Evolutionary Signatures in the Formation of Low-Mass Protostars. II. Towards Reconciling Models and Observations
A long-standing problem in low-mass star formation is the "luminosity
problem," whereby protostars are underluminous compared to the accretion
luminosity expected both from theoretical collapse calculations and arguments
based on the minimum accretion rate necessary to form a star within the
embedded phase duration. Motivated by this luminosity problem, we present a set
of evolutionary models describing the collapse of low-mass, dense cores into
protostars, using the Young & Evans (2005) model as our starting point. We
calculate the radiative transfer of the collapsing cores throughout the full
duration of the collapse in two dimensions. From the resulting spectral energy
distributions, we calculate standard observational signatures to directly
compare to observations. We incorporate several modifications and additions to
the original Young & Evans model in an effort to better match observations with
model predictions. We find that scattering, 2-D geometry, mass-loss, and
outflow cavities all affect the model predictions, as expected, but none
resolve the luminosity problem. A cycle of episodic mass accretion, however,
can resolve this problem and bring the model predictions into better agreement
with observations. Standard assumptions about the interplay between mass
accretion and mass loss in our model give star formation efficiencies
consistent with recent observations that compare the core mass function (CMF)
and stellar initial mass function (IMF). The combination of outflow cavities
and episodic mass accretion reduce the connection between observational Class
and physical Stage to the point where neither of the two common observational
signatures (bolometric temperature and ratio of bolometric to submillimeter
luminosity) can be considered reliable indicators of physical Stage.Comment: 27 pages. Accepted for publication in Ap
Phase variation mediates reductions in expression of surface proteins during persistent meningococcal carriage
Asymptomatic and persistent colonization of the upper respiratory tract by Neisseria meningitidis occurs despite elicitation of adaptive immune responses against surface antigens. A putative mechanism for facilitating host persistence of this bacterial commensal and pathogen is alterations in expression of surface antigens by simple sequence repeat (SSR)-mediated phase variation. We investigated how often phase variation occurs during persistent carriage by analyzing the SSRs of eight loci in multiple isolates from 21 carriers representative of 1 to 6 months carriage. Alterations in repeat number were detected by a GeneScan analysis and occurred at 0.06 mutations/gene/month of carriage. The expression states were determined by Western blotting and two genes, fetA and nadA, exhibited trends toward low expression states. A critical finding from our unique examination of combinatorial expression states, “phasotypes,” was for significant reductions in expression of multiple phase-variable surface proteins during persistent carriage of some strains. The immune responses in these carriers were examined by measuring variant-specific PorA IgG antibodies, capsular group Y IgG antibodies and serum bactericidal activity in concomitant serum samples. Persistent carriage was associated with high levels of specific IgG antibodies and serum bactericidal activity while recent strain acquisition correlated with a significant induction of antibodies. We conclude that phase-variable genes are driven into lower expression states during long-term persistent meningococcal carriage, in part due to continuous exposure to antibody-mediated selection, suggesting localized hypermutation has evolved to facilitate host persistence
The Spatial Distribution of Star Formation in the Solar Neighbourhood: Do all stars form in clusters?
We present a global study of low mass, young stellar object (YSO) surface
densities in nearby (< 500 pc) star forming regions based on a comprehensive
collection of Spitzer Space Telescope surveys. We show that the distribution of
YSO surface densities in the solar neighbourhood is a smooth distribution,
being adequately described by a lognormal function from a few to 10^3 YSOs per
pc^2, with a peak at 22 stars/pc^2 and a dispersion of 0.85. We do not find
evidence for multiple discrete modes of star-formation (e.g. clustered and
distributed). Comparing the observed surface density distribution to previously
reported surface density threshold definitions of clusters, we find that the
fraction of stars in clusters is crucially dependent on the adopted
definitions, ranging from 40 to 90%. However, we find that only a low fraction
(< 26%) of stars are formed in dense environments where their
formation/evolution (along with their circumstellar disks and/or planets) may

Decreasing Blood Culture Contamination Rates in the Emergency Department
Introduction: Blood cultures (BCs) are a vital diagnostic tool for sepsis in patients with a suspected infection. Emergency departments are the primary place where BCs are drawn, but the BC contamination rates in emergency departments are the highest and most varied in healthcare. This project’s goal was to decrease the BC contamination rate below 3% (the national benchmark for BC contamination) in an ED in the Southeastern region through the implementation of a blood culture collection toolkit.
Methods: The best practices for reducing the BC contamination rate in the emergency department was determined through a thorough literature review. A cost-effective, evidence-based plan was formed to utilize emergency department resources more effectively to decrease the BC contamination rate. The BC toolkit consisted of nursing education on proper BC collection, monthly aggregate level feedback in the ED, and packaged BC collection kit.
Results: The monthly contamination rates were 3.6%, 1,7%, and 2.1% respectively during the 3-month implementation of the project. This emergency department had not had two consecutive months with contamination rates less than 3% in 3 years prior to this project. When compared to the corresponding 3 months from the previous year, there was a statistically significant decrease in the BC contamination rates during implementation. There was a clinically significant decrease in the BC contamination rates when compared to the 3 months immediately before implementation.
Discussion: As evidenced by the results of this project, emergency departments can decrease BC contamination rates to meet the national benchmark of 3% through a well-structured strategy. Further, this can be accomplished at no additional cost to the emergency department. The cost-effective nature of this project combined with a strong sense of teamwork will lead to sustainable change in emergency departments to consistently improve the quality of care given to patients
The HST/ACS Coma Cluster Survey. II. Data Description and Source Catalogs
The Coma cluster was the target of a HST-ACS Treasury program designed for
deep imaging in the F475W and F814W passbands. Although our survey was
interrupted by the ACS instrument failure in 2007, the partially completed
survey still covers ~50% of the core high-density region in Coma. Observations
were performed for 25 fields that extend over a wide range of cluster-centric
radii (~1.75 Mpc) with a total coverage area of 274 arcmin^2. The majority of
the fields are located near the core region of Coma (19/25 pointings) with six
additional fields in the south-west region of the cluster. In this paper we
present reprocessed images and SExtractor source catalogs for our survey
fields, including a detailed description of the methodology used for object
detection and photometry, the subtraction of bright galaxies to measure faint
underlying objects, and the use of simulations to assess the photometric
accuracy and completeness of our catalogs. We also use simulations to perform
aperture corrections for the SExtractor Kron magnitudes based only on the
measured source flux and half-light radius. We have performed photometry for
~73,000 unique objects; one-half of our detections are brighter than the
10-sigma point-source detection limit at F814W=25.8 mag (AB). The slight
majority of objects (60%) are unresolved or only marginally resolved by ACS. We
estimate that Coma members are 5-10% of all source detections, which consist of
a large population of unresolved objects (primarily GCs but also UCDs) and a
wide variety of extended galaxies from a cD galaxy to dwarf LSB galaxies. The
red sequence of Coma member galaxies has a constant slope and dispersion across
9 magnitudes (-21<M_F814W<-13). The initial data release for the HST-ACS Coma
Treasury program was made available to the public in 2008 August. The images

Status Report of the DPHEP Study Group: Towards a Global Effort for Sustainable Data Preservation in High Energy Physics
Data from high-energy physics (HEP) experiments are collected with
significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An
inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis
was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators
(ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and
investigated the technical and organisational aspects of HEP data preservation.
An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general
issues of data preservation in HEP. This paper includes and extends the
intermediate report. It provides an analysis of the research case for data
preservation and a detailed description of the various projects at experiment,
laboratory and international levels. In addition, the paper provides a concrete
proposal for an international organisation in charge of the data management and
policies in high-energy physics
Impact of a quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY glycoconjugate or a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine on meningococcal carriage: an observer-blind, phase 3 randomised clinical trial
Background: Meningococcal conjugate vaccines protect individuals directly, but also confer herd protection by interrupting carriage transmission. This Phase III observer-blind, randomised, controlled study evaluated the effects of meningococcal quadrivalent (ACWY) glycoconjugate (MenACWY-CRM) or serogroup B (4CMenB) vaccination on meningococcal carriage rates in young adults.
Methods: University students (aged 18–24 years) from ten sites in England were randomised to receive two vaccinations one month apart: two doses of Japanese Encephalitis vaccine (controls), two doses of 4CMenB (4CMenB), or one dose of MenACWY-CRM then placebo (MenACWY-CRM). Meningococci were isolated from oropharyngeal swabs collected before vaccination and at five scheduled intervals over one year. Primary analysis was cross-sectional carriage one month after the vaccine course; secondary analyses included comparison of carriage at any time point after primary analysis until study termination.
Findings: 2954 subjects were randomised (control, n=987; 4CMenB, n=988; MenACWY-CRM, n=979); approximately one-third of each group was positive for meningococcal carriage at study entry. By one month, there was no significant difference in carriage between controls and 4CMenB (Odds Ratios (OR) [95% CI]; 1·2 [0·8−1·7]) or MenACWY-CRM (OR [95% CI], 0·9 [0·6–1·3]) groups. From three months after dose two, 4CMenB vaccination resulted in significantly lower carriage of any meningococcal strain (calculated efficacy 18·2% [95% CI: 3·4–30·8]) and capsular groups BCWY (calculated efficacy 26·6% [95% CI: 10·5–39·9]) compared to control vaccination. Significantly lower carriage rates were also observed in the MenACWY-CRM group compared with controls: calculated efficacies 39·0% [95%CI: 17·3-55·0] and 36.2% [95%CI: 15·6-51·7] for serogroups Y and CWY, respectively.
Interpretation: MenACWY-CRM and 4CMenB vaccines reduced meningococcal carriage rates over 12 months post-vaccination and, therefore, may affect transmission where widely implemented
