Lexical stress information modulates the time-course of spoken-word recognition
Segmental as well as suprasegmental information is used by Dutch listeners to recognize words. The time-course of the effect of suprasegmental stress information on spoken-word recognition was investigated in a previous study, in which we tracked Dutch listeners' looks to arrays of four printed words as they listened to spoken sentences. Each target was displayed along with a competitor that did not differ segmentally in its first two syllables but differed in stress placement (e.g., 'CENtimeter' and 'sentiMENT'). The listeners' eye-movements showed that stress information is used to recognize the target before distinct segmental information is available. Here, we examine the role of durational information in this effect. Two experiments showed that initial-syllable duration, as a cue to lexical stress, is not interpreted dependent on the speaking rate of the preceding carrier sentence. This still held when other stress cues like pitch and amplitude were removed. Rather, the speaking rate of the preceding carrier affected the speed of word recognition globally, even though the rate of the target itself was not altered. Stress information modulated lexical competition, but did so independently of the rate of the preceding carrier, even if duration was the only stress cue present

A new class of polymers is provided, namely, poly (diarylsiloxy) arylazines. These novel polymers have a basic chemical composition which has the property of stabilizing the optical and physical properties of the polymer against the degradative effect of ultraviolet light and high temperatures. This stabilization occurs at wavelengths including those shorter than found on the surface of the earth and in the absence or presence of oxygen, making the polymers useful for high performance coating applications in extraterrestrial space as well as similar applications in terrestrial service. Speaking rate and spectral context affect the Dutch /a/ - /aa/ contrast
Dutch minimal word pairs such as 'gaas'-'gas' ("gauze"-"gas") differ in durational and spectral aspects of their vowels. These cues, however, are interpreted relative to the context in which they are heard. In a fast context, an "a" sounds relatively longer and is more likely to be interpreted as "aa". Similarly, when low frequencies in a context are perceived as dominant, high frequencies in the "a" become more salient, again more often leading to perception of "aa". A categorization experiment in which durational and spectral cues to the vowels were varied confirmed that Dutch listeners use both dimensions to distinguish between "a" and "aa". In Experiment 2, words were presented in rate- and spectrally manipulated sentences. Listeners, as predicted, interpreted the vowels relative to the context. An eye-tracking experiment will investigate the time course of these context effects and thus inform theories of the role of context in speech recognition
Receptor interaction profiles of novel N-2-methoxybenzyl (NBOMe) derivatives of 2,5-dimethoxy-substituted phenethylamines (2C drugs)
N-2-methoxybenzyl-phenethylamines (NBOMe drugs) are newly used psychoactive substances with poorly defined pharmacological properties. The aim of the present study was to characterize the receptor binding profiles of a series of NBOMe drugs compared with their 2,5-dimethoxy-phenethylamine analogs (2C drugs) and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in vitro.; We investigated the binding affinities of 2C drugs (2C-B, 2C-C, 2C-D, 2C-E, 2C-H, 2C-I, 2C-N, 2C-P, 2C-T-2, 2C-T-4, 2C-T-7, and mescaline), their NBOMe analogs, and LSD at monoamine receptors and determined functional 5-hydroxytryptamine-2A (5-HT2A) and 5-HT2B receptor activation. Binding at and the inhibition of monoamine uptake transporters were also determined. Human cells that were transfected with the respective human receptors or transporters were used (with the exception of trace amine-associated receptor-1 [TAAR1], in which rat/mouse receptors were used).; All of the compounds potently interacted with serotonergic 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B, 5-HT2C receptors and rat TAAR1 (most Ki and EC50: <1 μM). The N-2-methoxybenzyl substitution of 2C drugs increased the binding affinity at serotonergic 5-HT2A, 5-HT2C, adrenergic α1, dopaminergic D1-3, and histaminergic H1 receptors and monoamine transporters but reduced binding to 5-HT1A receptors and TAAR1. As a result, NBOMe drugs were very potent 5-HT2A receptor agonists (EC50: 0.04-0.5 μM) with high 5-HT2A/5-HT1A selectivity and affinity for adrenergic α1 receptors (Ki: 0.3-0.9 μM) and TAAR1 (Ki: 0.06-2.2 μM), similar to LSD, but not dopaminergic D1-3 receptors (most Ki:>1 μM), unlike LSD.; The binding profile of NBOMe drugs predicts strong hallucinogenic effects, similar to LSD, but possibly more stimulant properties because of α1 receptor interactions
Interference, reduced action, and trajectories
Instead of investigating the interference between two stationary, rectilinear
wave functions in a trajectory representation by examining the two rectilinear
wave functions individually, we examine a dichromatic wave function that is
synthesized from the two interfering wave functions. The physics of
interference is contained in the reduced action for the dichromatic wave
function. As this reduced action is a generator of the motion for the
dichromatic wave function, it determines the dichromatic wave function's
trajectory. The quantum effective mass renders insight into the behavior of the

Critical currents in Josephson junctions with macroscopic defects
The critical currents in Josephson junctions of conventional superconductors
with macroscopic defects are calculated for different defect critical current
densities as a function of the magnetic field. We also study the evolution of
the different modes with the defect position, at zero external field. We study
the stability of the solutions and derive simple arguments, that could help the
defect characterization. In most cases a reentrant behavior is seen, where both

Systematic evaluation of clinical predictors of aggressive ulcerative colitis
Background: Studies evaluating risk factors associated with an "aggressive" disease course in ulcerative colitis (UC) are scarce. A recent definition of "aggressive" UC incorporated the following
characteristics: 1) high relapse rate, 2) need for surgery, 3) development of colorectal cancer, and 4) presence of extraintestinal manifestations (EIM). The following factors for an aggressive / disabling disease course in UC have been identified so far: age < 40 years at S140 Poster presentations UC diagnosis, pancolitis, concomitant primary sclerosing cholangitis, and deep ulcerations of the colonic mucosa. We aimed to evaluate risk factors for an "aggressive" disease course in UC patients.
Methods: Data from the Swiss IBD cohort study were analyzed. Patients were recruited from university centers (80%), regional hospitals (19%), and private practices (1%). We applied the following definition for "aggressive" UC: 1) patients ever treated with TNFantagonists or calcineurin inhibitors (tacrolimus / cyclosporine), and 2) need for (procto)-colectomy.
