    Characteristics of students who enter occupational therapy education through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) Clearing System

    Since the 1960s, there has been substantial research outside the United Kingdom (UK) on recruitment to occupational therapy education. Recent UK studies have explored the characteristics of mature students (Craik and Alderman 1998), first-year students (Craik et al 2001) and students with a first degree (Craik and Napthine 2001). Based on these studies, a semi-structured, self-report, postal questionnaire gathered data from 50 students who entered the BSc(Hons) Occupational Therapy course at Brunel University, London, via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service for the UK (UCAS) clearing system. The students tended to be younger and were more likely to be female and Caucasian and to have similar or higher academic qualifications than standardentry students at the same university. The majority first became aware of occupational therapy through previous work in a health care setting, although some did so while researching allied health professions. Although one-third originally had physiotherapy as their first career choice, 92% now considered that occupational therapy was what they wanted to do. The principal reason for applying through the clearing system was timing, with some applicants deciding late in the academic year to study occupational therapy. These findings add further weight to the need to promote the profession

    We are playing football: Seeing the game on Panapompom, PNG

    © Royal Anthropological Institute 2011.This article is about football, played by men from Panapompom in Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay province. Football is problematic not because it is culturally appropriated or modified, but rather because Panapompom desired accurately to reproduce the appearance of the international game. As such it questions conventional frames of reference. An interpretation in terms of culture obscures Panapompom interests in football: its globally recognizable character. It mattered profoundly that Panapompom people played football. Yet framing football as a universal sporting institution is equally inadequate, erasing the specific political project that was embedded in the game. Displacing the interpretative framings, I argue that football itself provides a context in which Panapompom people can judge themselves in relation to others, who are defined in terms of colonial and postcolonial discourses on ‘development’. Taking football as a contextualizing image, Panapompom people appear in distinctive ways in the field of relationships that it defines.ESR

    Stress-relaxation rates for eight varieties of peppers were measured. The specimens were loaded at 454,907 and 1361 grams and allowed to relax for time periods of 3.8 and 30 minutes. Stress levels used were 914, 1828 and 2741 gm/cm2. Floral Gem and Jalapeno varieties of peppers received the most attention

Until recently, men from Panapompom understood themselves to be engaged in a project of ‘development’, in which they would become more and more similar to white people. This was a desirable future. However, changes in the way Panapompom men work for money have resulted in a very different imagination of the future—one in which Panapompom people are not getting whiter, but blacker, and hence more and more excluded from the lives to which they aspire. Men now dive for bêche-de-mer, work which they regard as being particularly hard and dangerous. Diving has profound effects on the skin, blackening and hardening it, leading Panapompom men to liken themselves to the machines that create the wealth that white people use. These ‘mechanising’ effects that diving has on the black body lead men to see white people as the sole beneficiaries of the bêche-de-mer industry, and black people as mere tools or extensions. For bêche-de-mer divers, value and desired forms of life are lodged in Australia, Europe or America, while they find themselves excluded from this future by their growing blackness.ESR

    Identification and weighting of the most critical "real-life” drug-drug interactions with acenocoumarol in a tertiary care hospital

    Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the most clinically relevant drug-drug interactions (DDIs) at risk of affecting acenocoumarol safety in our tertiary care university hospital, a 2,000 bed institution. Methods: We identified DDIs occurring with acenocoumarol by combining two different sources of information: a 1-year retrospective analysis of acenocoumarol prescriptions and comedications from our Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system (n = 2,439 hospitalizations) and a retrospective study of clinical pharmacology consultations involving acenocoumarol over the past 14 years (1994-2007) (n = 407). We classified these DDIs using an original risk-analysis method. A criticality index was calculated for each associated drug by multiplying three scores based on mechanism of interaction, involvement in a supratherapeutic international normalized ratio (INR) (≥ 6) and involvement in a severe bleeding. Results: One hundred and twenty-six DDIs were identified and weighted. Twenty-eight drugs had a criticality index ≥ 20 and were therefore considered at high risk for interacting with acenocoumarol by increasing its effect: 75% of these drugs involved a pharmacokinetic mechanism and 14 % a pharmacodynamic mechanism. An unknown mechanism of interaction was involved in 11 % of drugs. Conclusion: Twenty-eight specific drugs were identified as being at high risk for interacting with acenocoumarol in our hospital using an original risk-analysis method. Most analyzed drugs interact with acenocoumarol via a pharmacokinetic mechanism. Actions such as the implementation of alerts in our CPOE system should be specifically developed for these drug

    Disease causing mutations in inverted formin 2 regulate its binding to G-actin, F-actin capping protein (CapZ α-1) and profilin 2

    Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a devastating form of nephrotic syndrome which ultimately leads to end stage renal failure (ESRF). Mutations in inverted formin 2 (INF2), a member of the formin family of actin-regulating proteins, have recently been associated with a familial cause of nephrotic syndrome characterized by FSGS. INF2 is a unique formin that can both polymerize and depolymerize actin filaments. How mutations in INF2 lead to disease is unknown. In the present study, we show that three mutations associated with FSGS, E184K, S186P and R218Q, reduce INF2 auto-inhibition and increase association with monomeric actin. Furthermore using a combination of GFP–INF2 expression in human podocytes and GFP-Trap purification coupled with MS we demonstrate that INF2 interacts with profilin 2 and the F-actin capping protein, CapZ α-1. These interactions are increased by the presence of the disease causing mutations. Since both these proteins are involved in the dynamic turnover and restructuring of the actin cytoskeleton these changes strengthen the evidence that aberrant regulation of actin dynamics underlies the pathogenesis of disease
