NASA wind shear flight test in situ results
The main objectives in developing the NASA in situ windshear detection algorithm were to provide a measurement standard for validation of forward-look sensors under development, and to demonstrate the algorithm's ability to operate with a suitably low nuisance alert rate. It was necessary to know exactly how the algorithm was implemented and what parameters and filtering were used, in order to be able to fully test its effectiveness and correlate in situ results with forward-look sensor data
Optimal control of a fractional order epidemic model with application to human respiratory syncytial virus infection
A human respiratory syncytial virus surveillance system was implemented in
Florida in 1999, to support clinical decision-making for prophylaxis of
premature newborns. Recently, a local periodic SEIRS mathematical model was
proposed in [Stat. Optim. Inf. Comput. 6 (2018), no.1, 139--149] to describe
real data collected by Florida's system. In contrast, here we propose a
non-local fractional (non-integer) order model. A fractional optimal control
problem is then formulated and solved, having treatment as the control.
Finally, a cost-effectiveness analysis is carried out to evaluate the cost and
the effectiveness of proposed control measures during the intervention period,
showing the superiority of obtained results with respect to previous ones.Comment: This is a preprint of a paper whose final and definite form is with

Multichannel effects in Rashba quantum wires
We investigate intersubband mixing effects in multichannel quantum wires in
the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and attached to two terminals. When
the contacts are ferromagnetic and their magnetization direction is
perpendicular to the Rashba field, the spin-transistor current is expected to
depend in a oscillatory way on the Rashba coupling strength due to spin
coherent oscillations of the travelling electrons. Nevertheless, we find that
the presence of many propagating modes strongly influences the spin precession
effect, leading to (i) a quenching of the oscillations and (ii) strongly
irregular curves for high values of the Rashba coupling. We also observe that
in the case of leads' magnetization parallel to the Rashba field, the
conductance departs from a uniform value as the Rashba strength increases. We
also discuss the Rashba interaction induced current polarization effects when
the contacts are not magnetic and investigate how this mechanism is affected by
the presence of several propagating channels.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Stability of Closed Timelike Geodesics
The existence and stability under linear perturbations of closed timelike
geodesics (CTGs) in Bonnor-Ward spacetime is studied in some detail. Regions
where the CTG exist and are linearly stable are exhibited.Comment: 5 pages, REvTex, discussion added. PLA, in pres
Ideals generated by submaximal minors
The goal of this paper is to study irreducible families W(b;a) of codimension
4, arithmetically Gorenstein schemes X of P^n defined by the submaximal minors
of a t x t matrix A with entries homogeneous forms of degree a_j-b_i. Under
some numerical assumption on a_j and b_i we prove that the closure of W(b;a) is
an irreducible component of Hilb^{p(x)}(P^n), we show that Hilb^{p(x)}(P^n) is
generically smooth along W(b;a) and we compute the dimension of W(b;a) in terms
of a_j and b_i. To achieve these results we first prove that X is determined by
a regular section of the twisted conormal sheaf I_Y/I^2_Y(s) where
s=deg(det(A)) and Y is a codimension 2, arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay scheme of
P^n defined by the maximal minors of the matrix obtained deleting a suitable
row of A.Comment: 22 page
Axial and Vector Correlator Mixing in Hot and Dense Hadronic Matter
We study the manifestations of chiral symmetry restoration which have a
significance for the parity mixing. Restricting to pions and nucleons we
establish a formalism for the expression of the vector correlator, which
displays the mixing of the axial correlator into the vector one and unifies the
cases of the heat bath and the dense medium. We give examples of mixing
cross-sections. We also establish a link between the energy integrated mixing
cross-sections and the pion scalar density which governs the quenching factors
of coupling constants, such as the pion decay one, as well as the quark
condensate evolution.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 4 PostScript Figure
