Agronomic Performance Of Heterogeneous Cereal Populations
Results from comparative field trials of heterogeneous winter wheat and maize populations marketed in Germany under the temporary experiment 2014/150 of the European Commission are presented. Winter wheat populations were tested across 16 environments (four locations x four years) and eight maize populations were tested in six environments (three locations x two years) under organic conditions. In terms of yield and quality parameters both the wheat and maize populations indicated good agronomic performance. The wheat populations demonstrated yield levels and baking quality characteristics comparable to pure line varieties ranked in the highest German quality category (E). The maize populations yielded up to 85% of the hybrid reference varieties. An important future perspective will be the design of field trials for populations in order to test and quantify their special characteristics, e.g. adaptive capacity and suitability for low input conditions
Exposure to animals and risk of oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a multicenter case-control study

Abstract

Background

An inverse association between early contact with microbial compounds and respiratory allergies is well established. The protective effect of infant contact with animals was also shown for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We aimed to test the association between animal contact in infancy and oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (OA JIA).

Methods

Parents of children with OA JIA registered at the Hospital for Pediatric Rheumatology in Garmisch-Partenkirchen were asked to complete a questionnaire. Children who underwent strabismus surgery at six referral centers for ophthalmology served as controls. Children age 6 to 18 years born in Germany without malformations were included (238 cases; response 89% and 832 controls; response 86%). Data were analyzed using logistic regression models after adjusting for potential confounders.

Results

Neither place of living (urban vs. rural area), living on a farm, nor regular farm animal (adjusted odds ratio 0.79; 95% confidence interval 0.42-1.47) or pet contact (0.79; 0.55-1.14) during infancy were clearly related to case status. Allergic rhinitis was inversely related to OA JIA (0.57; 0.34-0.95).

Neither place of living (urban vs. rural area), living on a farm, nor regular farm animal (adjusted odds ratio 0.79; 95% confidence interval 0.42-1.47) or pet contact (0.79; 0.55-1.14) during infancy were related to case status. This finding is consistent with previous findings for diabetes mellitus type 1 but contradicts results for IBD and SLE.</p
Distinctive or Professionalised? Understanding the Postsecular in Faith-Based Responses to Trafficking, Forced Labour and Slavery in the UK
This article examines the intersection of religious faith and the ‘fight against modern slavery’ in the UK, as yet unexplored in sociological literature. Analysis of faith-based organisations’ activities in this area challenges understandings of a postsecular rapprochement between faith and secular actors – where postsecular is used by some scholars to refer to the re-emergence of faith in the public sphere, and where we understand rapprochement to mean the placing of equal value on faith-based and secular worldviews. Our research reveals that faith-based organisations in the anti-trafficking/modern slavery third sector operate on a ‘dual register’, secularising as they professionalise their public face, while retaining religious distinctiveness when engaging with co-religionists. We argue that, rather than evidence of a genuine two-way postsecular rapprochement, it seems that faith-based organisations in this sector are prioritising secular modalities, meaning the learning process is one-sided rather than complementary
The potential of parent counselling for the development of sensitive parent-child interaction : a needs assessment of parent counselling for parents of 0-3-year-old children in the province of Styria with the involvement of experts
Parents face a variety of challenges when raising their children. The province of Styria offers a low-threshold and free service for parents of children aged 0 to 3 years in the form of preventative parent counselling. This commissioned work by Department 11 (Social Affairs, Labour and Integration) examines the reasons why parents seek out parental counselling services, as well as inhibiting and facilitating factors for their use. In addition, topics were identified that are perceived as particularly challenging in parent-child interactions. The results are intended to serve as a basis for the needs-based further development of counselling services in order to increase the number of parents seeking counselling to the level seen before the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of a qualitative study, four interviews were conducted with parents who use the counselling services, as well as two interviews with long-standing counsellors. The evaluation was carried out using a qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz (2022). Historically, it has been shown that social achievements such as parental counselling do not follow a linear course, but have been influenced by crisis-related changes. The welfare theory of Ilse Arlt (1921) emphasises that it is crucial to consider both the people who receive help and those who do not. In rural areas, where social problems are often suppressed due to shame, offers of help are less likely to be taken up. However, targeted information, empathy and sensitivity in dealing with those affected can break down inhibitions and build trust. Attachment theory emphasises the importance of emotional availability in the first years of life in order to enable secure attachments. The connection between parents' own attachment experiences and their behaviour towards their own children shows the transgenerational transmission of attachment patterns. Sensitive parent-child interaction, in which the child's needs are recognised and satisfied, forms the basis for healthy development. Language and touch play a central role in this. The main reasons for seeking parent counselling are the need for information in early parenthood, support in coping with everyday life and the desire for social interaction. The results show that parent counselling has a positive influence on parent-child interaction, as parents gain more confidence in dealing with their child. In order to reach more parents, fathers and people with a non-German mother tongue in particular should be addressed to a greater extent, whereby the times of the services, dealing with language barriers and communicating the added value of the services are key criteria.Renate Meizenitsch-EderAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung von der:dem Verfasser:inMasterarbeit FH JOANNEUM 202

Transforming Spaces: A Framework for the Identification and Analysis of Adolescents’ No-Go Areas in Vienna. GI_Forum 2014 – Geospatial Innovation for Society|
The availability and usability of public space in urban fabric is important for adolescents, as they can use these places in the absence of parental control or impacts from school. Nevertheless, several studies point out, that particular public places often have a negative connotation for young people. The project Transforming Spaces identifies adolescents’ negatively associated places in Vienna, and the motives behind those perceptions, by applying a participatory multi-perspective research approach. Participatory GIS-methods are used to locate these No-Go areas and to analyse their spatial distribution. Interviews, focus groups, and artistic approaches are applied to identify and reflect the motives of negative perceptions. Furthermore the comparison of an external view on negatively associated places with an internal view should help to reduce barriers and to transform subjective spatial connotations. This paper presents the methodological framework of the project and discusses challenges as well as benefits of the selected multi-methodological approach
