    Lessons from the Use of Ranked Choice Voting in American Presidential Primaries

    Grounded in experience in 2020, both major political parties have reasons to expand use of ranked choice voting (RCV) in their 2024 presidential primaries. RCV may offer a ‘win-win’ solution benefiting both the parties and their voters. RCV would build on both the pre-1968 American tradition of parties determining a coalitional presidential nominee through multiple ballots at party conventions and the modern practice of allowing voters to effectively choose their nominees in primaries. Increasingly used by parties around the world in picking their leaders, RCV may allow voters to crowd-source a coalitional nominee. Most published research about RCV focuses on state and local elections. In contrast, this article analyzes the impact on voters, candidates, and parties from five state Democratic parties using RCV in party-run presidential nomination contests in 2020. First, it uses polls and results to examine how more widespread use of RCV might have affected the trajectory of contests for the 2016 Republican nomination. Second, it contrasts how more than three million voters in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries backed withdrawn candidates with the low rate of such wasted votes for withdrawn candidates in the states with RCV ballots. Finally, it concludes with an examination of how RCV might best interact with the parties’ current rules and potential changes to those rules

    Severe early onset preeclampsia: short and long term clinical, psychosocial and biochemical aspects

    Preeclampsia is a pregnancy specific disorder commonly defined as de novo hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks gestational age. It occurs in approximately 3-5% of pregnancies and it is still a major cause of both foetal and maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide1. As extensive research has not yet elucidated the aetiology of preeclampsia, there are no rational preventive or therapeutic interventions available. The only rational treatment is delivery, which benefits the mother but is not in the interest of the foetus, if remote from term. Early onset preeclampsia (<32 weeks’ gestational age) occurs in less than 1% of pregnancies. It is, however often associated with maternal morbidity as the risk of progression to severe maternal disease is inversely related with gestational age at onset2. Resulting prematurity is therefore the main cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity in patients with severe preeclampsia3. Although the discussion is ongoing, perinatal survival is suggested to be increased in patients with preterm preeclampsia by expectant, non-interventional management. This temporising treatment option to lengthen pregnancy includes the use of antihypertensive medication to control hypertension, magnesium sulphate to prevent eclampsia and corticosteroids to enhance foetal lung maturity4. With optimal maternal haemodynamic status and reassuring foetal condition this results on average in an extension of 2 weeks. Prolongation of these pregnancies is a great challenge for clinicians to balance between potential maternal risks on one the eve hand and possible foetal benefits on the other. Clinical controversies regarding prolongation of preterm preeclamptic pregnancies still exist – also taking into account that preeclampsia is the leading cause of maternal mortality in the Netherlands5 - a debate which is even more pronounced in very preterm pregnancies with questionable foetal viability6-9. Do maternal risks of prolongation of these very early pregnancies outweigh the chances of neonatal survival? Counselling of women with very early onset preeclampsia not only comprises of knowledge of the outcome of those particular pregnancies, but also knowledge of outcomes of future pregnancies of these women is of major clinical importance.     Ensuring the safety and sustainability of advanced materials (AdMas) is critical for fostering innovation while protecting human health and the environment. As industries integrate AdMas into commercial products to innovate in the next stage of the value chains, there is an urgent need for robust methodologies to detect, characterize, and assess their potential risks throughout their life cycle. The MACRAMÉ Project addresses this challenge by advancing standardized testing and regulatory frameworks, supporting the EU's vision for a toxic-free environment. Through cutting-edge research and international collaboration, MACRAMÉ lays the groundwork for reliable hazard assessment, regulatory compliance, and the responsible development of next-generation materials. The MACRAMÉ Project aims to enhance the detection, characterization, and quantification of Advanced Materials (AdMas) throughout their life cycle, assessing potential human and environmental health impacts during exposure. By developing, demonstrating, and standardizing advanced methodologies, MACRAMÉ ensures their broad applicability across market-relevant AdMas-containing products. Fully aligned with EU strategies such as the Chemical Strategy for Sustainability and the European Green Deal, the project extends nanosafety approaches to the broader AdMas category, focusing on inhalable carbon-based materials - graphene-related materials, carbon nanofibers, and poly lactic-co-glycolic acid nanoparticles. Building on over 15 years of research, MACRAMÉ integrates knowledge from major European and international initiatives to establish harmonized test guidelines, guidance documents, and standards. Through five industrial Use-Cases, the project applies innovative sample preparation, detection, and toxicity assessment techniques to develop a tiered approach for AdMa safety testing. Centralized in the MACRAMÉ Information Hub, all data will support regulatory frameworks and future research. The project's outcomes - harmonization and pre-standardization proposals - will contribute to a unified European assessment framework, reinforcing the continent's leadership in safe and sustainable materials innovation.</p

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    Measurement of the triple-differential cross section for photon + jets production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt (s) = 7 TeV

    A measurement of the triple-differential cross section, , in photon + jets final states using a data sample from proton-proton collisions at = 7 TeV is presented. This sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.14 fb(-1) collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. Photons and jets are reconstructed within a pseudorapidity range of |eta| 30 GeV, respectively. The measurements are compared to theoretical predictions from the sherpa leading-order QCD Monte Carlo event generator and the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation from jetphox.     Search for anomalous production of events with three or more leptons in pp collisions at √s = 8TeV

The data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5fb-1 of proton-proton collisions with center-of-mass energy s=8TeV, was collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC during 2012. The data are divided into exclusive categories based on the number of leptons and their flavor, the presence or absence of an opposite-sign, same-flavor lepton pair (OSSF), the invariant mass of the OSSF pair, the presence or absence of a tagged bottom-quark jet, the number of identified hadronically decaying τ leptons, and the magnitude of the missing transverse energy and of the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta. The numbers of observed events are found to be consistent with the expected numbers from standard model processes, and limits are placed on new-physics scenarios that yield multilepton final states. In particular, scenarios that predict Higgs boson production in the context of supersymmetric decay chains are examined. We also place a 95% confidence level upper limit of 1.3% on the branching fraction for the decay of a top quark to a charm quark and a Higgs boson (t→cH), which translates to a bound on the left- and right-handed top-charm flavor-violating Higgs Yukawa couplings, λtcH and λctH, respectively, of |λtcH|2+|λctH|2<0.21
