Cyclical hematuria-ureteral endometriosis: a case report

Get PDF
Little attention has been paid for the renal involvement in endometriosis, a rare and silent disorder which ultimately lead to renal failure. Involvement most commonly may be limited to single ureter (left one) and it is usually involvement extrinsically. Although cases have been reported in the literature, true incidence of ureteral involvement is still not known. The diagnosis is difficult as the disease has non-specific symptoms. Only high index of suspicion with radiological support would be helpful in early diagnosis. Early cases may be benefited with progestin or Anti-aromatase therapy, most cases need surgery, either laparoscopically or laparotomy

Zinc and copper levels in preeclampsia: a study from coastal South India

Get PDF
Background: Preeclampsia is one of the major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Though the etiology is obscure, studies indicate the role of oxidative stress and antioxidants may have a role in the prevention of preeclampsia. Micronutrients such as copper and zinc are involved in the antioxidant defense mechanism. Methods: The present study was undertaken in a medical college hospital in coastal South India to assess the serum levels of zinc and copper in women with preeclampsia and to compare them with normal pregnant women. The blood samples from 60 preeclamptic women and an equal number of controls were analyzed for zinc and copper levels. Outcome of pregnancy was analyzed and compared. Data were expressed as mean ± standard deviation. Comparison of levels of the elements between the two groups was performed by independent t test and Chi square test and P value of <0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: The serum zinc and copper levels were significantly lower in the preeclamptic group compared to the normotensives. Also preeclamptic women were older, their BMI was higher and birth weight of babies lower compared to normotensives. Conclusions: Increased knowledge about the importance of specific antioxidant micronutrients and their part in successful pregnancy outcome should be the focus for future health strategies. Low levels of maternal copper and zinc are related to preeclampsia and might have a causal role in this disease. Further investigation is needed to establish the role of these elements in this dangerous condition of pregnancy

Get PDF
Background: The prevalence of varicose veins was increasing with increasing age but a deviance from the normal prevalence of the female patients. The patho- physiology has yet not been clearly delineated but the role of certain enzymes leading to oxidative stress has been implicated in the causation of this disease. Therefore, the present study was conducted to compare the lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant status in the patients with and without varicose veins. Methods: This study was performed after the institutional ethical clearance and informed consent from all the participants. Patients who were admitted for the surgery of inguinal Hernia were taken as controls. The blood was obtained and its serum was used for the estimation of MDA, GPx, and total antioxidant status using commercially available kit, according to the manufacturer’s guidelines in the central research laboratory of the institute. The data was represented as Mean±S.D. and compared using students‘t’ test and a p value of <0.05 was considered the level of significance. Results: The Serum estimations of MDA, GPX and TAC on comparison to Normal Individuals did not show any statistical significance (p>0.05).Conclusions: The levels of MDA, GPX and TAC were at the upper limit of the normal ranges in patients of Varicose veins indicating that more on antioxidants as a measure of global stress index in varicose veins are needed to be performed in the future with different Antioxidants and Advent of investigative modalities for the same.

Photocatalytic degradation of phenolic pollutants by Nanocomposites: A systematic review and pooled analysis

Get PDF
All living things depend on water, which is a precious natural resource. Modern hydropower generation, industrial processes, and transportation increasingly rely significantly on water. Emerging contaminants are currently posing a serious threat to our environment and significantly damaging human health. To address these water-related problems, photocatalysis, one of the advanced oxidation processes, has drawn a lot of attention. The most common photocatalytic approach for the elimination of phenolic pollutants, which is one of the emerging pollutants in the aquatic environment, was determined through a systematic review of the scientific literature in the current study. Furthermore, It was thought about how independent variables like pollutant concentration, catalyst amount, radiation time, pH, and contact time might affect the process. Twelve research, all of which focused on phenolic contaminants, were included. In two studies, all 12 phenolic contaminants were eliminated. Most of the pollutants exhibited a degradation efficiency above 90%. The removal of organic contaminants from water can be accomplished with efficiency and effectiveness by using sophisticated photocatalytic treatment methods. However, the combined data support photocatalytic treatment procedures as a new technique in recent years for the removal of organic contaminants

Aim – To evaluate the colour stability and surface roughness of provisional crowns fabricated using additive and subtractive method after immersion artificial saliva, cola and saliva with reduced Ph. Methodology- 48 provisional crowns were fabricated by additive manufacturing and subtractive manufacturing and divided into 3 subgroups and immersed in artificial saliva, cola and saliva with reduced Ph. Surface roughness and colour measurements were made before and after immersion. Anova test was done to analyze the data followed by Bonferonii post-hoc multiple comparison and t test to determine statistical significance. Results- After 3 days and 7 days of immersion all samples showed increase in surface roughness with additive manufactured samples showing a significant change. The subtractive manufactured samples showed increased colour change when immersed in cola as opposed to the additive manufactured crowns which had greater colour variations when immersed in saliva with reduced Ph. Conclusion - Additive manufactured crowns show lesser surface roughness and good colour stability when subject to varying oral environment and hence can be suitably used especially in long term provisionalizatio

Get PDF
Major objective of root canal treatment is disinfection of the root canal system and elimination of microbiota. Various intracanal medicaments as an adjunct to mechanical disinection and irrigation have been used but due to the harmful effects of the commercially available agents, a need for natural alternatives is felt over the time. This in-vitro study aims to evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of natural agents Septillin and Aloe vera with Calcium hydroxide and without Calcium hydroxide on the Streptococcus mitis, E. Faecalis and Candida albicans using agar well diffusion method. The antibacterial activity was assessed by the diameter of zone of inhibition seen as clear zone around the wells. The study showed that Septillin in combination with Calcium hydroxide and alone showed considerable antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mitis, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans where as Aloe vera with Calcium hydroxide showed to be mildly effective against all three but not as effective as Septillin and Calcium hydroxide when tested alone

Rarely, do patients with indwelling medical devices or those who suffer from immunosuppression get infected by this pathogen. However, based on routine clinical and laboratory procedures, it is hard to distinguish between the meningitis caused by and that from other bacteria. Here, we report a unique case of infection in a 37-year-old immunocompetent man presenting with meningitis associated with encephalopathy and headache. He presented with severe headaches, altered sensorium, reduced sleep, photophobia, and restlessness, with a feeling of impending doom, but with no neck rigidity and fever. Trans-axial T1 and T2/FLAIR head MRI showed diffused cerebral edema, with bilateral high frontoparietal sulcal enhancement, hyperintensity along the right posterior insula-temporal region, and left parietal deep white matter. Lumbar puncture CSF examination indicated bacterial meningitis, and was identified on culture. The patient was administered intravenous ceftriaxone for seven days and dexamethasone for three days. A follow-up lumbar puncture CSF examination showed no signs of the pathogen, indicating its eradication. To our knowledge, this is the first case of causing meningitis in an otherwise healthy man with no history of indwelling medical devices or immunosuppression. This rare case of meningitis suggests that can infect healthy humans and cause meningitis
