    NASA Trapezoidal Wing Simulation Using Stress-w and One- and Two-Equation Turbulence Models

    The Wilcox 2006 stress-omega model (also referred to as WilcoxRSM-w2006) has been implemented in the NASA Langley code CFL3D and used to study a variety of 2-D and 3-D configurations. It predicted a variety of basic cases reasonably well, including secondary flow in a supersonic rectangular duct. One- and two-equation turbulence models that employ the Boussinesq constitutive relation were unable to predict this secondary flow accurately because it is driven by normal turbulent stress differences. For the NASA trapezoidal wing at high angles of attack, the WilcoxRSM-w2006 model predicted lower maximum lift than experiment, similar to results of a two-equation model

    Although natalizumab (anti-α4 integrin) represents an effective therapy for relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), it is associated with an increased risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), caused by the polyomavirus JC (JCV). The aim of this study was to explore natalizumab-induced phenotypic changes in peripheral blood T-lymphocytes and their relationship with JCV reactivation. Forty-four patients affected by RRMS were enrolled. Blood and urine samples were classified according to natalizumab infusion number: 0 (N0), 1-12 (N12), 13-24 (N24), 25-36 (N36), and over 36 (N > 36) infusions. JCV-DNA was detected in plasma and urine. T-lymphocyte phenotype was evaluated with flow cytometry. JCV serostatus was assessed. Ten healthy donors (HD), whose ages and sexes matched with the RRMS patients of the N0 group, were enrolled. CD8 effector (CD8 E) percentages were increased in natalizumab treated patients with detectable JCV-DNA in plasma or urine compared to JCV-DNA negative patients (JCV-) (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, resp.). Patients with CD8 E percentages above 10.4% tended to show detectable JCV-DNA in plasma and/or urine (ROC curve p = 0.001). The CD8 E was increased when JCV-DNA was detectable in plasma or urine, independently from JCV serology, for N12 and N24 groups (p < 0.01). As long as PML can affect RRMS patients under natalizumab treatment with a negative JCV serology, the assessment of CD8 E could help in the evaluation of JCV reactivation

    Purpose. With the coronavirus outbreak, the preventive measures include staying at home and isolation, increasing sedentary behaviours and risk for worsening of chronic diseases. To explore alternative forms of home-based physical activity, the study aim was to evaluate physiological (heart rate [HR], respiratory exchange ratio [RER], oxygen consumption [ O2], energy expenditure [EE], metabolic equivalent task [MET]) and psychological (session rating of perceived exertion [sRPE], enjoyment) parameters of real (Zumba® class [ZC]) and exergame (Zumba® Fitness Rush [ZFR]) activities in relation to sex. Methods. Overall, 12 female (age: 24.7 ± 0.9 years) and 8 male (age: 25.3 ± 2.1 years) college students randomly performed 2 experimental 60-min sessions, ZC and ZFR, during which HR (expressed as percentage of individual maximal HR [%HRmax]), O2, RER, MET and EE were measured. After each session, sRPE and Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) were used to monitor exercise intensity and enjoyment, respectively. Results. Main effects for sex (p = 0.02) and modality (p &lt; 0.0001) emerged for %HRmax, with women showing higher values than men and ZC showing higher values than ZFR. EE presented main effects for sex (p &lt; 0.0001) and modality (p = 0.0002), with higher values in men and in ZC. Main effect (p = 0.0001) for modality emerged also for O2 and MET, with higher values in ZC regardless of sex. No significant differences were observed for RER, sRPE, or PACES. Conclusions. Although ZC elicited higher cardiovascular and metabolic responses, ZFR, classified as a moderate-to-vigorous activity, could be used to maintain regular physical activity in a safe home environment during the coronavirus crisis

    Federated Learning Under Heterogeneous and Correlated Client Availability

    In Federated Learning (FL), devices - also referred to as clients - can exhibit heterogeneous availability patterns, often correlated over time and with other clients. This paper addresses the problem of heterogeneous and correlated client availability in FL. Our theoretical analysis is the first to demonstrate the negative impact of correlation on FL algorithms' convergence rate and highlights a trade-off between optimization error (related to convergence speed) and bias error (indicative of model quality). To optimize this trade-off, we propose Correlation-Aware FL (CA-Fed), a novel algorithm that dynamically balances the competing objectives of fast convergence and minimal model bias. CA-Fed achieves this by dynamically adjusting the aggregation weight assigned to each client and selectively excluding clients with high temporal correlation and low availability. Experimental evaluations on diverse datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of CA-Fed compared to state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, CA-Fed achieves the best trade-off between training time and test accuracy.     Data centers as active multi-energy systems for power grid decarbonization: A technical and economic analysis

    Power system decarbonization will be one of the main challenges confronting society over the next twenty to thirty years. Renewable energy sources (RES), such as wind and solar, will be the main resources supplying the power grid. Given their volatility, their integration into the grid necessitates planning and utilizing new flexibility options. Energy storage systems (ESS), multi-energy systems and active consumer involvement are three solutions attracting the scientific community's attention. Data centers (DCs) provide a very high degree of flexibility for consumers. They can be utilized to support system operators or integrate power generated by locally installed renewable energy source generators in the DC's network. This study is intended to contribute by developing a methodology for planning new flexibility options in DCs. The methodology developed treats DCs as active multi-energy systems. Control strategies were also developed. The technical and economic performance of the solutions implemented was evaluated

    Influence of Cognitive Orientation and Attentional Focus on Pain Perception

    Background. Recently, a growing interest has emerged in the role of attention and hypervigilance in the experience of pain. Shifting attention away from pain seems likely to reduce the perception of pain itself. Objectives. The present study has been designed to test the following overall hypotheses: (1) disposition to catastrophize, self-efficacy perceived in pain resistance (task self-efficacy), previous experiences concerning the tolerance of physical pain, and degree of impulsiveness are significant predictors of the decision to abandon a painful test such as the cold pressor test (CPT); (2) the manipulation of the attentive focus (internal or external) can influence the level of perceived pain. Methods. Effects of the manipulation of attentional focus (internal and external) on pain perception and response of trial abandonment were evaluated in a sample of university students (n = 246) subjected to the cold pressor test. Results. A significant effect (p < 0.05) was found through a test–retest comparison on the final level of perceived pain among subjects who had received instruction to externalize the focus of their attention (mixed factorial analysis of variance), but no significance was observed with respect to the decision to abandon the experiment. A general explanatory model of the abandonment behavior demonstrating overall good fit measurements was tested too. Conclusion. The abandonment of tests has been shown to be predicted mainly by catastrophic attitude. Attentive impulsiveness showed a further positive effect on catastrophic attitude. Perceived self-efficacy in the tolerance of pain limited learned helplessness, which in turn positively influenced catastrophizing
