Escape from immunotherapy: possible mechanisms that influence tumor regression/progression
Tumor escape is one major obstacle that has to be addressed prior to designing and delivering successful immunotherapy. There is compelling evidence to support the notion that immunogenic tumors, in murine models and cancer patients, can be rejected by the immune system under optimum conditions for activating adaptive and nonadaptive antitumor immune responses. Despite this capability, a large number of tumors continue to grow and evade recognition and/or destruction by the immune system. The limited success in current immunotherapeutic strategies may be due to a variety of reasons: failure of effector cells to compete with the growing tumor burden, production of humoral factors by tumors that locally block cytotoxicity, antigen/MHC loss, T-cell dysfunction, production of suppressor T cells—to name but a few causes for therapeutic ineffectiveness for the particular malignancy being treated. To optimize immunotherapy strategies, correction of immune-activating signals, eradication of inhibitory factors, and the evasion from newly developed immunoresistant tumor phenotypes need to be simultaneously considered

Prevalence and Correlates of Common Mental Disorders among Mothers of Young Children in Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania.
Although poor maternal mental health is a major public health problem, with detrimental effects on the individual, her children and society, information on its correlates in low-income countries is sparse. This study investigates the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD) among at-risk mothers, and explores its associations with sociodemographic factors. This population-based survey of mothers of children aged 0-36 months used the 14-item Shona Symptom Questionnaire (SSQ). Mothers whose response was "yes" to 8 or more items on the scale were defined as "at risk of CMD." Of the 1,922 mothers (15-48 years), 28.8% were at risk of CMD. Risk of CMD was associated with verbal abuse, physical abuse, a partner who did not help with the care of the child, being in a polygamous relationship, a partner with low levels of education, and a partner who smoked cigarettes. Cohabiting appeared to be protective. Taken together, our results indicate the significance of the quality of relations with one's partner in shaping maternal mental health. The high proportion of mothers who are at risk of CMD emphasizes the importance of developing evidence-based mental health programmes as part of the care package aimed at improving maternal well-being in Tanzania and other similar settings
Meson Thermalization in Various Dimensions
In gauge/gravity duality framework the thermalization of mesons in strongly
coupled (p+1)-dimensional gauge theories is studied for a general Dp-Dq system,
q>=p, using the flavour Dq-brane as a probe. Thermalization corresponds to the
horizon formation on the flavour Dq-brane. We calculate the thermalization
time-scale due to a time-dependent change in the baryon number chemical
potential, baryon injection in the field theory. We observe that for such a
general system it has a universal behaviour depending only on the t'Hooft
coupling constant and the two parameters which describe how we inject baryons
into the system. We show that this universal behaviour is independent of the
details of the theory whether it is conformal and/or supersymmetric.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figure
f(R) Gravities, Killing Spinor Equations, "BPS" Domain Walls and Cosmology
We derive the condition on f(R) gravities that admit Killing spinor equations
and construct explicit such examples. The Killing spinor equations can be used
to reduce the fourth-order differential equations of motion to the first order
for both the domain wall and FLRW cosmological solutions. We obtain exact "BPS"
domain walls that describe the smooth Randall-Sundrum II, AdS wormholes and the
RG flow from IR to UV. We also obtain exact smooth cosmological solutions that
describe the evolution from an inflationary starting point with a larger
cosmological constant to an ever-expanding universe with a smaller cosmological
constant. In addition, We find exact smooth solutions of pre-big bang models,
bouncing or crunching universes. An important feature is that the scalar
curvature R of all these metrics is varying rather than a constant. Another
intriguing feature is that there are two different f(R) gravities that give
rise to the same "BPS" solution. We also study linearized f(R) gravities in

Does publication bias inflate the apparent efficacy of psychological treatment for major depressive disorder? A systematic review and meta-analysis of US national institutes of health-funded trials
Background The efficacy of antidepressant medication has been shown empirically to be overestimated due to publication bias, but this has only been inferred statistically with regard to psychological treatment for depression. We assessed directly the extent of study publication bias in trials examining the efficacy of psychological treatment for depression. Methods and Findings We identified US National Institutes of Health grants awarded to fund randomized clinical trials comparing psychological treatment to control conditions or other treatments in patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder for the period 1972–2008, and we determined whether those grants led to publications. For studies that were not published, data were requested from investigators and included in the meta-analyses. Thirteen (23.6%) of the 55 funded grants that began trials did not result in publications, and two others never started. Among comparisons to control conditions, adding unpublished studies (Hedges’ g = 0.20; CI95% -0.11~0.51; k = 6) to published studies (g = 0.52; 0.37~0.68; k = 20) reduced the psychotherapy effect size point estimate (g = 0.39; 0.08~0.70) by 25%. Moreover, these findings may overestimate the "true" effect of psychological treatment for depression as outcome reporting bias could not be examined quantitatively. Conclusion The efficacy of psychological interventions for depression has been overestimated in the published literature, just as it has been for pharmacotherapy. Both are efficacious but not to the extent that the published literature would suggest. Funding agencies and journals should archive both original protocols and raw data from treatment trials to allow the detection and correction of outcome reporting bias. Clinicians, guidelines developers, and decision makers should be aware that the published literature overestimates the effects of the predominant treatments for depression
Managing and monitoring chronic non-communicable diseases in a primary health care clinic, Lilongwe, Malawi.
SETTING: Patients with chronic non-communicable diseases attending a primary health care centre, Lilongwe, Malawi. OBJECTIVE: Using an electronic medical record monitoring system, to describe the quarterly and cumulative disease burden, management and outcomes of patients registered between March 2014 and June 2015. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. RESULTS: Of 1135 patients, with new registrations increasing each quarter, 66% were female, 21% were aged ⩾65 years, 20% were obese, 53% had hypertension alone, 18% had diabetes alone, 12% had asthma, 10% had epilepsy and 7% had both hypertension and diabetes. In every quarter, about 30% of patients did not attend the clinic and 19% were registered as lost to follow-up (not seen for ⩾1 year) in the last quarter. Of those attending, over 90% were prescribed medication, and 80-90% with hypertension and/or diabetes had blood pressure/blood glucose measured. Over 85% of those with epilepsy had no seizures and 60-75% with asthma had no severe attacks. Control of blood pressure (41-51%) and diabetes (15-38%) was poor. CONCLUSION: It is feasible to manage patients with non-communicable diseases in a primary health care setting in Malawi, although more attention is needed to improve clinic attendance and the control of hypertension and diabetes

Measurement of Λ (1520) production in pp collisions at √s=7TeV and p–Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02TeV
The production of the Λ (1520) baryonic resonance has been measured at midrapidity in inelastic pp collisions at s=7TeV and in p–Pb collisions at sNN=5.02TeV for non-single diffractive events and in multiplicity classes. The resonance is reconstructed through its hadronic decay channel Λ (1520) → pK - and the charge conjugate with the ALICE detector. The integrated yields and mean transverse momenta are calculated from the measured transverse momentum distributions in pp and p–Pb collisions. The mean transverse momenta follow mass ordering as previously observed for other hyperons in the same collision systems. A Blast-Wave function constrained by other light hadrons (π, K, KS0, p, Λ) describes the shape of the Λ (1520) transverse momentum distribution up to 3.5GeV/c in p–Pb collisions. In the framework of this model, this observation suggests that the Λ (1520) resonance participates in the same collective radial flow as other light hadrons. The ratio of the yield of Λ (1520) to the yield of the ground state particle Λ remains constant as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, suggesting that there is no net effect of the hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions on the Λ (1520) yield
Quantum corrections and black hole spectroscopy
In the work \cite{BRM,RBE}, black hole spectroscopy has been successfully
reproduced in the tunneling picture. As a result, the derived entropy spectrum
of black hole in different gravity (including Einstein's gravity,
Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity and Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity) are all evenly
spaced, sharing the same forms as , where physical process is only
confined in the semiclassical framework. However, the real physical picture
should go beyond the semiclassical approximation. In this case, the physical
quantities would undergo higher-order quantum corrections, whose effect on
different gravity shares in different forms. Motivated by these facts, in this
paper we aim to observe how quantum corrections affect black hole spectroscopy
in different gravity. The result shows that, in the presence of higher-order
quantum corrections, black hole spectroscopy in different gravity still shares
the same form as , further confirming the entropy quantum is universal
in the sense that it is not only independent of black hole parameters, but also
independent of higher-order quantum corrections. This is a desiring result for
