Reactions to the second Cypriot bailout deal from across the European Press
Jeroen Dijsselbloem’s mixed messages on Monday in the aftermath of the bailout were widely reported, along with the national and international economic implications of the new deal, while the run-up to the negotiations on Sunday evening saw politicians across Europe attempt to shift the blame for the previous bailout deal’s most controversial dimension, the penalisation of small Cypriot savers, to Cypriot leaders
A proposito del rapporto fra Filone e gli Stoici
Despite the large number of Philonic passages collected by H. von Arnim in his edition of the Stoic fragments, Philon should not be considered as a neutral source for the Stoic philosophy, since he reviews from his own standpoint the texts on which he draws, on both exegetical and philosophical grounds. In terms of the exegesis we should keep in mind the biblical narrative, while the Stoic elements in Philon’s thought are often philosophically subservient to a transcendent Platonic perspective, which represented Philon’s framework for the most profound meaning of his biblical theology. He does not, nevertheless, falsify Stoic thought, as the philosophical ground (e.g. the unity and the «many ways of being» of God, which involves the theory of the δυνάμεις) of Stoic allegory is not rejected. The autor draws these conclusions after an analysis of Opif. 8 = SVF II 302; Sacrif 68 = SVF II 453; LA II 22 = SVF II 458; Opif 26 = SVF II 511, 512; Migrat 178 f. = SVF II 532; Migrat. 180 = SVF II 532; Opif 66 f. = SVF II 722, 745; Confus 156= SVF II 664; Spec. Philo of Alexandria
The first author in which the traditions of Judaic thought and Greek philosophy flow together in a significant way is Philo of Alexandria. This study presents a detailed and comprehensive examination of Philo's knowledge and utilization of the most popular philosophical work of his day, the Timaeus of Plato. A kind of "commentary" is given on all passages in Philo's oeuvre in which the Timaeus is used or referred to, followed by a "synthetic" account of the influence that it had on Philo's thought.; Readership

Optimization of Finite-Differencing Kernels for Numerical Relativity Applications
A simple optimization strategy for the computation of 3D finite-differencing kernels on many-cores architectures is proposed. The 3D finite-differencing computation is split direction-by-direction and exploits two level of parallelism: in-core vectorization and multi-threads shared-memory parallelization. The main application of this method is to accelerate the high-order stencil computations in numerical relativity codes. Our proposed method provides substantial speedup in computations involving tensor contractions and 3D stencil calculations on different processor microarchitectures, including Intel Knight Landing
Extreme value statistics of positive recurrent centrally biased random walks
We consider the extreme value statistics of centrally-biased random walks
with asymptotically-zero drift in the ergodic regime. We fully characterize the
asymptotic distribution of the maximum for this class of Markov chains lacking
translational invariance, with a particular emphasis on the relation between
the time scaling of the expected value of the maximum and the stationary
distribution of the process.Comment: 26 pages, 6 figure
Effects of extracts of two selected strains of Haematococcus pluvialis on adipocyte function
Recently, microalgae are arousing considerable interest as a source of countless molecules with potential impacts in the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical fields. Haematococcus pluvialis, also named Haematococcus lacustris, is the largest producer of astaxanthin, a carotenoid exhibiting powerful health effects, including anti-lipogenic and anti-diabetic activities. This study was carried out to investigate the properties of two selected strains of H. pluvialis (FBR1 and FBR2) on lipid metabolism, lipolysis and adipogenesis using an in vitro obesity model. FBR1 and FBR2 showed no antiproliferative effect at the lowest concentration in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Treatment with FBR2 extract reduced lipid deposition, detected via Oil Red O staining and the immunocontent of the adipogenic proteins PPARγ, ACLY and AMPK was revealed using Western blot analysis. Extracts from both strains induced lipolysis in vitro and reduced the secretion of interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α. Moreover, the FBR1 and FBR2 extracts improved mitochondrial function, reducing the levels of mitochondrial superoxide anion radical and increasing mitochondrial mass compared to untreated adipocytes. These findings suggest that FBR2 extract, more so than FBR1, may represent a promising strategy in overweight and obesity prevention and treatment
Operative blood loss and use of blood products after full robotic and conventional low anterior resection with total mesorectal excision for treatment of rectal cancer
To date, no studies have investigated the estimated blood loss (EBL) after full robotic low anterior resection (R-LAR) in a case-matched model, comparing it with the conventional open approach (O-LAR). Forty-nine patients in the R-LAR and 105 in the O-LAR group were matched for age, gender, BMI (body mass index), ASA (American Society of Anesthesiology) class, tumor–node–metastasis (TNM) classification and UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) stage, distance of the lower edge of the tumor from the anal verge, presence of comorbidities, and preoperative hemoglobin (Hb). EBL was significantly higher in the O-LAR group (P < 0.001); twelve units of packed red blood cells were globally transfused in the O-LAR group, compared to one unit only in the R-LAR (P = 0.051). A significantly higher postoperative Hb drop (3.0 vs. 2.4 g/dL, P = 0.015) was registered in the O-LAR patients. The length of hospital stay was much lower for the R-LAR group (8.4 vs. 12.4 days, P < 0.001). The number of harvested lymph nodes (17.4 vs. 13.5, P = 0.006) and extent of distal margin (2.9 vs. 1.9 cm, P < 0.001) were significantly higher in the R-LAR group. Open surgery was confirmed as the sole variable significantly associated (P < 0.001) with blood loss (odds ratio = 4.41, 95% CI 2.06–9.43). It was a confirmed prognosticator of blood loss (P = 0.006) when a preoperative clinical predictive model was built, using multivariate analysis (odds ratio = 3.95, 95% CI 1.47–10.6). In conclusion, R-LAR produced less operative blood loss and less drop in postoperative hemoglobin when compared to O-LAR. Other clinically relevant outcomes were similar or superior to O-LAR
