Apodized Lyot Coronagraph for VLT-SPHERE: Laboratory tests and performances of a first prototype in the visible
We present some of the High Dynamic Range Imaging activities developed around
the coronagraphic test-bench of the Laboratoire A. H. Fizeau (Nice). They
concern research and development of an Apodized Lyot Coronagraph (ALC) for the
VLT-SPHERE instrument and experimental results from our testbed working in the
visible domain. We determined by numerical simulations the specifications of
the apodizing filter and searched the best technological process to manufacture
it. We present the results of the experimental tests on the first apodizer
prototype in the visible and the resulting ALC nulling performances. The tests
concern particularly the apodizer characterization (average transmission radial
profile, global reflectivity and transmittivity in the visible), ALC nulling
performances compared with expectations, sensitivity of the ALC performances to
misalignments of its components
Improved Delta Sigma Modulators for High Speed Applications
International audienceThis article presents a new Low-Pass Delta Sigma Modulators (LPDS) architecture to improve the noise shaping for high frequency applications. The errors resulting from approximations made by calculating with 1/2N coefficients are compensated. Simulations with extracted parasitics of the layout are made and give a SNDR of 111 dB, 3.8 mW power consumption at 4 GHz in 65 nm CMOS technology for UMTS standard
Locomotion-Related Oscillatory Body Movements at 6–12 Hz Modulate the Hippocampal Theta Rhythm
The hippocampal theta rhythm is required for accurate navigation and spatial memory but its relation to the dynamics of locomotion is poorly understood. We used miniature accelerometers to quantify with high temporal and spatial resolution the oscillatory movements associated with running in rats. Simultaneously, we recorded local field potentials in the CA1 area of the hippocampus. We report that when rats run their heads display prominent vertical oscillations with frequencies in the same range as the hippocampal theta rhythm (i.e., 6–12 Hz). In our behavioral set-up, rats run mainly with speeds between 50 and 100 cm/s. In this range of speeds, both the amplitude and frequency of the “theta” head oscillations were increasing functions of running speed, demonstrating that the head oscillations are part of the locomotion dynamics. We found evidence that these rhythmical locomotor dynamics interact with the neuronal activity in the hippocampus. The amplitude of the hippocampal theta rhythm depended on the relative phase shift with the head oscillations, being maximal when the two signals were in phase. Despite similarity in frequency, the head movements and LFP oscillations only displayed weak phase and frequency locking. Our results are consistent with that neurons in the CA1 region receive inputs that are phase locked to the head acceleration signal and that these inputs are integrated with the ongoing theta rhythm

Further Evidence for Chemical Fractionation from Ultraviolet Observations of Carbon Monoxide
Ultraviolet absorption from interstellar 12CO and 13CO was detected toward
rho Oph A and chi Oph. The measurements were obtained at medium resolution with
the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope. Column
density ratios, N(12CO)/N(13CO), of 125 \pm 23 and 117 \pm 35 were derived for
the sight lines toward rho Oph A and chi Oph, respectively. A value of 1100 \pm
600 for the ratio N(12C16O)/N(12C18O) toward rho Oph A was also obtained.
Absorption from vibrationally excited H_2 (v" = 3) was clearly seen toward this
star as well.
The ratios are larger than the isotopic ratios for carbon and oxygen
appropriate for ambient interstellar material. Since for both carbon and oxygen
the more abundant isotopomer is enhanced, selective isotopic photodissociation
plays the key role in the fractionation process for these directions. The
enhancement arises because the more abundant isotopomer has lines that are more
optically thick, resulting in more self shielding from dissociating radiation.
A simple argument involving the amount of self shielding [from N(12CO)] and the
strength of the ultraviolet radiation field premeating the gas (from the amount
of vibrationally excited H_2) shows that selective isotopic photodissociation
controls the fractionation seen in these two sight lines, as well as the sight

Measurements of the branching fractions of B+→ppK+ decays
The branching fractions of the decay B+ → pp̄K+ for different intermediate states are measured using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1, collected by the LHCb experiment. The total branching fraction, its charmless component Mpp̄ < 2.85 GeV/c2 and the branching fractions via the resonant cc̄ states η c(1S) and ψ(2S) relative to the decay via a J/ψ intermediate state are [Equation not available: see fulltext.] Upper limits on the B + branching fractions into the η c(2S) meson and into the charmonium-like states X(3872) and X(3915) are also obtained
Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of decays
The differential branching fraction of the rare decay is measured as a function of , the
square of the dimuon invariant mass. The analysis is performed using
proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0
\mbox{ fb}^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment. Evidence of signal is
observed in the region below the square of the mass. Integrating
over 15 < q^{2} < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4 the branching fraction is measured as
d\mathcal{B}(\Lambda^{0}_{b} \rightarrow \Lambda \mu^+\mu^-)/dq^2 = (1.18 ^{+
0.09} _{-0.08} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-7} ( \mbox{GeV}^{2}/c^{4})^{-1},
where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the
normalisation mode, , respectively.
In the intervals where the signal is observed, angular distributions are
studied and the forward-backward asymmetries in the dimuon ()
and hadron () systems are measured for the first time. In the
range 15 < q^2 < 20 \mbox{ GeV}^2/c^4 they are found to be A^{l}_{\rm FB} =
-0.05 \pm 0.09 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)} and A^{h}_{\rm FB} =
-0.29 \pm 0.07 \mbox{ (stat)} \pm 0.03 \mbox{ (syst)}.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, Erratum adde
Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the baryon
A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 3 fb collected by LHCb at and 8 TeV, is used
to reconstruct , decays. Using the , decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute
lifetime of the baryon are measured to be \begin{align*}
\frac{\tau_{\Omega_b^-}}{\tau_{\Xi_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\
\tau_{\Omega_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the
uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for
only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference,
, and the corresponding mass, which
yields \begin{align*} m_{\Omega_b^-}-m_{\Xi_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm
MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{\Omega_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2.

Study of and decays and determination of the CKM angle
We report a study of the suppressed and favored
decays, where the neutral meson is detected
through its decays to the and CP-even and
final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton
collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb. We observe the first significant
signals in the CP-even final states of the meson for both the suppressed
and favored modes, as well as
in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed final state of the decay. Evidence for the ADS suppressed decay , with , is also presented. From the observed
yields in the , and their
charge conjugate decay modes, we measure the value of the weak phase to be
. This is one of the most precise

Model-independent evidence for contributions to decays
The data sample of decays acquired with the
LHCb detector from 7 and 8~TeV collisions, corresponding to an integrated
luminosity of 3 fb, is inspected for the presence of or
contributions with minimal assumptions about
contributions. It is demonstrated at more than 9 standard deviations that
decays cannot be described with
contributions alone, and that contributions play a dominant role in
this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously
obtained model-dependent evidence for charmonium-pentaquark
