Adding hydrogen or ammonia to the monomer-argon mixture transforms the rate-determining step from an ion-molecule interaction to a radical-molecule interaction for both monomer dissociation and polymerization

    Exocytosis from permeabilized bovine adrenal chromaffin cells is differently modulated by guanosine 5'-[gamma-thio]triphosphate and guanosine 5'-[beta gamma-imido]triphosphate

In bovine adrenal chromaffin cells made permeable either to molecules less than or equal to 3 kDa with alphatoxin or to proteins less than or equal to 150 kDa with streptolysin O, the GTP analogues guanosine 5'-[beta gamma-imido]triphosphate (p[NH]ppG) and guanosine 5'-[gamma-thio]triphosphate (GTP[S]) differently modulated Ca(2+)-stimulated exocytosis. 2. In alphatoxin-permeabilized cells, p[NH]ppG up to 20 microM activated Ca(2+)-stimulated exocytosis. Higher concentrations had little or no effect. At a free Ca2+ concentration of 5 microM, 7 microM-p[NH]ppG stimulated exocytosis 6-fold. Increasing the free Ca2+ concentration reduced the effect of p[NH]ppG. Pretreatment of the cells with pertussis toxin prevented the activation of the Ca(2+)-stimulated exocytosis by p[NH]ppG. 3. In streptolysin O-permeabilized cells, p[NH]ppG did not activate, but rather inhibited Ca(2+)-dependent catecholamine release under all conditions studied. In the soluble cytoplasmic material that escaped during permeabilization with streptolysin O, different G-protein alpha-subunits were detected using an appropriate antibody. Around 15% of the cellular alpha-subunits were detected in the supernatant of permeabilized control cells. p[NH]ppG or GTP[S] stimulated the release of alpha-subunits 2-fold, causing a loss of about 30% of the cellular G-protein alpha-subunits under these conditions. Two of the alpha-subunits in the supernatant belonged to the G(o) type, as revealed by an antibody specific for G(o) alpha. 4. GTP[S], when present alone during stimulation with Ca2+, activated exocytosis in a similar manner to p[NH]ppG. Upon prolonged incubation, GTP[S], in contrast to p[NH]ppG, inhibited Ca(2+)-induced exocytosis from cells permeabilized by either of the pore-forming toxins. This effect was resistant to pertussin toxin. 5. The p[NH]ppG-induced activation of Ca(2+)-stimulated release from alphatoxin-permeabilized chromaffin cells may be attributed to one of the heterotrimeric G-proteins lost during permeabilization with streptolysin O. The inhibitory effect of GTP[S] on exocytosis is apparently not mediated by G-protein alpha-subunits, but by another GTP-dependent process still occurring after permeabilization with streptolysin O

    Randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of music on the virtual reality laparoscopic learning performance of novice surgeons

    Background: Findings have shown that music affects cognitive performance, but little is known about its influence on surgical performance. The hypothesis of this randomized controlled trial was that arousing (activating) music has a beneficial effect on the surgical performance of novice surgeons in the setting of a laparoscopic virtual reality task. Methods: For this study, 45 junior surgeons with no previous laparoscopic experience were randomly assigned to three equal groups. Group 1 listened to activating music; group 2 listened to deactivating music; and group 3 had no music (control) while each participant solved a surgical task five times on a virtual laparoscopic simulator. The assessed global task score, the total task time, the instrument travel distances, and the surgeons' heart rate were assessed. Results: All surgical performance parameters improved significantly with experience (task repetition). The global score showed a trend for a between-groups difference, suggesting that the group listening to activating music had the worst performance. This observation was supported by a significant between-groups difference for the first trial but not subsequent trials (activating music, 35 points; deactivating music, 66 points; no music, 91 points; p=0.002). The global score (p=0.056) and total task time (p=0.065) showed a trend toward improvement when participants considered the music pleasant rather than unpleasant. Conclusions: Music in the operating theater may have a distracting effect on novice surgeons performing new tasks. Surgical trainers should consider categorically switching off music during teaching procedure

    Resource Competition on Integral Polymatroids

    We study competitive resource allocation problems in which players distribute their demands integrally on a set of resources subject to player-specific submodular capacity constraints. Each player has to pay for each unit of demand a cost that is a nondecreasing and convex function of the total allocation of that resource. This general model of resource allocation generalizes both singleton congestion games with integer-splittable demands and matroid congestion games with player-specific costs. As our main result, we show that in such general resource allocation problems a pure Nash equilibrium is guaranteed to exist by giving a pseudo-polynomial algorithm computing a pure Nash equilibrium.Comment: 17 page

    Budget-restricted utility games with ordered strategic decisions

    We introduce the concept of budget games. Players choose a set of tasks and each task has a certain demand on every resource in the game. Each resource has a budget. If the budget is not enough to satisfy the sum of all demands, it has to be shared between the tasks. We study strategic budget games, where the budget is shared proportionally. We also consider a variant in which the order of the strategic decisions influences the distribution of the budgets. The complexity of the optimal solution as well as existence, complexity and quality of equilibria are analyzed. Finally, we show that the time an ordered budget game needs to convergence towards an equilibrium may be exponential

    Reduction of the V(III) (β-(dimethylamino)ethyl)cyclopentadienyl dichloride complex [η5:η1-C5H4(CH2)2NMe2]VCl2(PMe3) with 1 equiv of Na/Hg yielded the V(II) dimer {[η5:η1-C5H4(CH2)2NMe2]V(µ-Cl)}2 (2). This compound reacted with diphenylacetylene in THF to give the V(II) alkyne adduct [η5:η1-C5H4(CH2)2NMe2]VCl(η2-PhC≡CPh). Further reduction of 2 with Mg in the presence of diphenylacetylene resulted in oxidative coupling of two diphenylacetylene groups to yield the diamagnetic, formally V(V), bent metallacyclopentatriene complex [η5:η1-C5H4(CH2)2NMe2]V(C4Ph4).

    Personhood, consciousness, and god : how to be a proper pantheist

    © Springer Nature B.V. 2018In this paper I develop a theory of personhood which leaves open the possibility of construing the universe as a person. If successful, it removes one bar to endorsing pantheism. I do this by examining a rising school of thought on personhood, on which persons, or selves, are understood as identical to episodes of consciousness. Through a critique of this experiential approach to personhood, I develop a theory of self as constituted of qualitative mental contents, but where these contents are also capable of unconscious existence. On this theory, though we can be conscious of our selves, consciousness turns out to be inessential to personhood. This move, I then argue, provides resources for responding to the pantheist’s problem of God’s person.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
