    Visualising urban sustainability

    Get PDF
Developing sustainable urban environments is complex and requires a number of factors – including social, economic and environmental sustainability - to be taken into account. This project is prototype software that produces a 3D virtual model of urban developments allowing viewers to see the short and long-term implications of courses of action

    Physical properties of graphene nano-devices

In this doctoral thesis the two dimensional material graphene has been studied in depth with particular respect to Zener tunnelling devices. From the hexagonal structure the Hamiltonian at a Dirac point was derived with the option of including an energy gap. This Hamiltonian was then used to obtain the tunnelling properties of various graphene nano-devices; the devices studied include Zener tunnelling potential barriers such as single and double graphene potential steps. A form of the Landauer formalism was obtained for graphene devices. Combined with the scattering properties of potential barriers the current and conductance was found for a wide range of graphene nano-devices. These results were then compared to recently obtained experimental results for graphene nano-ribbons, showing many similarities between nano-ribbons and infinite sheet graphene. The methods studied were then applied to materials which have been shown to possess three dimensional Dirac cones known as topological insulators. In the case of Cd3As2 the Dirac cone is asymmetrical with respect to the zz-direction, the effect of this asymmetry has been discussed with comparison to the symmetrical case

Relations between corporate economic performance, environmental disclosure and greenhouse gas emissions: new insights.

    Get PDF
This study examines the associations and causations between corporate economic performance, environmental disclosure and greenhouse gas emissions, utilizing a large, longitudinal, multi-country dataset disaggregated between developed and developing countries. The methodology uses a simultaneous equation model with system estimation to deal with endogeneity between the variables, and Granger causality tests to indicate their direction of causation. A robust result is that lower emissions are strongly associated with better economic performance. After pretesting for stationarity, we find evidence of a one-way causation from emissions and environmental disclosure to economic performance, but no evidence of reverse causation. We also find strong evidence of a one-way causation from emissions to disclosure, but no evidence of reverse causation. The overarching policy implication is that environmental performance, as measured by greenhouse gas emissions, plays a crucial role in the formulation of business strategy at the firm level and government environmental policy at national and international levels

The impact of corporate environmental management practices on environmental performance.

    Get PDF
This study draws on neo-institutional theory to examine how and why corporate environmental management practices might affect environmental performance. It contributes to the literature by using a large, global dataset to investigate the impact of ten corporate environmental management practices on greenhouse gas emissions or emissions intensity. It focuses on greenhouse gas emissions which pose an existential threat to the people and planet, and the environmental management practices of corporations whose effectiveness has provoked cynicism and claims of "greenwash". Our results are based on a dynamic, robust, and large-scale econometric analysis, which includes tests of association and Granger-causation in comparison to earlier research. A key finding, which is of interest not only to the academic literature but also to policy makers and managers, is that environmental performance impacts environmental management practices but not vice versa, supporting the hypothesis that corporations adopt these practices as a symbolic legitimising device rather than a genuine attempt derived from moral obligation to reduce their greenhouse gases or carbon intensity

The extent of financial disclosure and its determinants in an emerging capital market: the case of Egypt.

This paper uses panel data analysis to investigate the extent and determinants of disclosure levels of non-financial companies quoted on the Egyptian Stock Exchange. It distinguishes between private sector companies and public business sector companies in terms of company characteristics and disclosure practice. Results show gradual increases in disclosure levels, with a high compliance for mandatory disclosure, although the voluntary disclosure level was rather limited. Public business sector companies appear generally to disclose less information than private sector companies. Furthermore, more profitable companies disclose more information than less profitable ones. Results for firm size, gearing and stock activity are mixed
