Learning through movement is a teaching method in which physical movement is considered a central teaching and learning tool. It is intended to support the learning process and lead to better information processing and retention in learners of all ages. Despite this, however, physical activity is primarily used at the preschool and primary levels. At the secondary level, where concentrated learning and grades are usually the primary focus, movement activities often lose importance. This article presents findings from a school-based case study aimed at investigating whether the use of learning through movement can lead to measurable performance gains in adolescents.

Anatomical network analysis of the musculoskeletal system reveals integration loss and parcellation boost during the fins-to-limbs transition

Tetrapods evolved from within the lobe-finned fishes around 370 Ma. The evolution of limbs from lobe-fins entailed a major re-organization of the skeletal and muscular anatomy of appendages in early tetrapods. Concurrently, a degree of similarity between pectoral and pelvic appendages also evolved. Here, we compared the anatomy of appendages in extant lobe-finned fishes (Latimeria and Neoceratodus) and anatomically plesiomorphic amphibians (Ambystoma, Salamandra) and amniotes (Sphenodon) to trace and reconstruct the musculoskeletal changes that took place during the fins-to-limbs transition. We quantified the anatomy of appendages using network analysis. First, we built network models—in which nodes represent bones and muscles, and links represent their anatomical connections—and then we measured network parameters related to their anatomical integration, heterogeneity, and modularity. Our results reveal an evolutionary transition toward less integrated, more modular appendages. We interpret this transition as a diversification of muscle functions in tetrapods compared to lobe-finned fishes. Limbs and lobe-fins show also a greater similarity between their pectoral and pelvic appendages than ray-fins do. These findings on extant species provide a basis for future quantitative and comprehensive reconstructions of the anatomy of limbs in early tetrapod fossils, and a way to better understand the fins-to-limbs transition

Check list of the planthoppers and leafhoppers of Germany, with notes on food plants, life cycle and distribution (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha et Cicadomorpha). – An annotated check list of the planthoppers and leafhoppers of Germany is presented, with specifications of food plants, overwintering stage, annual generation numbers and overall distribution. The list includes 620 species, comprising 145 planthoppers and 475 leafhoppers. Five taxa, which were commonly considered as separate species were treated as morphs or varieties of other species. On the other hand, in a number of cases there is evidence that a taxon hitherto regarded as a single species may comprise at least two species. Two names were declared as new synonyms. Five species probably breed only irregularly, and at least four are neozoa originating form North America, Asia or the Mediterranean region. The Journal „Cicadina“ (formerly „Beiträge zur Zikadenkunde“) is a forum for covering the fields of ecology and biology, systematics and taxonomy as well as zoogeography and faunistics, published in German or English. It focuses on Fulgoromorpha (planthoppers), Cicadomorpha (leafhoppers) as well as on Psylloidea (jumping plant lice) and other groups which are associated systematically or ecologically. So far 17 issues and 1 supplement volume were published (see below and archive). With issue 13 (2013) the journal is an open access journal hosted by the Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany)

Recent digital advancements, including social software, mobile technologies and augmented reality, offer promising opportunities to empower knowledge workers in their production environment by leveraging their knowledge processes, decision-making skills and social interaction practices. This paper proposes a conceptual framework for empowering workers in industrial production environments with digitally facilitated knowledge management processes. The framework explores four concrete facets of digital advancements that apply to a wide range of knowledge processes and production strategies in manufacturing companies. Each of these advancements are capable of supporting one specific facet of the individual knowledge management processes of workers; knowledge transfer, discovery, acquisition and sharing. The study contributes to the production research community by aligning emerging digital technologies and current trends in advanced manufacturing environments to benefit workers and improve job satisfaction, efficiency and productivity. The paper also contains suggestions about developing innovative solutions for production environments that support workers with digital technologies for flexible production
