Fast sampling in a linear-Gaussian inverse problem

We solve the inverse problem of deblurring a pixelized image of Jupiter using regularized deconvolution and by sample-based Bayesian inference. By efficiently sampling the marginal posterior distribution for hyperparameters, then the full conditional for the deblurred image, we find that we can evaluate the posterior mean faster than regularized inversion, when selection of the regularizing parameter is considered. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of sampling and inference that takes less compute time than regularized inversion in an inverse problems. Comparison to random-walk Metropolis-Hastings and block Gibbs MCMC shows that marginal then conditional sampling also outperforms these more common sampling algorithms, having better scaling with problem size. When problem-specific computations are feasible the asymptotic cost of an independent sample is one linear solve, implying that sample-based Bayesian inference may be performed directly over function spaces, when that limit exists

Cuando Israel lanzó la ofensiva militar contra Gaza el 27 de diciembre de 2008, no lo hizo en un momento cualquiera. No obstante, como ocurrió en la guerra de Líbano de 2006, los logros estratégicos de Israel en la “Operación Plomo Fundido” se diluyen día tras día. Hamás ha sufrido un duro revés como consecuencia de los 23 días de ofensiva militar en Gaza, pero es la población civil quien se ha llevado la peor parte. Mientras que Israel ha perdido 10 soldados y cuatro civiles, las bajas palestinas ascienden a 1.300 personas, la gran mayoría de las cuales eran no combatientes, incluidos aproximadamente 300 niños. No obstante, como ocurrió en la guerra de Líbano de 2006, los logros estratégicos de Israel en la “Operación Plomo Fundido” se diluyen día tras día. Si Israel hubiera lanzado una dura campaña de tres o cuatro días de duración contra Hamás y sus infraestructuras, el grupo islamista habría despertado menos simpatías en el mundo árabe y es posible que se hubiera podido reinstaurar un alto el fuego bajo las condiciones impuestas por Israel. Space and biotechnology: An industry profile

The results of a study conducted by the Center for Space and Advanced Technology (CSAT) for NASA-JSC are presented. The objectives were to determine the interests and attitudes of the U.S. biotechnology industry toward space biotechnology and to prepare a concise review of the current activities of the biotechnology industry. In order to accomplish these objectives, two primary actions were taken. First, a questionnaire was designed, reviewed, and distributed to U.S. biotechnology companies. Second, reviews of the various biotechnology fields were prepared in several aspects of the industry. For each review, leading figures in the field were asked to prepare a brief review pointing out key trends and current industry technical problems. The result is a readable narrative of the biotechnology industry which will provide space scientists and engineers valuable clues as to where the space environment can be explored to advance the U.S. biotechnology industry

La estrategia estadounidense en Oriente Medio: luchando por evitar el fracaso

Al analizar la historia estadounidense resulta muy difícil encontrar decisiones presidenciales tan mal fundadas y contraproducentes como la de invadir y ocupar Irak en 2003. Ahora la cuestión es ver si EEUU agravará aún más su tremendo error estratégico decidiendo atacar a Irán. Se avecinan desafíos para EEUU con respecto a Irán, así como en Líbano y Palestina. La suerte del declarado pero vacío empeño de la Administración Bush de promover la reforma política y la democracia en Oriente Medio también pende de un hilo. Regularity for Maxwell eigenproblems in photonic crystal fibre modelling

International audienceThe convergence behaviour and the design of numerical methods for modelling the flow of light in photonic crystal fibres depend critically on an understanding of the regularity of solutions to time-harmonic Maxwell equations in a three-dimensional, periodic, translationally invariant, heterogeneous medium. In this paper we determine the strength of the dominant singularities that occur at the interface between materials. By modifying earlier regularity theory for polygonal interfaces we find that on each subdomain, where the material in the fibre is constant, the regularity of in-plane components of the magnetic field are $H^{2-\eta}$ for all $\eta > 0$. This estimate is sharp in the sense that these components do not belong to $H^2$, in general. However, global regularity is restricted by the presence of an interface between these subdomains and the interface conditions imply only $H^{3/2-\eta}$ regularity across the interface. The results are useful to anyone applying a numerical method such as a finite element method or a planewave expansion method to model photonic crystal fibres or similar materials
