Cytological characterization and allelism testing of anther developmental mutants identified in a screen of maize male sterile lines.
Proper regulation of anther differentiation is crucial for producing functional pollen, and defects in or absence of any anther cell type result in male sterility. To deepen understanding of processes required to establish premeiotic cell fate and differentiation of somatic support cell layers a cytological screen of maize male-sterile mutants has been conducted which yielded 42 new mutants including 22 mutants with premeiotic cytological defects (increasing this class fivefold), 7 mutants with postmeiotic defects, and 13 mutants with irregular meiosis. Allelism tests with known and new mutants confirmed new alleles of four premeiotic developmental mutants, including two novel alleles of msca1 and single new alleles of ms32, ms8, and ocl4, and two alleles of the postmeiotic ms45. An allelic pair of newly described mutants was found. Premeiotic mutants are now classified into four categories: anther identity defects, abnormal anther structure, locular wall defects and premature degradation of cell layers, and/or microsporocyte collapse. The range of mutant phenotypic classes is discussed in comparison with developmental genetic investigation of anther development in rice and Arabidopsis to highlight similarities and differences between grasses and eudicots and within the grasses
Silicon Derived from Glass Bottles as Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Full Cell Batteries.
Every year many tons of waste glass end up in landfills without proper recycling, which aggravates the burden of waste disposal in landfill. The conversion from un-recycled glass to favorable materials is of great significance for sustainable strategies. Recently, silicon has been an exceptional anode material towards large-scale energy storage applications, due to its extraordinary lithiation capacity of 3579 mAh g-1 at ambient temperature. Compared with other quartz sources obtained from pre-leaching processes which apply toxic acids and high energy-consuming annealing, an interconnected silicon network is directly derived from glass bottles via magnesiothermic reduction. Carbon-coated glass derived-silicon (gSi@C) electrodes demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance with a capacity of ~1420 mAh g-1 at C/2 after 400 cycles. Full cells consisting of gSi@C anodes and LiCoO2 cathodes are assembled and achieve good initial cycling stability with high energy density
China's mobility barriers and employment allocations
China's hukou system imposes two main barriers to population movements. Agricultural workers get land to cultivate but are unable to trade it in a frictionless market. Social transfers (education, health, etc.) are conditional on holding a local hukou. We show that the land policy leads to over-employment in agriculture and it is the more important barrier to industrialization. Effective land tenure guarantees and a perfect competitive rental market would correct this inefficiency. The local restrictions on social transfers favour rural enterprises over urban employment with a relatively smaller impact on industrialization
Clustering of Lyman alpha emitters at z ~ 4.5
We present the clustering properties of 151 Lyman alpha emitting galaxies at
z ~ 4.5 selected from the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey. Our catalog
covers an area of 36' x 36' observed with five narrowband filters. We assume
that the angular correlation function w(theta) is well represented by a power
law A_w = Theta^(-beta) with slope beta = 0.8, and we find A_w = 6.73 +/- 1.80.
We then calculate the correlation length r_0 of the real-space two-point
correlation function xi(r) = (r/r_0)^(-1.8) from A_w through the Limber
transformation, assuming a flat, Lambda-dominated universe. Neglecting
contamination, we find r_0 = 3.20 +/- 0.42 Mpc/h. Taking into account a
possible 28% contamination by randomly distributed sources, we find r_0 = 4.61
+/- 0.6 Mpc/h. We compare these results with the expectations for the
clustering of dark matter halos at this redshift in a Cold Dark Matter model,
and find that the measured clustering strength can be reproduced if these
objects reside in halos with a minimum mass of 1-2 times 10^11 Solar masses/h.
Our estimated correlation length implies a bias of b ~ 3.7, similar to that of
Lyman-break galaxies (LBG) at z ~ 3.8-4.9. However, Lyman alpha emitters are a
factor of ~ 2-16 rarer than LBGs with a similar bias value and implied host
halo mass. Therefore, one plausible scenario seems to be that Lyman alpha
emitters occupy host halos of roughly the same mass as LBGs, but shine with a
