On the Complexity of -Closeness Anonymization and Related Problems
An important issue in releasing individual data is to protect the sensitive
information from being leaked and maliciously utilized. Famous privacy
preserving principles that aim to ensure both data privacy and data integrity,
such as -anonymity and -diversity, have been extensively studied both
theoretically and empirically. Nonetheless, these widely-adopted principles are
still insufficient to prevent attribute disclosure if the attacker has partial
knowledge about the overall sensitive data distribution. The -closeness
principle has been proposed to fix this, which also has the benefit of
supporting numerical sensitive attributes. However, in contrast to
-anonymity and -diversity, the theoretical aspect of -closeness has
not been well investigated.
We initiate the first systematic theoretical study on the -closeness
principle under the commonly-used attribute suppression model. We prove that
for every constant such that , it is NP-hard to find an optimal
-closeness generalization of a given table. The proof consists of several
reductions each of which works for different values of , which together
cover the full range. To complement this negative result, we also provide exact
and fixed-parameter algorithms. Finally, we answer some open questions
regarding the complexity of -anonymity and -diversity left in the
literature.Comment: An extended abstract to appear in DASFAA 201
Gender gap in physical education: teachers’ attitudes towards equality
This study follows a survey-type quantitative descriptive methodology in which 526 Spanish PE teachers have taken part. Data were collected using the Likert-type Scale SDG/t (School Doing Gender /teachers), made up of 30 items separated in three subscales.
PE teachers mainly showed an adaptive attitude towards gender changes. Nevertheless, differences were observed with regard to the participants' attitude towards gender issues depending on their sex. More specifically, female teachers achieved higher scores than males. This result suggests a better training in gender issues should be carried out in order to raise awareness and update the PE teachers' knowledge, especially in the case of male teachers
Clavo gamma: indicaciones, resultados y complicaciones
complicaciones. The gamma nail has been used as osteosynthesis for the treatment of 50 proximal
fractures of femur, 28 of which (56%) were considered unstable. Regarding to consolidation, there
was one only failure with breaking of the implant (2%). The remaining patients achieved healing,
two of them requiring a second intervention in order to activate the fracture focus through
withdrawal of the distal blocking screws. These good results contrast with the complications that
appeared during intervention and inmediate postoperatory period: intraoperatory diaphyseal fissure
(8%), intraoperatory diaphyseal fracture (4%), problems with setting of distal blocking
screws (6%) and postoperatory diaphyseal fractures below the nail (4%). The gamma nail has its
indication for proximal unstable fractures of femur, as long as a rigorous surgical technique is
practiced, thus minimizing the risks of complications

A Correlation Study between Geometry of Collared Coils and Normal Quadrupole Multipole in the Main LHC Dipoles
The quality control implemented at all LHC dipole assemblers includes precise mechanical measurements of the geometry of collared coils. A cross-analysis performed between mechanical and magnetic measurements data shows a correlation between collared coils outer dimensions and the normal quadrupole multipole (b2) for one dipole assembler. The profile geometry of the single collars - as determined from 3D measurements at the collar suppliers and CERN - could not account alone for the significant left â right aperture asymmetry observed. This triggered a deeper investigation on different elements of the geometry of single collars. The results of this work show that the relative positioning of the collaring holes, allowing a small bending deformation of collars under the effect of coil pre-stress, is an important effect that generates a b2 multipole at the limit of specification. The study has deepened the understanding of the factors affecting collared coil geometry and field quality. The precision of 3D measurements at the collar suppliers and at CERN has been improved, and a tighter quality control has been introduced at the collar suppliers
New symmetrical quinazoline derivatives selectively induce apoptosis in human cancer cells
In the search of new symmetrical derivatives with anticancer activity, we have looked for novel compounds able to induce a selective proapoptotic mechanism in cancer cells. The potential antitumoral activity of several quinazoline derivatives was evaluated in vitro examining their cytotoxic effects against human breast, colon and bladder cancer cell lines. The IC(50) value of the compounds that showed cytotoxic activity was calculated. These compounds were tested for their ability to induce caspase-3 activation and nuclear chromatin degradation. Non-tumoral human cell lines were used to test the selectivity of the cytotoxic compounds against cancer cells. Several compounds showed no cytotoxicity in these cell lines. Finally, JRF12 (2,4-dibenzylaminoquinazoline) was chosen as the best candidate and its mechanism of action was studied in more detail. A time dependent evaluation of apoptosis was performed in the three cancer cell lines, followed by an evaluation of the cell cycle regulation involvement that showed a decrease of cells in G(1) phase and increase of cells in G(2) phase before cell death. 2,4-dibenzylaminoquinazoline treatment produces few changes in the expression of genes as evaluated by using oligonucleotide microarrays and Q-RT-PCR assays. In conclusion, 2,4-dibenzylaminoquinazoline is a promising anticancer drug showing cytostatic and apoptotic effects mainly in a transcription independent manner

Structural Characterization of Charcoal Exposed to High and Low pH: Implications for 14C Sample Preparation and Charcoal Preservation
Chemical and structural similarities between poorly preserved charcoal and its contaminants, as well as low radiocarbon concentrations in old samples, complicate 14C age determinations. Here, we characterize 4 fossil charcoal samples from the late Middle Paleolithic and early Upper Paleolithic strata of Kebara Cave, Israel, with respect to the structural and chemical changes that occur when they are subjected to the acid-base-acid (ABA) treatment. Differential thermal analysis and TEM show that acid treatment disrupts the structure, whereas alkali treatment results in the reformation of molecular aggregates. The major changes are ascribed to the formation of salt bridges at high pH and the disruption of the graphite-like crystallites at low pH. Weight losses during the treatments are consistently greater for older samples, implying that they are less well preserved. Based on the changes observed in vitro due to pH fluctuations, various methods for removing contamination, as well as a mechanism for preferential preservation of charcoal in nature, are proposed.Anthropolog
A FETI method with a mesh independent condition number for the iteration matrix
We introduce a framework for FETI methods using ideas from the
decomposition via Lagrange multipliers of H1 0 (Ω) derived by Raviart-Thomas [22] P.-A. Raviart, J.-M. Thomas, Primal Hybrid Finite Element Metho and complemented with the detailed work on polygonal domains developed by Grisvard [17] P. Grisvard, Singularities in Boundary value problems. Recherches en Mathématiques Appliquées, 22. Masson, 1992.. We compute the action of the Lagrange multipliers using the natural H 1/2 00 scalar product, therefore no consistency error appears. As a byproduct, we obtain that the condition number for the iteration matrix is independent of the mesh size and there is no need for preconditioning. This result improves the standard asymptotic bound for this condition number shown by Mandel-Tezaur in [19] J. Mandel, R. Tezaur, Convergence of a substructuring method with Lagrange multipliers. Numer. Math., 73 (1996), 473–487. Numerical results that confirm our theoretical analysis are presented.

Factors determining social participation in the first year after kidney transplantation: a prospective study
BACKGROUND: This study describes changes in social participation in the first year after kidney transplantation and examines the influence of clinical factors, health status, transplantation-related symptoms, and psychological characteristics on change in social participation. METHODS: A prospective study was performed on a cohort of primary kidney transplant recipients, transplanted between March 2002 and March 2003. Data on participation in obligatory activities (i.e., employment, education, household tasks) and leisure activities (i.e., volunteer work, assisting others, sports, clubs/associations, recreation, socializing, going out) were collected by in-home interviews (n=61) at 3 months (T1) and 1 year posttransplantation (T2). Analysis of covariance was performed. RESULTS: Data showed an increase in participation in obligatory activities and diversity of leisure participation between T1 and T2, although pre-end-stage renal disease level was not regained and differed from the general population. On T1, the majority of employed recipients were on sick leave, but returned to work on T2. Employment rate remained stable. An increase in obligatory participation was predicted by clinical factors (i.e., peritoneal dialysis, initial hospitalization), whereas change in leisure participation was related to serum albumin and cognitive capacity. No effects were found for type of donation, comorbidity, and renal function. CONCLUSIONS: We found that mainly clinical factors were associated with an increase in participation in society. Although health-status related factors and the psychological attribute self-efficacy may be related to recovery of social participation, their effect was outweighed by the strength of clinical predictors in multivariate analysis
Defending the genome from the enemy within:mechanisms of retrotransposon suppression in the mouse germline
The viability of any species requires that the genome is kept stable as it is transmitted from generation to generation by the germ cells. One of the challenges to transgenerational genome stability is the potential mutagenic activity of transposable genetic elements, particularly retrotransposons. There are many different types of retrotransposon in mammalian genomes, and these target different points in germline development to amplify and integrate into new genomic locations. Germ cells, and their pluripotent developmental precursors, have evolved a variety of genome defence mechanisms that suppress retrotransposon activity and maintain genome stability across the generations. Here, we review recent advances in understanding how retrotransposon activity is suppressed in the mammalian germline, how genes involved in germline genome defence mechanisms are regulated, and the consequences of mutating these genome defence genes for the developing germline
