Solving second-order linear ordinary differential equations by using interactive software
Differential equations constitute an area of great theoretical research and applications in several branches of science and technology. The scope of this work is to present new software that is able to show all the steps in the process of solving a linear second-order ordinary differential equation with constant coefficients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Exotic holomorphic Engel structures on C4
A holomorphic Engel structure determines a flag of distributions
. We construct examples of
Engel structures on such that each of these distributions is
hyperbolic in the sense that it has no tangent copies of . We also
construct two infinite families of pairwise non-isomorphic Engel structures on
by controlling the curves tangent
to . The first is characterised by the topology of the set of
points in admitting -lines, and the second by a
finer geometric property of this set. A consequence of the second construction
is the existence of uncountably many non-isomorphic holomorphic Engel
structures on

Havia, contudo, um ímpeto no sentido de poder expandir os significados do texto e encontrar ecos de guerra e violência noutras latitudes.ABSTRACT - Adapting novels to the stage has been one of the favourite sites of contemporary performance. In Portugal, there is one particular writer who has inspired several performances: Gonçalo M. Tavares (b.1970). Although he is also a playwright, it has been his work as a novelist that has won him superlative recognition. In this article I will analyse two performances that are adaptations of M. Tavares’ novels. They belong to the cycle “O Reino-Livros Pretos”/ “The Kingdom-Black Books”. Sobreviver (Surviving), was directed by Lúcia Sigalho and premiered in S. Luiz Teatro Municipal (Lisbon), in February 2006; and Jerusalém (Jerusalem), was directed by João Brites / Teatro o bando, and premiered in Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon), in October 2008. The first performance, directed by Sigalho, was the outcome of a scenic writing carried out by the director and the actors, concerning the novels Um homem: Klaus Klump, A máquina de Joseph Walser and Jerusalém (and also an excerpt of O senhor Brecht). The second, directed by Brites, was based on the homonymous novel by M. Tavares and its performative matrix was closer to the original narrative. Its dramaturgy was built around the same map of horror and evil already present in the novel. There was, however, and attempt to expand the meanings of the text, disclosing echoes of war and violence in other latitudes
Age and growth of Zapteryx brevirostris (Elasmobranchii: Rhinobatidae) in southern Brazil
Age and growth studies are fundamental to successful fisheries management. Zapteryx brevirostris (Muller & Henle, 1841) is distributed off the Brazilian continental shelf and this species is assessed as "Vulnerable" in the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Thus, the objective of this study was to present previously unknown information about the age and growth of Z. brevirostris that can be used for its management, conservation, and fisheries. A total of 162 specimens were sampled, with total lengths (TL) varying between 35.7 cm and 56 cm. The vertebrae were embedded in resin, sectioned in cuts with 0.5 mm thickness and the growth bands of the vertebrae were read under a light microscope. In the studied area, Z. brevirostris ages were estimated from 4 to 10 years according to vertebrae patterns. The species reaches its maximum asymptotic size (Linf) around 56 cm (56 cm for females and 50.37 cm for males). This is the first estimate of age and growth for a species of the Zapteryx genus, and the results support the hypothesis that this ray requires future management conservation, particularly due to its slow growth rate and consequent susceptibility to overexploitation.Coordenacao de Aperfeicoamento de Pessoal de Nivel Superior (CAPES); Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, Fundacao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia) [IF/00253/2014
On the occurrence of the arrowhead dogfish, Deania profundorum (Chondrichthyes : Squalidae) off southern Portugal, with a missing gill slit
