An Evaluation of a Parochial School Education
The purpose of this study was an attempt to evaluate the elementary training of a particular parochial school.
The scope of this study was:
l. To learn what are the stated aims and objectives of a certain parochial school.
2. To investigate whether the stated parochial school has reached its aims and objectives.
3. To compare the results of the investigation with the results of other similar studies.
4. To make a statement as to what degree the parochial schools are reaching their aims as far as such a statement can be made on the basis of this and other studies of a similar nature
Alleged Discrepancies of Second Samuel
The purpose then, of this treatise regarding the Second Book of Samuel is to examine the discrepancies, expressly alleged by critical scholars. Are the objections raised against the passages involved justified! Must the inaccuracies be ascribed to a certain•·document, a later redactor, or reviser! Are the discrepancies real or merely apparent! These are the questions which come into consideration
The God of the Universe and I. A Devotional Study of Psalm 139
One must grow up with this psalm to get into the mood of the psalmist and to learn to pray with him. How vividly we remember the first time we read this psalm alone as a child that had just learned to read! What terror it struck into the heart! For a long time this psalm was avoided. Later, much later, when this psalm was encountered again, the terror had all gone. Trust, security, and assurance had taken its place. In the family circle it became known as the birthday psalm and is the prayer for that day
Reflections of a Lover of the Scriptures and Nature
One of the theses which Ayres would nail to the laboratory door is: That we can keep science and belief separate by relegating our religion to the Sabbath day. The implication of this seems to be that a man cannot at one and the same time be religious and scientific any more than he can be a child of the world and a child of God at one and the same time. Religion and science are incompatible, some think. But are they
Some Phases of After His Kind in the Light of Modem Science
Some would estimate the number of species of animals to be about 1,073,000. Others say that there are about 3,000,000 species of animals. The wide range of difference between these two estimates is due to the diversity of opinion as to the concept species. Since evolution is the background of modern biology, the term species is accordingly defined as an evolving group and net as an aggregation with set bounds and limits. Darwin\u27s Origin of Species takes this view. Opposed to this view is that of the Bible, which speaks of natural groups of plants and animals and calls such a group min (Hebrew), kind (King James), Art (Luther), Gen. 1:11, 12, 21, 24, 25. The problem, then, may be stated thus: Either one may assign each living thing to a group called species, which gradually merges into other similar groups; or one may assign each organism to a group, a kind, which has strict boundaries and limits and which, because it has such sharp lines of demarcation, cannot be called a species as the term is now generally understood
Natural Science with Reference to Genesis 1
A discussion of this problem has its pitfalls. There is danger of getting lost in a maze of conflicting opinions at the very start. The moment one turns to the Genesis account, the mind is flooded with associations coming from the outside. Besides, it calls for conscious effort to keep the mind from being swayed by one or the other of the many interpretations which have been presented. But if we seek a solution of some of the many problems which arise with respect to the relation of science and Genesis, we shall have to keep close to the text. If any solution is to be found, it must come from the Scriptures and not primarily from interpretation or from expert scientific opinion. Sasse seems to think that the solution of the problem of the theological interpretation of the opening chapter of Genesis has in some instances, if not in many, consisted in merely repeating what had already been said by others
The Other Understanding of the Inspiration Texts
In this article the author evaluates the notes of Franz Pieper on the inspiration of Scripture, presents a summary of Herman Sasse\u27s view on inspiration, and then offers certain counsel concerning the proper understanding of the inspiration of the Scriptures
The Christian World View and the New Era in Science
The present article will concern itself chiefly with man\u27s mastery over nature by means of the intellectual capacities which God has so lavishly bestowed on him and which God preserves even today, even though man has not fulfilled the intentions of God for the created world. It will also show that the vitiation of God\u27s intentions and purposes for man and the created world is in the process of being resolved even now
Some Scriptural Aspects of Processes in Nature
Nature is like a veil. It both reveals and conceals the truth. What William Taylor says of the parable may also be applied to nature: ... a cloud luminous to some, yet dark to others; the enveilment, but also the unveiling, of the truth to men. If nature appeals only to our intellect, we shall see only that which lies on the surface
