Compact printed ultra-wideband antenna: corrugated monopole augmented with parasitic strips

© 2016 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. A novel compact microstrip line-fed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna is reported in this paper. The antenna consists of a corrugated half-ellipse monopole and three strips that act as near-field resonant parasitic (NFRP) elements. The entire UWB band (3.1–10.6 GHz) is covered from a very compact size: 19 mm × 10 mm. Two of the NFRP strips are utilized to cover more effectively the lower portion of the UWB frequency range; the third one improves the broadside gain values by 3.28 dB in the upper portion. As a consequence, this compact design maintains a stable radiation performance over the entire UWB band

Molecular Identification of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei Tapeworm in Cases of Human Sparganosis, Hong Kong

Human sparganosis is a foodborne zoonosis endemic in Asia. We report a series of 9 histologically confirmed human sparganosis cases in Hong Kong, China. All parasites were retrospectively identified as Spirometra erinaceieuropaei. Skin and soft tissue swelling was the most common symptom, followed by central nervous system lesions.published_or_final_versio

Evaluating regional emission estimates using the TRACE-P observations

Measurements obtained during the NASA Transport and Chemical Evolution over the Pacific (TRACE-P) experiment are used in conjunction with regional modeling analysis to evaluate emission estimates for Asia. A comparison between the modeled values and the observations is one method to evaluate emissions. Based on such analysis it is concluded that the inventory performs well for the light alkanes, CO, ethyne, SO2, and NOₓ. Furthermore, based on model skill in predicting important photochemical species such as O₃, HCHO, OH, HO₂, and HNO₃, it is found that the emissions inventories are of sufficient quality to support preliminary studies of ozone production. These are important finding in light of the fact that emission estimates for many species (such as speciated NMHCs and BC) for this region have only recently been estimated and are highly uncertain. Using a classification of the measurements built upon trajectory analysis, we compare observed species distributions and ratios of species to those modeled and to ratios estimated from the emissions inventory. It is shown that this technique can reconstruct a spatial distribution of propane/benzene that looks remarkably similar to that calculated from the emissions inventory. A major discrepancy between modeled and observed behavior is found in the Yellow Sea, where modeled values are systematically underpredicted. The integrated analysis suggests that this may be related to an underestimation of emissions from the domestic sector. The emission is further tested by comparing observed and measured species ratios in identified megacity plumes. Many of the model derived ratios (e.g., BC/CO, SOₓ/C₂H₂) fall within ∼25% of those observed and all fall outside of a factor of 2.5. Femtosecond nonlinear ultrasonics in gold probed with ultrashort surface plasmons

Fundamental interactions induced by lattice vibrations on ultrafast time scales become increasingly important for modern nanoscience and technology. Experimental access to the physical properties of acoustic phonons in the THz frequency range and over the entire Brillouin zone is crucial for understanding electric and thermal transport in solids and their compounds. Here, we report on the generation and nonlinear propagation of giant (1 percent) acoustic strain pulses in hybrid gold/cobalt bilayer structures probed with ultrafast surface plasmon interferometry. This new technique allows for unambiguous characterization of arbitrary ultrafast acoustic transients. The giant acoustic pulses experience substantial nonlinear reshaping already after a propagation distance of 100 nm in a crystalline gold layer. Excellent agreement with the Korteveg-de Vries model points to future quantitative nonlinear femtosecond THz-ultrasonics at the nano-scale in metals at room temperature

Global Ethics and Nanotechnology: A Comparison of the Nanoethics Environments of the EU and China

The following article offers a brief overview of current nanotechnology policy, regulation and ethics in Europe and The People’s Republic of China with the intent of noting (dis)similarities in approach, before focusing on the involvement of the public in science and technology policy (i.e. participatory Technology Assessment). The conclusions of this article are, that (a) in terms of nanosafety as expressed through policy and regulation, China PR and the EU have similar approaches towards, and concerns about, nanotoxicity—the official debate on benefits and risks is not markedly different in the two regions; (b) that there is a similar economic drive behind both regions’ approach to nanodevelopment, the difference being the degree of public concern admitted; and (c) participation in decision-making is fundamentally different in the two regions. Thus in China PR, the focus is on the responsibility of the scientist; in the EU, it is about government accountability to the public. The formulation of a Code of Conduct for scientists in both regions (China PR’s predicted for 2012) reveals both similarity and difference in approach to nanotechnology development. This may change, since individual responsibility alone cannot guide S&T development, and as public participation is increasingly seen globally as integral to governmental decision-making

Compact hyper-band printed slot antenna: Design and experiments

© 2014 European Association on Antennas and Propagation. A compact hyper-band printed antenna design is designed numerically and measurements of a fabricated prototype confirm the predicted 10:1 input impedance bandwidth and radiation characteristics. It is based on an elliptical-slot antenna augmented with a parasitic oval patch and driven with a specially engineered microstrip-line-fed elliptical tuning fork element. The total size of the final optimized antenna is 30 × 40 mm2; it exhibits a -10-dB impedance bandwidth from 2.26 to 22.18 GHz. While the hyper-band performance could be used for high fidelity pulse applications, the antenna also covers the entire ultra-wideband (UWB) spectral range from 3.1-10.6 GHz

Overcoming traditional electrically small antenna tradeoffs with meta-structures

© 2017 Euraap. Metamaterial-inspired near-field resonant parasitic (NFRP) electrically small antennas (ESAs) have been designed and experimentally validated to have not only high radiation efficiencies, but also multi-functionality, large bandwidths, high directivities and reconfigurability. These expanded capabilities have been attained by introducing more complex meta-structures, i.e., multiple NFRP elements loaded with fixed and tunable lumped elements, as well as active circuits. Different classes of passive and active NFRP ESAs that have successfully produced these effects will be reviewed, and several recently reported ESA systems will be introduced and discussed

Electrically small metamaterial-inspired antennas with active near field resonant parasitic elements: From theory to practice

© 2017 Euraap. By augmenting several classes of metamaterial-inspired near-field resonant parasitic (NFRP) electrically small antennas (ESAs) with active (non-Foster) circuits, we have achieved performance characteristics surpassing their fundamental passive bounds. The designs not only have high radiation efficiencies, but they also exhibit large frequency bandwidths, large beam widths, large front-to-back ratios, and high directivities. Furthermore, the various initially theoretical and simulated designs have led to practical realizations. These active NFRP ESAs will be reviewed and recently reported designs will be introduced and discussed
