Transparency, Protest, and Democratic Stability
Democratic rule is maintained so long as all relevant actors in the political system comply with the institutional rules of the game – democratic institutions must be self-enforcing. We examine the role of transparency in supporting a democratic equilibrium. Transparency improves the functioning of elections: In transparent polities, elections more effectively resolve adverse selection problems between the public and their rulers. Transparency increases popular satisfaction with democracy and inhibits challenges to the democratic order. We provide a game-theoretic model, test these claims, and find they enjoy empirical support. Transparency is associated with a reduction in both the probability of democratic collapse and of the irregular removal of democratic leaders. Transparency stabilizes democratic rule
Nuclear Polarizabilities and Logarithmic Sum Rules
The electric polarizability and logarithmic mean-excitation energy are
calculated for the deuteron using techniques introduced in atomic physics.
These results are then used to improve limits on the atomic-deuterium frequency
shift due to nuclear polarization in the unretarded dipole limit, as well as

Clinical evaluation of indoramin as the sole agent for the treatment of hypertension
An open-ended clinical trial of Indoramin (WY-21901), a new antihypertensive agent with both a-adrenergic blocking and cardio-inhibitory properties, was conducted on a group of 27 patients with mild or moderate essential hypertension. Blood pressures, erect and supine, were effectively lowered. In 70% of the patients the mean standing diastolic pressures were well controlled. Heart rate was not significantly lowe.red. Side-effects occurred in 80% of patients, but did not persist in most of them. Severe side-effects, necessitating withdrawal of Indoramin, were experienced by one-third of the patients. Higher-Order Nuclear-Polarizability Corrections in Atomic Hydrogen
Nuclear-polarizability corrections that go beyond unretarded-dipole
approximation are calculated analytically for hydrogenic (atomic) S-states.
These retardation corrections are evaluated numerically for deuterium and
contribute -0.68 kHz, for a total polarization correction of 18.58(7) kHz. Our
results are in agreement with one previous numerical calculation, and the
retardation corrections completely account for the difference between two
previous calculations. The uncertainty in the deuterium polarizability
correction is substantially reduced. At the level of 0.01 kHz for deuterium,
only three primary nuclear observables contribute: the electric polarizability,
, the paramagnetic susceptibility, , and the third Zemach
moment, . Cartesian multipole decomposition of the virtual

EBNA3C interacts with Gadd34 and counteracts the unfolded protein response
EBNA3C is an EBV-encoded nuclear protein, essential for proliferation of EBV infected B-lymphocytes. Using EBNA3C amino acids 365-545 in a yeast two hybrid screen, we found an interaction with the Growth Arrest and DNA-damage protein, Gadd34. When both proteins are overexpressed, Gadd34 can interact with EBNA3C in both nuclear and cytoplasmic compartments. Amino acids 483-610 of Gadd34, including the two PP1a interaction, and the HSV-1 ICPγ34.5 homology domains, are required for the interaction. Furthermore, interaction is lost with a mutant of EBNA3C (509 DVIEVID 515→AVIAVIA), that abolishes EBNA3C coactivation ability as well as SUMO interaction[1]. In B-cells, Gadd34, and EBNA3C are present in a complex with PP1a using microcystin sepharose affinity purification, Using a lymphoblastoid cell line in which EBNA3C protein levels are conditional on hydroxytamoxifen, surprisingly, we found that (i) EBNA3C maintains phosphorylation of eIF2α at serine 51, and (ii) protects against ER stress induced activation of the unfolded protein response as measured by XBP1 (u) versus XBP1(s) protein expression and N-terminal ATF6 cleavage. In reporter assays, overexpression of Gadd34 enhances EBNA3C's ability to co-activate EBNA2 activation of the LMP1 promoter. Collectively the data suggest that EBNA3C interacts with Gadd34, activating the upstream component of the UPR (eIF2α phosphorylation) while preventing downstream UPR events (XBP1 activation and ATF6 cleavage)

Predicting dementia from primary care records: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Introduction
Possible dementia is usually identified in primary care by general practitioners (GPs) who refer to specialists for diagnosis. Only two-thirds of dementia cases are currently recorded in primary care, so increasing the proportion of cases diagnosed is a strategic priority for the UK and internationally. Clinical entities in the primary care record may indicate risk of developing dementia, and could be combined in a predictive model to help find patients who are missing a diagnosis. We conducted a meta-analysis to identify clinical entities with potential for use in such a predictive model for dementia in primary care.
Methods and Findings
We conducted a systematic search in PubMed, Web of Science and primary care database bibliographies. We included cohort or case-control studies which used routinely collected primary care data, to measure the association between any clinical entity and dementia. Meta-analyses were performed to pool odds ratios. A sensitivity analysis assessed the impact of non-independence of cases between studies.
From a sift of 3836 papers, 20 studies, all European, were eligible for inclusion, comprising >1 million patients. 75 clinical entities were assessed as risk factors for all cause dementia, Alzheimer’s (AD) and Vascular dementia (VaD). Data included were unexpectedly heterogeneous, and assumptions were made about definitions of clinical entities and timing as these were not all well described. Meta-analysis showed that neuropsychiatric symptoms including depression, anxiety, and seizures, cognitive symptoms, and history of stroke, were positively associated with dementia. Cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, heart disease, dyslipidaemia and diabetes were positively associated with VaD and negatively with AD. Sensitivity analyses showed similar results.
Conclusions
These findings are of potential value in guiding feature selection for a risk prediction tool for dementia in primary care. Limitations include findings being UK-focussed. Further predictive entities ascertainable from primary care data, such as changes in consulting patterns, were absent from the literature and should be explored in future studies
SUICIDE TERRORISM AND THE BACKLASH EFFECT
This paper presents a game-theoretic model of suicide terrorism containing three agents: the terrorist leader, a targeted government, and potential terrorist supporters. Supporters join the terrorist group if they gain more from their participation than from their economic opportunities. Preemptive measures by the government can result in a backlash that encourages recruitment through new grievances. Suicide attacks can also lead to recruitment. Increases in preemption costs and/or economic opportunities can reduce the overall level of terrorism, while increasing the proportion of suicide to normal attacks. An increase in the effect of preemption on recruitment, or the propaganda effect of suicide bombings has the opposite effect of increasing normal and suicide attacks, but decreasing the proportion of suicide to normal attacks in the terrorist organization’s strategy profile
