of the spectra are addressed.
In the low-mass region, due to an expected large background, the focus is on
possible medium modifications of the narrow resonance structures from
and mesons, whereas in the intermediate-mass region the old idea of
identifying QGP radiation is reiterated including effects of chemical
under-saturation in the early stages of central Au+Au collisions.Comment: 17 pages ReVTeX including 16 figure
A Life Framed: Serafim Alves de Carvalho's Emigrar... Emigrar: as contas do meu rosário (1986)
Published in Portugal in December 1986, by the Secretaria de Estado das Comunidades Portuguesas/Centro de estudos, as part of the series ‘Portugueses de Longe Escrevem’ series, Serafim Alves de Carvalho's Emigrar… Emigrar: as contas do meu rosário (1986) emerges at a particularly significant moment in Portuguese history. By focusing its close reading of Carvalho's account on four areas of analytical ‘framing’, to use the term proposed by Paul Longley Arthur, the article will contribute to existing critical studies of this autobiography by nuancing how Carvalho's self is constructed in the final, published text. In so doing, the article argues that the construction of Carvalho's self, and the content in Carvalho's account, including the contradictions and inconsistencies present in the final text, was constrained by publication aims
Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results
