    Estudo de um sistema de distribuição e análise de mercado e fluxos de rede: o caso SIAM

No estudo da distribuição de produtos, dentro de um mercado cada vez mais competitivo, torna-se vital buscar o apoio da técnica para eliminar-se o empirismo e os desperdícios decorrentes de uma operação fortemente influenciada por paradigmas e por sentimentos subjetivos. O segmento da indústria que faz a distribuição de combustíveis no Brasil desenvolveu junto à universidade um sistema de apoio à decisão utilizando técnicas de fluxos em rede e técnicas de economia de mercados. O objetivo deste trabalho é a análise da funcionalidade deste sistema e a avaliação dos resultados gerados através de diversas simulações. Na revisão bibliográfica são apresentados os principais modelos de distribuição e os principais modelos econômicos. Estes modelos são comentados e analisados comparando-se resultados obtidos a partir de exemplos numéricos. Foi feita uma descrição simplificada do mencionado sistema, chamado SIAM, citando suas principais funções e particularidades, as entradas de informações e saída de resultados. Utilizando-se o sistema, foram processados diversos casos e analisados os resultados avaliando-se sua eficácia não só como ferramenta de apoio à decisão, mas também como ferramenta de gestão operacional. Após as conclusões sobre o sistema e algumas recomendações, foi acrescentado um apêndice com algumas sugestões de melhorias para as telas do SIAM

    We propose a theory of skill mobility across cities. It predicts the well documented city size-wage premium: the wage distribution in large cities first-order stochastically dominates that in small cities. Yet, because this premium is reflected in higher house prices, this does not necessarily imply that this stochastic dominance relation also exists in the distribution of skills. Instead, we find there is second-order stochastic dominance in the skill distribution. The demand for skills is non-monotonic as our model predicts a “Sinatra” as well as an “Eminem” effect: both the very high and the very low skilled disproportionately sort into the biggest cities, while those with medium skill levels sort into small cities. The pattern of spatial sorting is explained by a technology with a varying elasticity of substitution that is decreasing in skill density.     Unemployment Risk and Wage Differentials

    Workers in less secure jobs are often paid less than identical-looking workers in more secure jobs. We show that this lack of compensating differentials for unemployment risk can arise in equilibrium when all workers are identical, and firms differ, but do so only in offered job security (the probability that the worker is not sent into unemployment). In a setting where workers search on and off the job, wages paid increase with job security for at least all firms in the risky tail of the distribution of firm-level unemployment risk. As a result, unemployment spells become persistent for low-wage and unemployed workers, a seeming pattern of ‘unemployment scarring’, that is created entirely by firm heterogeneity alone. Higher in the wage distribution, workers can take wage cuts to move to more stable employment

    Oropouche virus (OROV) is an important cause of arboviral illness in Latin American countries, more specifically in the Amazon region of Brazil, Venezuela and Peru, as well as in other countries such as Panama. In the past decades, the clinical, epidemiological, pathological, and molecular aspects of OROV have been published and provide the basis for a better understanding of this important human pathogen. Here, we describe the milestones in a comprehensive review of OROV epidemiology, pathogenesis, and molecular biology, including a description of the first isolation of the virus, the outbreaks during the past six decades, clinical aspects of OROV infection, diagnostic methods, genome and genetic traits, evolution, and viral dispersal

    Services offshoring and its strategic effects on value chains

    This article's main objective is to examine some known management theories under the offshoring point of view. It detaches some factors in existing theories and how they can be at risk in an increasing offshoring of services processes. In the absence of more systematic studies about the effects of offshoring over value chain and core competencies imprecise borders and definitions, we try to interpret them in a holistic manner and stimulate discussions in a new area of study rather than to provide definitive general conclusions. The methodological aspects mainly concerning the offshoring bibliography are very impressive, especially since 2000. There seems to be a new trend appearing, like a wedge between strategy and international business theories, or that at least complements these theories. The analysis presented in this paper is offered as an aid to systematic investigation involving value chains, core competencies, innovations and the accelerated process of offshore outsourcing of services. Some preliminary evidence showed countries and companies in good conditions to improve their participation in the international market. The internationalization of these new firms from emerging countries and their learning process may need extension to existing theories, at least from the perspective of emerging and in the developing world

    AN OPTIMIZATION OF A GPU-BASED PARALLEL WIND FIELD MODULE

    Atmospheric radionuclide dispersion systems (ARDS) are important tools to predict the impact of radioactive releases from Nuclear Power Plants and guide people evacuation from affected areas. Four modules comprise ARDS: Source Term, Wind Field, Plume Dispersion and Doses Calculations. The slowest is the Wind Field Module that was previously parallelized using the CUDA C language. The statement purpose of this work is to show the speedup gain with the optimization of the already parallel code of the GPU-based Wind Field module, based in WEST model (Extrapolated from Stability and Terrain). Due to the parallelization done in the wind field module, it was observed that some CUDA processors became idle, thus contributing to a reduction in speedup. It was proposed in this work a way of allocating these idle CUDA processors in order to increase the speedup. An acceleration of about 4 times can be seen in the comparative case study between the regular CUDA code and the optimized CUDA code. These results are quite motivating and point out that even after a parallelization of code, a parallel code optimization should be taken into account
