Cavity ring-up spectroscopy for dissipative and dispersive sensing in a whispering gallery mode resonator
In whispering gallery mode resonator sensing applications, the conventional
way to detect a change in the parameter to be measured is by observing the
steady state transmission spectrum through the coupling waveguide.
Alternatively, cavity ring-up spectroscopy (CRUS) sensing can be achieved
transiently. In this work, we investigate CRUS using coupled mode equations and
find analytical solutions with a large spectral broadening approximation of the
input pulse. The relationships between the frequency detuning, coupling gap and
ring-up peak height are determined and experimentally verified using an
ultrahigh \textit{Q}-factor silica microsphere. This work shows that
distinctive dispersive and dissipative transient sensing can be realised by
simply measuring the peak height of the CRUS signal, which might improve the
data collection rate
Optomechanical Transduction and Characterization of a Silica Microsphere Pendulum via Evanescent Light
Dissipative optomechanics has some advantages in cooling compared to the
conventional dispersion dominated systems. Here, we study the optical response
of a cantilever-like, silica, microsphere pendulum, evanescently coupled to a
fiber taper. In a whispering gallery mode resonator the cavity mode and motion
of the pendulum result in both dispersive and dissipative optomechanical
interactions. This unique mechanism leads to an experimentally observable,
asymmetric response function of the transduction spectrum which can be
explained using coupled-mode theory. The optomechanical transduction, and its
relationship to the external coupling gap, are investigated and we show that
the experimental behavior is in good agreement with the theoretical
predictions. A deep understanding of this mechanism is necessary to explore
trapping and cooling in dissipative optomechanical systems.Comment: 5 page
Regional Cooperation in Asia: Long-term Progress, Recent Retrogression, and the Way Forward
"Despite soft and fragmented regionalism, intraregional flows of trade, labor, and capital grew rapidly in Asia over the last few decades. However, in recent years, there has been retrogression in all the three areas basically associated with the slowdown in growth and departure from the East Asian model in these economies. Major Asian economies are now going through a prolonged slump and suffering from a massive misallocation of its resources, both labor and capital. There is now an urgent need for enhanced institutional efforts for regional cooperation in all the three dimensions mentioned above. The process of liberalization in trade, investment, finance, and labor movements needs to continue at the national as well as international level. However, considerable progress has been made in the area of liberalization in merchandise trade in the region and easy gains have already been made. What is urgently needed now is a program for strengthening the regional financial infrastructure, which would involve a vastly increased role for the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in resource transfer within the region and establishment of an "Asian Reserve Bank" (ARB) for greater stability in exchange rates, greater financial security, and greater resource mobilization in the region.
Chronopharmacology of Anti-Convulsive Therapy
Approximately one-third of patients with epilepsy continue to have seizures despite antiepileptic therapy. Many seizures occur in diurnal, sleep/wake, circadian, or even monthly patterns. The relationship between biomarkers and state changes is still being investigated, but early results suggest that some of these patterns may be related to endogenous circadian patterns whereas others may be related to wakefulness and sleep or both. Chronotherapy, the application of treatment at times of greatest seizure susceptibility, is a technique that may optimize seizure control in selected patients. It may be used in the form of differential dosing, as preparations designed to deliver sustained or pulsatile drug delivery or in the form of ‘zeitgebers’ that shift endogenous rhythms. Early trials in epilepsy suggest that chronopharmacology may provide improved seizure control compared with conventional treatment in some patients. The present article reviews chronopharmacology in the treatment of epilepsy as well as future treatment avenues

Free volume study of poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) using positron annihilation spectroscopy as a microanalytical tool
Positron lifetimes and X-ray diffraction measurements were carried out on poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) films annealed between 25 and 215 degrees C. The positron lifetime results were used to determine the free volume and XRD data were used to determine the apparent crystallite size and crystallinity. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of 52 degrees C obtained from positron results is in agreement with that obtained by thermal analysis. The average free volume cell size is 74 Angstrom(3) in films annealed below T-g, and increases to 84 Angstrom(3) in samples annealed above T-g. Although the observed changes in positron lifetime parameters as a function of annealing temperature are small, they are significant for the kind of material investigated. Our observations are explained in terms of thermally activated chain mobility, local relaxations and long-range motions. We further estimate, for the first time, the activation energies in the amorphous and crystalline regions of the polymer using the Goldanskii kinetic relations.
