Repetition of attempted suicide among immigrants in Europe
Objectives: To compare frequencies of suicide attempt repetition in immigrants and local European populations, and the timing of repetition in these groups.
Method: Data from 7 European countries, comprising 10 574 local and 3032 immigrant subjects, were taken from the World Health Organization European Multicentre Study on Suicidal Behaviour and the ensuing Monitoring Suicidal Behaviour in Europe (commonly referred to as MONSUE) project. The relation between immigrant status and repetition of suicide attempt within 12-months following first registered attempt was analyzed with binary logistic regression, controlling for sex, age, and method of attempt. Timing of repetition was controlled for sex, age, and the recommended type of aftercare.
Results: Lower odds of repeating a suicide attempt were found in Eastern European (OR 0.50; 95% CI 0.41 to 0.61, P < 0.001) and non-European immigrants (OR 0.68; 95% CI 0.51 to 0.90, P < 0.05), compared with the locals. Similar patterns were identified in the sex-specific analysis. Eastern European immigrants tended to repeat their attempt much later than locals (OR 0.58; 95% CI 0.35 to 0.93, P < 0.05). In general, 32% of all repetition occurred within 30 days. Repetition tended to decrease with age and was more likely in females using harder methods in their index attempt (OR 1.29; 95% CI 1.08 to 1.54, P < 0.01). Large variations in the general repetition frequency were identified between the collecting centres, thus influencing the results.
Conclusions: The lower repetition frequencies in non-Western immigrants, compared with locals, in Europe stands in contrast to their markedly higher tendency to attempt suicide in general, possibly pointing to situational stress factors related to their suicidal crisis that are less persistent over time. Our findings also raise the possibility that suicide attempters and repeaters constitute only partially overlapping populations
Natural and anthropogenic lead in sediments of the Rotorua lakes, New Zealand
Global atmospheric sources of lead have increased more than 100-fold over the past century as a result of deforestation, coal combustion, ore smelting and leaded petroleum. Lead compounds generally accumulate in depositional areas across the globe where, due to low solubility and relative freedom from microbial degradation, the history of their inputs is preserved. In lakes there is rapid deposition and often little bioturbation of lead, resulting in an excellent depositional history of changes in both natural and anthropogenic sources. The objective of this study was to use sediments from a regionally bounded set of lakes to provide an indication of the rates of environmental inputs of lead whilst taking into account differences of trophic state and lead exposure between lakes. Intact sediment gravity cores were collected from 13 Rotorua lakes in North Island of New Zealand between March 2006 and January 2007. Cores penetrated sediments to a depth of 16–30 cm and contained volcanic tephra from the 1886 AD Tarawera eruption. The upper depth of the Tarawera tephra enabled prescription of a date for the associated depth in the core (120 years). Each core showed a sub-surface peak in lead concentration above the Tarawera tephra which was contemporaneous with the peak use of lead alkyl as a petroleum additive in New Zealand. An 8 m piston core was taken in the largest of the lakes, Lake Rotorua, in March 2007. The lake is antipodal to the pre-industrial sources of atmospheric lead but still shows increasing lead concentrations from <2 up to 3.5 μg g−1 between the Whakatane eruption (5530 ± 60 cal. yr BP) and the Tarawera eruption. Peaks in lead concentration in Lake Rotorua are associated with volcanic tephras, but are small compared with those arising from recent anthropogenic-derived lead deposition. Our results show that diagenetic processes associated with iron, manganese and sulfate oxidation-reduction, and sulfide precipitation, act to smooth distributions of lead from anthropogenic sources in the lake sediments. The extent of this smoothing can be related to changes in sulfate availability and reduction in sulfide driven by differences in trophic status amongst the lakes. Greatest lead mobilisation occurs in mesotrophic lakes during seasonal anoxia as iron and manganese are released to the porewater, allowing upward migration of lead towards the sediment–water interface. This lead mobilisation can only occur if sulfides are not present. The sub-surface peak in lead concentrations in lake sediments ascribed to lead alkyl in petroleum persists despite the diagenetic processes acting to disperse lead within the sediments and into the overlying water
Genetic and nutrient modulation of acetyl-CoA levels in Synechocystis for <i>n</i>-butanol production
Background: There is a strong interest in using photosynthetic cyanobacteria as production hosts for biofuels and chemicals. Recent work has shown the benefit of pathway engineering, enzyme tolerance, and co-factor usage for improving yields of fermentation products. Results: An n-butanol pathway was inserted into a Synechocystis mutant deficient in polyhydroxybutyrate synthesis. We found that nitrogen starvation increased specific butanol productivity up to threefold, but cessation of cell growth limited total n-butanol titers. Metabolite profiling showed that acetyl-CoA increased twofold during nitrogen starvation. Introduction of a phosphoketolase increased acetyl-CoA levels sixfold at nitrogen replete conditions and increased butanol titers from 22 to 37 mg/L at day 8. Flux balance analysis of photoautotrophic metabolism showed that a Calvin-Benson-Bassham-Phosphoketolase pathway had higher theoretical butanol productivity than CBB-Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas and a reduced butanol ATP demand. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that phosphoketolase overexpression and modulation of nitrogen levels are two attractive routes toward increased production of acetyl-CoA derived products in cyanobacteria and could be implemented with complementary metabolic engineering strategies
Light-ion production in the interaction of 96 MeV neutrons with silicon
Double-differential cross sections for light-ion (p, d, t, He-3 and alpha)
production in silicon, induced by 96 MeV neutrons are reported. Energy spectra
are measured at eight laboratory angles, ranging from 20 degrees to 160 degrees
in steps of 20 degrees. Procedures for data taking and data reduction are
presented. Deduced energy-differential, angle-differential and production cross
sections are reported. Experimental cross sections are compared to theoretical

Self-Consistent Relativistic Calculation of Nucleon Mean Free Path
We present a fully self-consistent and relativistic calculation of the
nucleon mean free path in nuclear matter and finite nuclei. Starting from the
Bonn potential, the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results for nuclear matter are
parametrized in terms of an effective - Lagrangian suitable for
the relativistic density-dependent Hartree-Fock (RDHF) approximation. The
nucleon mean free path in nuclear matter is derived from this effective
Lagrangian taking diagrams up to fourth-order into account. For the nucleon
mean free path in finite nuclei, we make use of the density determined by the
RDHF calculation in the local density approximation. Our microscopic results
are in good agreement with the empirical data and predictions by Dirac

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: Enfranchisement Among Native American Voters and Nick v. Bethel
This Comment documents the limited impact of Nick v. Bethel and proposes legislative and electoral reforms to increase enfranchisement among Alaska Natives. The Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965 made significant progress in protecting minority voting rights. In 2007, a federal district court interpreted the “historically unwritten” exemption in Section 203 of the VRA for the first time in Nick. While the court found Yup’ik to be historically unwritten, the court also reasoned that written translations of election materials should be prepared in order to ensure that oral translations were effective in accommodating voters. The state responded through various actions to ensure the effectiveness of the language assistance program in the Bethel Census Area. Nick set up a roadmap for future successful litigation to bring the state into compliance with the VRA. However, since the U.S. Supreme Court held parts of the VRA unconstitutional in Shelby County v. Holder , the litigation strategy outlined in Nick has dissolved. In turn, the call for new federal and state policies addressing the geographic and language obstacles for voters in Alaska has never been clearer
Characterisation of a travelling-wave parametric amplifier for improved qubit measurements
In order to build a large-scale quantum computer, one of the requirements is high-fidelity multiplexed qubit readout, which in turn relies on the use of ultralow-noise amplifiers. While Josephson Parametric Amplifiers (JPAs), using a cavity with few Josephson junctions, have shown promising results for single qubit readout, they have limitations such as low saturation power and a gain-bandwidth product restriction. This makes them less suited for frequency multiplexed qubit readout. A current-pumped Josephson Travelling-Wave Parametric Amplifier (JTWPA), using 4-wave mixing in a lumped-element transmission line, features both high saturation power as well as no restriction on large bandwidth and high gain. This is possible due to multiple junctions and the lack of a cavity. However, also this current pumped JTWPA has an inherent problem, namely phase mismatch between the pump and the signal. This prevents exponential gain. In this thesis, a current pumped JTWPA using the resonant phase matching (RPM) technique to reduce the phase mismatch problem is studied and characterised. The JTWPA shows high gain, high saturation power and a large signal-to-noise ratio improvement. The JTWPA is also used for qubit readout, for which it clearly improves the readout fidelity
Recommended care for young people (15-19 years) after suicide attempts in certain European countries
Abstract Data on recommended care for young people aged 15±19 years after attempted suicide from nine European research centres dur- ing the period 1989±1992 were ana- lysed in terms of gender, history of previous suicide attempt and meth- ods used. Altogether 438 suicide attempts made by 353 boys and 1,102 suicide attempts made by 941 girls were included. Analyses of the total data from all centres showed that young people with a history of previous suicide attempt and those using violent methods had signi®- cantly higher chance of being rec- ommended aftercare than ®rst-time attempters or those choosing self- poisoning. There were no signi®cant di erences of being recommended care between genders. Logistic re- gression analyses of the material were performed and the results were similar. Both having previous at- tempted suicide (odds ratio 2.0, 95% CI 1.53±2.61) and using ``hard'' methods (odds ratio 1.71, 95% CI 1.49±1.96) were signi®cantly associ- ated with increased possibility of being recommended aftercare. When individual centres were analysed, large disparities of recommended care after suicide attempts were found and there were no uniform criteria of recommending care for young suicide attempters in Europe.
