Estimating stratospheric temperature trends using satellite microwave radiances
The objective was to evaluate and intercompare stratospheric temperatures using Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) data as a basis data set. The MSU, aboard the NOAA polar orbiter satellite series, provides twice daily global coverage over a layer (50-150 mb) at approximately a (170km)(exp 2) resolution. Conventional data sets will be compared to the satellite data in the lower stratosphere in order to assess their quality for trend computations
Consumers don't play dice, influence of social networks and advertisements
Empirical data of supermarket sales show stylised facts that are similar to
stock markets, with a broad (truncated) Levy distribution of weekly sales
differences in the baseline sales [R.D. Groot, Physica A 353 (2005) 501]. To
investigate the cause of this, the influence of social interactions and
advertisements are studied in an agent-based model of consumers in a social
network. The influence of network topology was varied by using a small-world
network, a random network and a Barabasi-Albert network. The degree to which
consumers value the opinion of their peers was also varied. On a small-world
and random network we find a phase-transition between an open market and a
locked-in market that is similar to condensation in liquids. At the critical
point, fluctuations become large and buying behaviour is strongly correlated.
However, on the small world network the noise distribution at the critical
point is Gaussian, and critical slowing down occurs which is not observed in
supermarket sales. On a scale-free network, the model shows a transition
between a gas-like phase and a glassy state, but at the transition point the
noise amplitude is much larger than what is seen in supermarket sales. To
explore the role of advertisements, a model is studied where imprints are
placed on the minds of consumers that ripen when a decision for a product is
made. The correct distribution of weekly sales returns follows naturally from
this model, as well as the noise amplitude, the correlation time and
cross-correlation of sales fluctuations. For particular parameter values,
simulated sales correlation shows power law decay in time. The model predicts
that social interaction helps to prevent aversion, and that products are viewed
more positively when their consumption rate is higher.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physica
Gravitomagnetism in the Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT spacetime
We study the motion of test particles and electromagnetic waves in the
Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT spacetime in order to elucidate some of the effects
associated with the gravitomagnetic monopole moment of the source. In
particular, we determine in the linear approximation the contribution of this
monopole to the gravitational time delay and the rotation of the plane of the
polarization of electromagnetic waves. Moreover, we consider "spherical" orbits
of uncharged test particles in the Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime and discuss the
modification of the Wilkins orbits due to the presence of the gravitomagnetic

Using novel methodologies to examine the impact of artificial light at night on the cortisol stress response in dispersing Atlantic salmon (Salmo salarL.) fry
Artificial light at night (ALAN) is gaining recognition as having an important anthropogenic impact on the environment, yet the behavioural and physiological impacts of this stressor are largely unknown. This dearth of information is particularly true for freshwater ecosystems, which are already heavily impacted by anthropogenic pressures. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) is a species of conservation and economic importance whose ecology and behaviour is well studied, making it an ideal model species. Recent investigations have demonstrated that salmon show disrupted behaviour in response to artificial light; however, it is not yet clear which physiological processes are behind the observed behavioural modifications. Here, two novel non-invasive sampling methods were used to examine the cortisol stress response of dispersing salmon fry under different artificial lighting intensities. Fish egg and embryos were reared under differing ALAN intensities and individual measures of stress were subsequently taken from dispersing fry using static sampling, whereas population-level measures were achieved using deployed passive samplers. Dispersing fry exposed to experimental confinement showed elevated cortisol levels, indicating the capacity to mount a stress response at this early stage in ontogenesis. However, only one of the two methods for sampling cortisol used in this study indicated that ALAN may act as a stressor to dispersing salmon fry. As such, a cortisol-mediated response to light was not strongly supported. Furthermore, the efficacy of the two non-invasive methodologies used in this study is, subject to further validation, indicative of them proving useful in future ecological studies
Taub--NUT Dyons in Heterotic String Theory
Starting with the Taub--NUT solution to Einstein's equations, together with a
constant dilaton, a dyonic Taub--NUT solution of low energy heterotic string
theory with non--trivial dilaton, axion and gauge fields is constructed
by employing transformations. The electromagnetic dual of this
solution is constructed, using SL(2,\rline) transformations. By an
appropriate change to scaled variables, the extremal limit of the dual solution
is shown to correspond to the low energy limit of an exact conformal field

A Strategy for Finding Near Earth Objects with the SDSS Telescope
We present a detailed observational strategy for finding Near Earth Objects
(NEOs) with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) telescope. We investigate
strategies in normal, unbinned mode as well as binning the CCDs 2x2 or 3x3,
which affects the sky coverage rate and the limiting apparent magnitude. We
present results from 1 month, 3 year and 10 year simulations of such surveys.
For each cadence and binning mode, we evaluate the possibility of achieving the
Spaceguard goal of detecting 90% of 1 km NEOs (absolute magnitude H <= 18 for
an albedo of 0.1). We find that an unbinned survey is most effective at
detecting H <= 20 NEOs in our sample. However, a 3x3 binned survey reaches the
Spaceguard Goal after only seven years of operation. As the proposed large
survey telescopes (PanStarss; LSST) are at least 5-10 years from operation, an
SDSS NEO survey could make a significant contribution to the detection and

CANDELS Observations Of The Structural Properties Of Cluster Galaxies At Z=1.62
We discuss the structural and morphological properties of galaxies in a z = 1.62 proto-cluster using near-IR imaging data from Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 data of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The cluster galaxies exhibit a clear color-morphology relation: galaxies with colors of quiescent stellar populations generally have morphologies consistent with spheroids, and galaxies with colors consistent with ongoing star formation have disk-like and irregular morphologies. The size distribution of the quiescent cluster galaxies shows a deficit of compact (less than or similar to 1 kpc), massive galaxies compared to CANDELS field galaxies at z = 1.6. As a result, the cluster quiescent galaxies have larger average effective sizes compared to field galaxies at fixed mass at greater than 90% significance. Combined with data from the literature, the size evolution of quiescent cluster galaxies is relatively slow from z similar or equal to 1.6 to the present, growing as (1 + z)(-0.6 +/- 0.1). If this result is generalizable, then it implies that physical processes associated with the denser cluster region seem to have caused accelerated size growth in quiescent galaxies prior to z = 1.6 and slower subsequent growth at z < 1.6 compared to galaxies in the lower density field. The quiescent cluster galaxies at z = 1.6 have higher ellipticities compared to lower redshift samples at fixed mass, and their surface-brightness profiles suggest that they contain extended stellar disks.
