The Need and Requirements to a Strategy Ontology
The importance of strategy and strategy construct is not a new
phenomenon. However as strategy work becomes less tangible, concerns with
understanding, describing, and managing strategies develops into an increasingly
complex subject. Current strategy concepts are dispersed and lack integration.
Moreover, the enablement of modelling practices around strategy concepts
considering the entire strategy lifecycle are also missing. Consequently, this
paper focuses on issues with strategy in theory and practice, why a strategy
ontology is needed and how this can be developed
Leading the Practice in Layered Enterprise Architecture
While Enterprise Architecture (EA) causes organisations to think,
work and model in domains, there are inadequacies in such a waterfall approach.
By restating domains as layers, i.e. LEAD (Layered Enterprise Architecture Design/
Development) based on the LEAD Enterprise Ontology, EA performs better
in enterprise layers and levels of abstraction. Through LEAD, the domain relationships
are also better captured, hence leading the advancement of agile EA

Jitter and Decision-level Noise Separation in A/D Converters
Gaussian aperture jitter leads to a reduced SNR of A/D converters. Also other noise sources, faults and nonlinearities affect the digital output signal. A measurement setup for a new off-chip diagnosis method, which systematically separates the jitter-induced errors from the errors caused by these other factors, is described. Deterministic errors are removed via a subtracting technique. High-level ADC simulations and measurements have been carried out to determine relations between the size of the jitter or decision-level noise and the remaining random errors. Total posterior leg open wound management with free anterolateral thigh flap: case and literature review.
Soft tissue coverage of the exposed Achilles tendon is a unique reconstructive challenge. In this report, we describe the management of a large posterior leg wound with exposed Achilles tendon using a free anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap. A careful review of alternative reconstructive options is included, along with their respective advantages and disadvantages. A 32-year-old white man suffered a fulminant right lower extremity soft tissue infection requiring extensive debridement of the entire posterior surface of the right leg. The resulting large soft tissue defect included exposure of the Achilles tendon. Reconstruction of the defect was achieved with an ALT flap and split-thickness skin graft for coverage of the Achilles tendon and gastrocnemius muscle, respectively. The patient was able to ambulate independently within 2 months of the procedure
Drift diving by hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean

MASTS is funded by the Scottish Funding Council (grant reference HR09011) and contributing institutions (LB).Many pinniped species perform a specific dive type, referred to as a ‘drift dive’, where they drift passively through the water column. This dive type has been suggested to function as a resting/sleeping or food processing dive, and can be used as an indication of feeding success by calculating the daily change in vertical drift rates over time, which reflects the relative fluctuations in buoyancy of the animal as the proportion of lipids in the body change. Northwest Atlantic hooded seals perform drift dives at regular intervals throughout their annual migration across the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. We found that the daily change in drift rate varied with geographic location and the time of year and that this differed between sexes. Positive changes in buoyancy (reflecting increased lipid stores) were evident throughout their migration range and although overlapping somewhat, they were not statistically associated with high use areas as indicated by First Passage Time (FPT). Differences in the seasonal fluctuations of buoyancy between males and females suggest that they experience a difference in patterns of energy gain and loss during winter and spring, associated with breeding. Optimal development of the North Sea's oil fields - the reply
We consider that Wall et al's technical criticisms of our monograph are irrelevant or ill-confused. Their volumetric analytic method is inadequate and their approach to the platform/wells location question conflicts with oil industry views. On the economic aspects, Wall et al avoid the central issue we considered - on how to resolve company-government conflict - and instead take up an issue - on the overall speed of North Sea development - which we did not discuss. We show, moreover, how this criticism of our study is largely unsubstantiated personal opinion and, as such, unworthy of consideration, even if many of Wall et al's arguments were not erroneous
The value of ontology, The BPM ontology
It is generally accepted that the creation of added value requires collaboration inside and between organizations. Collaboration requires sharing knowledge (e.g., a shared understanding of business processes) between trading partners and between colleagues. It is on the (unique) knowledge that is shared between and created by colleagues that organizations build their competitive advantage. To take full advantage of this knowledge, it should be disseminated as widely as possible within an organization. Nonaka distinguished tacit knowledge, which is personal, context specific, and not so easy to communicate (e.g., intuitions, unarticulated mental models, embodied technological skills), from explicit knowledge, which is meaningful information articulated in clear language, including numbers and diagrams.
Tacit knowledge can be disseminated through socialization (e.g., face-to-face communication, sharing experiences), which implies a reduced dissemination speed, or can be externalized , which is the conversion of tacit into explicit knowledge. Although explicit knowledge can take many forms (e.g., business (process) models, manuals), this chapter focuses on ontologies, which are versatile knowledge artifacts created through externalization, with the power to fuel Nonaka’s knowledge spiral. Nonaka’s knowledge spiral visualizes how a body of unique corporate knowledge, and hence a competitive advantage, is developed through a collaborative and iterative knowledge creation process that involves iterative cycles of externalization, combination, and internalization. When corporate knowledge is documented with ontology, a knowledge spiral leads to ontology evolution
