The Average Daily Energy Expenditure of Elderly Males and Females
The aim of this study was to report on the average daily energy expenditure by elderly males and females in their normal day-to-day activities. The study was based on an analysis of data collected over six months from daily diary recording of activities. The subjects, 82 males and 93 females, were non-institutionalized volunteers with a mean age of 68 years. A multivariate analysis of variance indicated that there were no differences between males and females in total mean daily energy expended and energy expended on Sporting activities. Females expended over twice as much energy as males on Household Chores (F = 36.3, p < 0.001). Males expended over three times as much energy as females on Gardening (F = 56.7, p < 0.001) and over seven times as much on Maintenance (F = 53.6, p < 0.001). There were also differences between males and females on energy expended while Walking (F = 6.1, p < 0.02) and on Miscellaneous activities (F = 6.3, p < 0.05). It is concluded that sex stereotypical roles for activities required at younger ages are continued into old age. The implications of these findings for prescribing regular exercise in the elderly are discussed, indicating specific activities that might prove to be beneficial. Data Ownership and Privacy in Dairy Farming: Insights from U.S. and Global Perspectives
In the evolving landscape of dairy farming, data ownership and privacy have become critical issues. This commentary paper delves into the complexities and implications of data management in the dairy industry, informed by insights from a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders. While the authors bring a U.S. perspective, the challenges discussed are globally relevant, given the dominant role of multinational corporations in shaping data practices across regions. The discussions, conducted through structured meetings and iterative online exchanges, emphasized the pressing legal and ethical concerns, the role of technology, and the necessity of developing comprehensive guidelines to safeguard data integrity and benefit all stakeholders. Key points include the global nature of data protection regulations, the potential of blockchain and IoT devices to enhance transparency, and the importance of equitable value distribution. By fostering an environment of transparency and fairness, the dairy industry can harness the power of data to drive innovation and sustainability while protecting the rights of those who generate it. This paper provides a pathway to address these challenges by raising awareness and proposing general actions for the industry’s future
Regioselective Direct C−H Bond (Hetero)arylation of Thiazoles Enabled by a Novel Iminopyridine-Based α‐Diimine Nickel(II) Complex Evaluated by DFT Studies.
Direct C−H bond arylation is a highly effective method for synthesizing arylated heteroaromatics. This method reduces synthetic steps and minimizes the formation of impurities. We report an air and moisture-stable iminopyridine-based α-diimine nickel (II) complex for direct C5-H bond arylation of thiazole derivatives. Under low catalyst loading and performing the reactions at lower temperatures (80 °C) under aerobic conditions, we produced mono- and diarylated thiazole units. Competition experiments and density functional theory calculations (DFT) revealed that the mechanism of C−H activation in 4-methylthiazole involves electrophilic aromatic substitution
Alcohol-involved sexual assault in the US military: a scoping review
Background: Sexual assault and alcohol use are significant public health concerns, including for the United States (US) military. Although alcohol is a risk factor for military sexual assault (MSA), research on the extent of alcohol-involvement in MSAs has not been synthesised. Objective: Accordingly, this scoping review is a preliminary step in evaluating the existing literature on alcohol-involved MSAs among US service members and veterans, with the goals of quantifying the prevalence of alcohol-involved MSA, examining differences in victim versus perpetrator alcohol consumption, and identifying additional knowledge gaps. Method: In accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for Scoping Reviews, articles in this review were written in English, published in 1996 or later, reported statistics regarding alcohol-involved MSA, and included samples of US service members or veterans who experienced MSA during military service. Results: A total of 34 of 2436 articles identified met inclusion criteria. Studies often measured alcohol and drug use together. Rates of reported MSAs that involved the use of alcohol or alcohol/drugs ranged from 14% to 66.1% (M = 36.94%; Mdn = 37%) among servicemen and from 0% to 83% (M = 40.27%; Mdn = 41%) among servicewomen. Alcohol use was frequently reported in MSAs, and there is a dearth of information on critical event-level characteristics of alcohol-involved MSA. Additionally, studies used different definitions and measures of MSA and alcohol use, complicating comparisons across studies. Conclusion: The lack of event-level data, and inconsistencies in definitions, measures, and sexual assault timeframes across articles demonstrates that future research and data collection efforts require more event-level detail and consistent methodology to better understand the intersection of alcohol and MSA, which will ultimately inform MSA prevention and intervention efforts. Furthermore, event-level data is needed including amount and timeframe of alcohol consumption, relationship between victim and perpetrator, location of alcohol consumption and military sexual assault, and whether the assault was opportunistic or facilitated, to inform military sexual assault prevention and intervention efforts in the military.
