Type Iax Supernovae
Type Iax supernovae (SN Iax), also called SN 2002cx-like supernovae, are the
largest class of peculiar white dwarf (thermonuclear) supernovae, with over
fifty members known. SN Iax have lower ejecta velocity and lower luminosities,
and these parameters span a much wider range, than normal type Ia supernovae
(SN Ia). SN Iax are spectroscopically similar to some SN Ia near maximum light,
but are unique among all supernovae in their late-time spectra, which never
become fully nebular. SN Iax overwhelmingly occur in late-type host galaxies,
implying a relatively young population. The SN Iax 2012Z is the only white
dwarf supernova for which a pre-explosion progenitor system has been detected.
A variety of models have been proposed, but one leading scenario has emerged: a
type Iax supernova may be a pure-deflagration explosion of a carbon-oxygen (or
hybrid carbon-oxygen-neon) white dwarf, triggered by helium accretion to the
Chandrasekhar mass, that does not necessarily fully disrupt the star.Comment: Author version of a chapter in the 'Handbook of Supernovae', edited

Analyzing the 3D Printed Material Tango Plus FLX930 for Using in Self-Folding Structure
Self-folding is the ability of the structure to fold and/or unfold without human intervention or any application of external manipulation. It is known that the structure of folding object consists of two essential parts. These parts are the faces and the creases. In this paper, it is assumed that the faces could be built by using solid materials, and the crease lines can be built using soft material which provides a high bent ability. Furthermore, these two materials should be combined built without using any connections between them. Fortunately, the 3D printer provides this capability. It can print two types of different materials at the same time for the same structure. Therefore, a 3D printer is chosen to fabricate a folding structure using two types of material. These types are the Vero for solid faces and Tango plus FLX930 for the soft creases lines. The soft material at hinge part (creases lines) subjected to the load directly when the structure folds. It should have a clear view of the mechanical properties of this material. Therefore, several mechanical tests for Tango FLX930 material are operated to calculate its mechanical properties and find the force that required to fold it
Lithium distribution across the membrane of motoneurons in the isolated frog spinal cord
Lithium sensitive microelectrodes were used to investigate the transmembrane distribution of lithium ions (Li+) in motoneurons of the isolated frog spinal cord. After addition of 5 mmol·l–1 LiCl to the bathing solution the extracellular diffusion of Li+ was measured. At a depth of 500 m, about 60 min elapsed before the extracellular Li+ concentration approached that of the bathing solution. Intracellular measurements revealed that Li+ started to enter the cells soon after reaching the motoneuron pool and after up to 120 min superfusion, an intra — to extracellular concentration ratio of about 0.7 was obtained. The resting membrane potential and height of antidromically evoked action potentials were not altered by 5 mmol·l–1 Li+

Non Abelian Geometrical Tachyon
We investigate the dynamics of a pair of coincident D5 branes in the
background of NS5 branes. It has been proposed by Kutasov that the system
with a single probing D-brane moving radially in this background is dual to the
tachyonic DBI action for a non-BPS Dp brane. We extend this proposal to the
non-abelian case and find that the duality still holds provided one promotes
the radial direction to a matrix valued field associated with a non-abelian
geometric tachyon and a particular parametrization for the transverse scalar
fields is chosen. The equations of motion of a pair of coincident D5 branes
moving in the NS5 background are determined. Analytic and numerical solutions
for the pair are found in certain simplified cases in which the U(2) symmetry
is broken to corresponding to a small transverse separation
of the pair. For certain range of parameters these solutions describe periodic
motion of the centre of mass of the pair 'bouncing off' a finite sized throat
whose minimum size is limited by the D5 branes separation.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, PdfLatex: references added.accepted for

How many independent bets are there?
The benefits of portfolio diversification is a central tenet implicit to
modern financial theory and practice. Linked to diversification is the notion
of breadth. Breadth is correctly thought of as the number of in- dependent bets
available to an investor. Conventionally applications us- ing breadth
frequently assume only the number of separate bets. There may be a large
discrepancy between these two interpretations. We uti- lize a simple
singular-value decomposition (SVD) and the Keiser-Gutman stopping criterion to
select the integer-valued effective dimensionality of the correlation matrix of
returns. In an emerging market such as South African we document an estimated
breadth that is considerably lower than anticipated. This lack of
diversification may be because of market concentration, exposure to the global
commodity cycle and local currency volatility. We discuss some practical
extensions to a more statistically correct interpretation of market breadth,
and its theoretical implications for both global and domestic investors.Comment: Less technical rewrite. 12 Pages, 6 Figures (.eps
(Anti-)Brane backreaction beyond perturbation theory
We improve on the understanding of the backreaction of anti-D6-branes in a
flux background that is mutually BPS with D6-branes. This setup is analogous to
the study of the backreaction of anti-D3-branes inserted in the KS throat, but
does not require us to smear the anti-branes or do a perturbative analysis
around the BPS background. We solve the full equations of motion near the
anti-D6-branes and show that only two boundary conditions are consistent with
the equations of motion. Upon invoking a topological argument we eliminate the
boundary condition with regular H flux since it cannot lead to a solution that
approaches the right kind of flux away from the anti-D6-brane. This leaves us
with a boundary condition which has singular, but integrable, H flux energy
density.Comment: 12 pages + appendices, 1 figure; v2: minor changes, version published

Supernova-Remnant Origin of Cosmic Rays?
It is thought that Galactic cosmic ray (CR) nuclei are gradually accelerated
to high energies (up to ~300 TeV/nucleon, where 1TeV=10^12eV) in the expanding
shock-waves connected with the remnants of powerful supernova explosions.
However, this conjecture has eluded direct observational confirmation^1,2 since
it was first proposed in 1953 (ref. 3). Enomoto et al.^4 claim to have finally
found definitive evidence that corroborates this model, proposing that the
very-high-energy, TeV-range, gamma-rays from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX
J1713.7-3946 are due to the interactions of energetic nuclei in this region.
Here we argue that their claim is not supported by the existing multiwavelength
spectrum of this source. The search for the origin(s) of Galactic cosmic ray
nuclei may be closing in on the long-suspected supernova-remnant sources, but
it is not yet over.Comment: 4 pages, 1 Figur
Wikipedia as an encyclopaedia of life
In his 2003 essay E O Wilson outlined his vision for an “encyclopaedia of life” comprising “an electronic page for each species of organism on Earth”, each page containing “the scientific name of the species, a pictorial or genomic presentation of the primary type specimen on which its name is based, and a summary of its diagnostic traits.” Although the “quiet revolution” in biodiversity informatics has generated numerous online resources, including some directly inspired by Wilson's essay (e.g., "http://ispecies.org":http://ispecies.org, "http://www.eol.org":http://www.eol.org), we are still some way from the goal of having available online all relevant information about a species, such as its taxonomy, evolutionary history, genomics, morphology, ecology, and behaviour. While the biodiversity community has been developing a plethora of databases, some with overlapping goals and duplicated content, Wikipedia has been slowly growing to the point where it now has over 100,000 pages on biological taxa. My goal in this essay is to explore the idea that, largely independent of the efforts of biodiversity informatics and well-funded international efforts, Wikipedia ("http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page) has emerged as potentially the best platform for fulfilling E O Wilson’s vision
Intraoperative fluid restriction in pancreatic surgery : a double blinded randomised controlled trial
Background : Perioperative fluid restriction in a variety of operations has shown improvement of: complications, recovery of gastrointestinal function and length of stay (LOS). We investigated effects of crystalloid fluid restriction in pancreatic surgery. Our hypothesis: enhanced recovery of gastrointestinal function.
Methods : In this double-blinded randomized trial, patients scheduled to undergo pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) were randomized: standard (S: 10ml/kg/hr) or restricted (R:5ml/kg/hr) fluid protocols. Primary endpoint: gastric emptying scintigraphically assessed on postoperative day 7.
Results : In 66 randomized patients, complications and 6-year survival were analyzed. 54 patients were analyzed in intention to treat: 24 S-group and 30 R-group. 32 patients actually underwent a PD and 16 patients had a palliative gastrojejunostomy bypass operation in the full protocol analysis. The median gastric emptying time (T1/2) was 104 minutes (S-group, 95% confidence interval: 74-369) versus 159 minutes (R-group, 95% confidence interval: 61-204) (P = 0.893, NS). Delayed gastric emptying occurred in 10 patients in the S-group and in 13 patients in the R-group (45% and 50%, P = 0.779, NS). The primary outcome parameter, gastric emptying time, did not show a statistically significant difference between groups.
Conclusion : A fluid regimen of 10ml/kg/hr or 5ml/kg/hr during pancreatic surgery did not lead to statistically significant differences in gastric emptying. A larger study would be needed to draw definite conclusions about fluid restriction in pancreatic surgery
