What happens in-between mobilizations? Building and organizing contentious politics at the University of Tehran (2007-2017)

    Get PDF
This article investigates contentious politics in authoritarian contexts by looking at the case study of student activism in the Islamic Republic of Iran. More specifically, the article asks ‘how does the Iranian student movement “do” contentious politics?’, and argues that a broader approach is needed when examining social movements and mobilizations in authoritarian countries, than one focused on visible mobilizations. In particular, interpersonal relationships, local histories of activism, and what happens ‘in-between’ episodes of contention should be valued as material carrying analytical gravity. Adopting this approach, the article looks at the continuities and ruptures that have characterized on campus political contention in Iran in the 2000s and 2010s, bringing to the fore the overlooked history of how the student movements have re-organized after major waves of state repression

Results from the commissioning of the ALICE Inner Tracking System with cosmics

The Inner Tracking System (ITS) is the detector of the ALICE central barrel located closest to the beam axis and it is therefore a key detector for tracking and vertexing performance. Here, the main results from the ITS commissioning with atmospheric muons in 2008 are presented, focusing in particular on the detector operation and calibration and on the methods developed for the alignment of the ITS detectors using reconstructed tracks.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure with 3 panels (=3 separate eps files) To appear in the conference proceedings for Quark Matter 2009, March 30 - April 4, Knoxville, Tennesse

Tensions in the practice of Marian Devotion between Clergy, Laity, and the Vatican: The maintenance of Catholic Social Structure in Gozo, Malta

    Get PDF
In Gozo, Malta, tensions exist within the ritual system of Catholic Marian Devotion, observed through a disconnect between how laity practice Marian Devotion rituals and how the Vatican defines the practice of Marian Devotion. The local clergy, as intermediaries between the laity and the Vatican, negotiate between these groups to ensure the system's stability. In Gozo, this negotiation plays out through festa celebrations, devotional art, the dedication of ex-votos, and gendered distinctions. The clergy in Gozo mediate between the laity and the Vatican by tacitly accepting the laity's unsanctioned devotion practices while not actively participating, maintaining the balance of the social system of Catholic Marian Devotion in which they all operate. No embargoAcademic Major: Anthropological Science

Elasto-capillary meniscus: Pulling out a soft strip sticking to a liquid surface

A liquid surface touching a solid usually deforms in a near-wall meniscus region. In this work, we replace part of the free surface with a soft polymer and examine the shape of this elasto-capillary meniscus, result of the interplay between elasticity, capillarity and hydrostatic pressure. We focus particularly on the extraction threshold for the soft object. Indeed, we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically the existence of a limit height of liquid tenable before breakdown of the compound, and extraction of the object. Such an extraction force is known since Laplace and Gay-Lussac, but only in the context of rigid floating objects. We revisit this classical problem by adding the elastic ingredient and predict the extraction force in terms of the strip elastic properties. It is finally shown that the critical force can be increased with elasticity, as is commonplace in adhesion phenomenaComment: 11 pages, 10 figure

Coprotagonista della rivoluzione contro lo Shah del 1979, la sinistra iraniana fu poi spazzata via anche per la mancata comprensione dei fenomeni e delle forze religiose e per gli errori di settarismo che ne segnarono la storia
