Evaluation of urinary cysteinyl leukotrienes as biomarkers of severity and putative therapeutic targets in COVID-19 patients
Background Cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLT) are potent inflammation-promoting mediators, but remain scarcely explored in COVID-19. We evaluated urinary CysLT (U-CysLT) relationship with disease severity and their usefulness for prognostication in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The impact on U-CysLT of veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) and of comorbidities such as hypertension and obesity was also assessed. Methods Blood and spot urine were collected in severe (n = 26), critically ill (n = 17) and critically ill on VV-ECMO (n = 17) patients with COVID-19 at days 1-2 (admission), 3-4, 5-8 and weekly thereafter, and in controls (n = 23) at a single time point. U-CysLT were measured by ELISA. Routine markers, prognostic scores and outcomes were also evaluated. Results U-CysLT did not differ between groups at admission, but significantly increased along hospitalization only in critical groups, being markedly higher in VV-ECMO patients, especially in hypertensives. U-CysLT values during the first week were positively associated with ICU and total hospital length of stay in critical groups and showed acceptable area under curve (AUC) for prediction of 30-day mortality (AUC: 0.734, p = 0.001) among all patients. Conclusions U-CysLT increase during hospitalization in critical COVID-19 patients, especially in hypertensives on VV-ECMO. Penetration resistance and agronomic characteristics of soybean affected by soil management and sowing speed systems
Investigation of ASR Reactivity through Slurry Dissolution Tests
The potential for alkali silica reaction (ASR) has been investigated through dissolution tests and the determination of the concentration of elemental species, Na, K, Ca and Si in the supernatant fluid of GP cement, aggregate and fly ash slurries. The aggregates selected for investigation were a reactive greywacke and a non-reactive micro-diorite both of which contain quartz. Alkali ions were delivered to the solution by the cement, although lower concentrations were released by both the aggregates and fly ash. Silica was released into solution according to aggregate reactivity. Rapid and local release of silica can yield an expansive ASR gel for reactive aggregate. Fly ash was observed to release silica rapidly indicating that the primary action of fly ash is through a competitive reaction for the formation of silica gel thus mitigating deleterious ASR. Quartz content as determined by X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that this phase was the main source of solution silica for the reactive aggregate
An Evolutionary Algorithm for the Leader-Follower Facility Location Problem with Proportional Customer Behavior
The leader-follower facility location problem arises in the context of two non-cooperating companies, a leader and a follower, competing for market share from a given set of customers. In our work we assume that the rms place a given number of facilities on locations taken
from a discrete set of possible points. The customers are assumed to split their demand inversely proportional to their distance to all opened facilities. In this work we present an evolutionary algorithm with an embedded tabu search to optimize the location selection for the leader. A complete solution archive is used to detect already visited candidate solutions and convert them into not yet considered ones. This avoids unnecessary time-consuming re-evaluations, reduces premature convergence and increases the population diversity at the same time. Results show significant advantages of our approach over an existing algorithm from the literature
Comparação entre dois penetrômetros na avaliação da resistência mecânica do solo à penetração
Compactação do solo de diferentes classes texturais em áreas de produção de cana-de-açúcar
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a existência de camadas compactadas, em três diferentes classes texturais de solos. O estudo foi desenvolvido em áreas, sob cultivo de cana-de-açúcar, da Fazenda Guanabara, localizada no município de Nova Olímpia, Mato Grosso, Brasil. Para coleta dos dados, foi utilizado um penetrômetro de impacto, modelo IAA/Planalsucar, para avaliação da resistência à penetração (RP), em três diferentes classes texturais (Areia Franca, Franco - Argilo- Arenosa e Muito Argilosa). O solo de classe textural franco-argilo-arenosa apresentou os maiores valores de resistência à penetração, entre as três classes. As classes texturais franco-arenosa e muito argilosa comportaram-se de forma semelhante, em todas as camadas. Houve semelhança na resistência à penetração das três classes texturais na camada 0,3-0,4 m
