Ground state charmed meson spectra for N_f=2+1+1
We present a preliminary study of the charmed meson spectra using the
electrically neutral subset of the new Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal N_f=2+1+1
gauge configurations that utilise the 3-HEX smeared clover action. The analysis

An Analysis of the C+C Reaction Using a New Type of Coupling Potential
A new approach has been used to explain the experimental data for the
C+C system over a wide energy range in the laboratory system from
32.0 MeV to 126.7 MeV. This new coupled-channels based approach involves
replacing the usual first derivative coupling potential by a new,
second-derivative coupling potential. This paper first shows and discusses the
limitation of the standard coupled-channels theory in the case where one of the
nuclei in the reaction is strongly deformed. Then, this new approach is shown
to improve consistently the agreement with the experimental data: the elastic
scattering, single-2 and mutual-2 excitation inelastic scattering
data as well as their 90 elastic and inelastic excitation functions
with little energy-dependent potentials. This new approach makes major
improvement on all the previous coupled-channels calculations for this system.Comment: 24 pages with 9 figure

The influence of solar wind variability on magnetospheric ULF wave power
Magnetospheric ultra-low frequency (ULF) oscillations in the Pc 4–5 frequency range play an important role in the dynamics of Earth's radiation belts, both by enhancing the radial diffusion through incoherent interactions and through the coherent drift-resonant interactions with trapped radiation belt electrons. The statistical distributions of magnetospheric ULF wave power are known to be strongly dependent on solar wind parameters such as solar wind speed and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation. Statistical characterisation of ULF wave power in the magnetosphere traditionally relies on average solar wind–IMF conditions over a specific time period. In this brief report, we perform an alternative characterisation of the solar wind influence on magnetospheric ULF wave activity through the characterisation of the solar wind driver by its variability using the standard deviation of solar wind parameters rather than a simple time average. We present a statistical study of nearly one solar cycle (1996–2004) of geosynchronous observations of magnetic ULF wave power and find that there is significant variation in ULF wave powers as a function of the dynamic properties of the solar wind. In particular, we find that the variability in IMF vector, rather than variabilities in other parameters (solar wind density, bulk velocity and ion temperature), plays the strongest role in controlling geosynchronous ULF power. We conclude that, although time-averaged bulk properties of the solar wind are a key factor in driving ULF powers in the magnetosphere, the solar wind variability can be an important contributor as well. This highlights the potential importance of including solar wind variability especially in studies of ULF wave dynamics in order to assess the efficiency of solar wind–magnetosphere coupling

Web 2.0 and micro-businesses: An exploratory investigation

Emerald does not grant permission for this article to be further copied/distributed or hosted elsewhere without the express permission from Emerald Group Publishing Limited.This article was chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2013.Purpose – The paper aims to report on an exploratory study into how small businesses use Web 2.0 information and communication technologies (ICT) to work collaboratively with other small businesses. The study had two aims: to investigate the benefits available from the use of Web 2.0 in small business collaborations, and to characterize the different types of such online collaborations.
Design/methodology/approach – The research uses a qualitative case study methodology based on semi-structured interviews with the owner-managers of 12 UK-based small companies in the business services sector who are early adopters of Web 2.0 technologies.
Findings – Benefits from the use of Web 2.0 are categorized as lifestyle benefits, internal operational efficiency, enhanced capability, external communications and enhanced service offerings. A 2×2 framework is developed to categorize small business collaborations using the dimensions of the basis for inter-organizational collaboration (control vs cooperation) and the level of Web 2.0 ICT use (simple vs sophisticated).
Research limitations/implications – A small number of firms of similar size, sector and location were studied, which limits generalizability. Nonetheless, the results offer a pointer to the likely future use of Web 2.0 tools by other small businesses.
Practical implications – The research provides evidence of the attraction and potential of Web 2.0 for collaborations between small businesses.
Originality/value – The paper is one of the first to report on use of Web 2.0 ICT in collaborative working between small businesses. It will be of interest to those seeking a better understanding of the potential of Web 2.0 in the small business community.WestFocu

The Shape of Covariantly Smeared Sources in Lattice QCD
Covariantly smeared sources are commonly used in lattice QCD to enhance the
projection onto the ground state. Here we investigate the dependence of their
shape on the gauge field background and find that the presence of localized
concentrations of magnetic field can lead to strong distortions which reduce
the smearing radii achievable by iterative smearing prescriptions. In
particular, as , iterative procedures like Jacobi smearing require
increasingly large iteration counts in order to reach physically-sized smearing
radii 0.5 fm, and the resulting sources are strongly distorted. To
bypass this issue, we propose a covariant smearing procedure (``free-form
smearing'') that allows us to create arbitrarily shaped sources, including in

Nonlinear nanomechanical resonators for quantum optoelectromechanics
We present a scheme for tuning and controlling nano mechanical resonators by
subjecting them to electrostatic gradient fields, provided by nearby tip
electrodes. We show that this approach enables access to a novel regime of
optomechanics, where the intrinsic nonlinearity of the nanoresonator can be
explored. In this regime, one or several laser driven cavity modes coupled to
the nanoresonator and suitably adjusted gradient fields allow to control the
motional state of the nanoresonator at the single phonon level. Some
applications of this platform have been presented previously [New J. Phys. 14,
023042 (2012), Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 120503 (2013)]. Here, we provide a
detailed description of the corresponding setup and its optomechanical coupling
mechanisms, together with an in-depth analysis of possible sources of damping
or decoherence and a discussion of the readout of the nanoresonator state.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
