Algeria: Nonviolent resistance against French colonialism, 1830s-1950s
International audienceIn recent years, two important books have focused on the violence of the French conquest and colonization of Algeria, beginning in 1830. Le Cour Grandmaison’s Coloniser, Exterminer emphasizes the role colonies such as Algeria played in the development of military forms of violence later imported to Europe, while Brower gives a fine description of the violent means used by the French army to control the Algerian desert after the conquest. In doing so, both authors go beyond the well-known episodes of Algerian armed resistance--notably the armed resistance of Amir Abd-al-Qadir in the 1830s and '40s, and the War for Independence (1954-1962)--to re-emphasize the duration and intensity of violence in the resistance against French colonial occupation of Algeria. However, such discourse leaves little, if any, narrative space for uncovering the existence and discussing the role of other, nonviolent, forms of struggle developed by Algerians against the French colonial occupation
Extra medullar Granulocytic sarcoma: a case report of an exceptional localization
Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare type of tumor composed of extramedullary immature cells. The breast location is very rare; it accounts for less than 8% of cases. The present study reports the case of a 36-year-old female with a medical history of myelodysplastic syndrome. She was referred because of a lump in the left breast. We have diagnosed a case of granulocytic sarcoma of the breast by core biopsy. Histology and immunohistochemistry showed hypercellular smears with immature myeloid cells. The blast cells were myeloperoxidase positive.
The patient underwent a lumpectomy. Five months later, she developed a contralateral recurrence, treated by lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Three years later, she developed a recurrence in the left knee.
We report this case for its rarity and as a note of caution to a physician to consider myeloid sarcoma in the differential diagnosis of a breast lump, to provide the correct diagnosis and avoid incorrect treatment of a curable disease
High Throughput Virtual Screening with Data Level Parallelism in Multi-core Processors
Improving the throughput of molecular docking, a computationally intensive
phase of the virtual screening process, is a highly sought area of research
since it has a significant weight in the drug designing process. With such
improvements, the world might find cures for incurable diseases like HIV
disease and Cancer sooner. Our approach presented in this paper is to utilize a
multi-core environment to introduce Data Level Parallelism (DLP) to the
Autodock Vina software, which is a widely used for molecular docking software.
Autodock Vina already exploits Instruction Level Parallelism (ILP) in
multi-core environments and therefore optimized for such environments. However,
with the results we have obtained, it can be clearly seen that our approach has
enhanced the throughput of the already optimized software by more than six
times. This will dramatically reduce the time consumed for the lead
identification phase in drug designing along with the shift in the processor
technology from multi-core to many-core of the current era. Therefore, we
believe that the contribution of this project will effectively make it possible
to expand the number of small molecules docked against a drug target and
improving the chances to design drugs for incurable diseases.Comment: Information and Automation for Sustainability (ICIAfS), 2012 IEEE 6th

Co-crystal structures of furosemide:urea and carbamazepine:indomethacin determined from powder x-ray diffraction data
Co-crystallization is a promising approach to improving both the solubility and the dissolution rate of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Crystal structure determination from powder diffraction data plays an important role in determining co-crystal structures, especially those generated by mechanochemical means. Here, two new structures of pharmaceutical interest are reported: a 1:1 co‑crystal of furosemide with urea formed by liquid-assisted grinding and a second polymorphic form of a 1:1 co‑crystal of carbamazepine with indomethacin, formed by solvent evaporation. Energy minimization using dispersion-corrected density functional theory was used in finalizing both structures. In the case of carbamazepine:indomethacin, this energy minimization step was essential in obtaining a satisfactory final Rietveld refinement
Phase transitions in a gas of anyons
We continue our numerical Monte Carlo simulation of a gas of closed loops on
a 3 dimensional lattice, however now in the presence of a topological term
added to the action corresponding to the total linking number between the
loops. We compute the linking number using certain notions from knot theory.
Adding the topological term converts the particles into anyons. Using the
correspondence that the model is an effective theory that describes the
2+1-dimensional Abelian Higgs model in the asymptotic strong coupling regime,
the topological linking number simply corresponds to the addition to the action
of the Chern-Simons term. We find the following new results. The system
continues to exhibit a phase transition as a function of the anyon mass as it
becomes small \cite{mnp}, although the phases do not change the manifestation
of the symmetry. The Chern-Simons term has no effect on the Wilson loop, but it
does affect the {\rm '}t Hooft loop. For a given configuration it adds the
linking number of the 't Hooft loop with all of the dynamical vortex loops to
the action. We find that both the Wilson loop and the 't Hooft loop exhibit a
perimeter law even though there are no massless particles in the theory, which
is unexpected.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Chronic vulvar Paget’s disease: a therapeutic challenge with a review of the literature
Vulvar Paget’s disease is an uncommon adenocarcinoma of the female genital tract, occuring more often in postmenopausal Caucasian women and accounting for 1-2% of all vulvar malignancies. A 39-year-old female patient was examined for the erythematous and pruritic vulvar lesion, with biopsy and histological examination revealing vulvar Paget’s disease. We did not diagnose any associated neoplasm. The patient underwent four surgical resections for relapsed disease, varying from local excision to extended excision, including radical vulvectomy, with esthetic coverage. The margins were involved. Due to the extended target volumes, radiotherapy was rejected and the patient underwent a local topical therapy with Imiquimod 5%. The patient was free of disease, with three years of regular follow-ups. This case was challenging due to the long recurrence of the disease for approximately 26 years and due to the therapeutics issues that occurred
Supersymmetry and Gravitational Quadrupoles
We derive model independent, non-perturbative supersymmetric sum rules for
the gravitational quadrupole moments of arbitrary-spin particles in any N=1
supersymmetric theory. These sum rules select a ``preferred'' value of h=1
where the ``h-factor'' is the gravitational quadrupole analog of the
gyromagnetic ratio or g-factor. This value of h=1 corresponds identically to
the preferred field theory value obtained by tree-level unitarity
considerations. The presently derived h-factor sum rule complements and
generalizes previous work on electromagnetic moments where g=2 was shown to be
preferred by both supersymmetric sum rule and tree-level unitarity arguments.Comment: 10 pages, plain Te
Supersymmetric Sum Rules for Electromagnetic Multipoles
We derive model independent, non-perturbative supersymmetric sum rules for
the magnetic and electric multipole moments of any theory with N=1
supersymmetry. We find that in any irreducible N=1 supermultiplet the diagonal
matrix elements of the l-multipole moments are completely fixed in terms of
their off-diagonal matrix elements and the diagonal (l-1)-multipole moments.Comment: 10 pages, plain Te
