Improving Access to Psychological Therapy: Initial Evaluation of the Two Demonstration Sites
The Government's Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) programme aims to implement NICE Guidance for people with depression and anxiety disorders. In the first phase of the programme, two demonstration sites were established in Doncaster and Newham with funding to provide increased availability of cognitive-behaviour therapy-based (CBT) services to those in the community who need them. The services opened in late summer 2006. Controlling the Precision-Recall Tradeoff in Differential Dependency Network Analysis
Graphical models have gained a lot of attention recently as a tool for
learning and representing dependencies among variables in multivariate data.
Often, domain scientists are looking specifically for differences among the
dependency networks of different conditions or populations (e.g. differences
between regulatory networks of different species, or differences between
dependency networks of diseased versus healthy populations). The standard
method for finding these differences is to learn the dependency networks for
each condition independently and compare them. We show that this approach is
prone to high false discovery rates (low precision) that can render the
analysis useless. We then show that by imposing a bias towards learning similar
dependency networks for each condition the false discovery rates can be reduced
to acceptable levels, at the cost of finding a reduced number of differences.
Algorithms developed in the transfer learning literature can be used to vary
the strength of the imposed similarity bias and provide a natural mechanism to
smoothly adjust this differential precision-recall tradeoff to cater to the
requirements of the analysis conducted. We present real case studies
(oncological and neurological) where domain experts use the proposed technique
to extract useful differential networks that shed light on the biological
processes involved in cancer and brain function
Comparison of beam generation techniques using a phase only spatial light modulator
Whether in art or for QR codes, images have proven to be
both powerful and efficient carriers of information. Spatial light modulators
allow an unprecedented level of control over the generation of optical fields
by using digital holograms. There is no unique way of obtaining a desired
light pattern however, leaving many competing methods for hologram
generation. In this paper, we test six hologram generation techniques
in the creation of a variety of modes as well as a photographic image:
rating the methods according to obtained mode quality and power. All
techniques compensate for a non-uniform mode profile of the input laser
and incorporate amplitude scaling. We find that all methods perform well
and stress the importance of appropriate spatial filtering. We expect these
results to be of interest to those working in the contexts of microscopy,
optical trapping or quantum image creation
Novel electrocardiographic criteria for the diagnosis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy
Aims: In order to improve the electrocardiographic (ECG) diagnosis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), we evaluated novel quantitative parameters of the QRS complex and the value of bipolar chest leads (CF leads) computed from the standard 12 leads.
Methods and results: We analysed digital 12-lead ECGs in 44 patients with ARVC, 276 healthy subjects including 44 age and sex-matched with the patients and 36 genotyped members of ARVC families. The length and area of the terminal S wave in V1 to V3 were measured automatically using a common for all 12 leads QRS end. T wave negativity was assessed in V1 to V6 and in the bipolar CF leads computed from the standard 12 leads. The length and area of the terminal S wave were significantly shorter, whereas the S wave duration was significantly longer in ARVC patients compared with matched controls. Among members of ARVC families, those with mutations (n = 15) had shorter QRS length in V2 and V3 and smaller QRS area in lead V2 compared with those without mutations (n = 20). In ARVC patients, the CF leads were diagnostically superior to the standard unipolar precordial leads. Terminal S wave duration in V1 >48 ms or major T wave negativity in CF leads separated ARVC patients from matched controls with 90% sensitivity and 86% specificity.
Conclusion: The terminal S wave length and area in the right precordial leads are diagnostically useful and suitable for automatic analysis in ARVC. The CF leads are diagnostically superior to the unipolar precordial leads
Evaluation of Classifier Complexity for Delay Tolerant Network Routing
The growing popularity of small cost effective satellites (SmallSats, CubeSats, etc.) creates the potential for a variety of new science applications involving multiple nodes functioning together or independently to achieve a task, such as swarms and constellations. As this technology develops and is deployed for missions in Low Earth Orbit and beyond, the use of delay tolerant networking (DTN) techniques may improve communication capabilities within the network. In this paper, a network hierarchy is developed from heterogeneous networks of SmallSats, surface vehicles, relay satellites and ground stations which form an integrated network. There is a tradeoff between complexity, flexibility, and scalability of user defined schedules versus autonomous routing as the number of nodes in the network increases. To address these issues, this work proposes a machine learning classifier based on DTN routing metrics. A framework is developed which will allow for the use of several categories of machine learning algorithms (decision tree, random forest and deep learning) to be applied to a dataset of historical network statistics, which allows for the evaluation of algorithm complexity versus performance to be explored. We develop the emulation of a hierarchical network, consisting of tens of nodes which form a cognitive network architecture. Mechanisms of Disease: Host-Pathogen Interactions between Burkholderia Species and Lung Epithelial Cells
Members of the Burkholderia species can cause a range of severe, often fatal, respiratory diseases. A variety of in vitro models of infection have been developed in an attempt to elucidate the mechanism by which Burkholderia spp. gain entry to and interact with the body. The majority of studies have tended to focus on the interaction of bacteria with phagocytic cells with a paucity of information available with regard to the lung epithelium. However, the lung epithelium is becoming more widely recognized as an important player in innate immunity and the early response to infections. Here we review the complex relationship between Burkholderia species and epithelial cells with an emphasis on the most pathogenic species, Burkholderia pseudomallei and Burkholderia mallei. The current gaps in knowledge in our understanding are highlighted along with the epithelial host-pathogen interactions that offer potential opportunities for therapeutic intervention
