Sparticle Spectrum Constraints
The supersymmetric standard model with supergravity-inspired soft breaking
terms predicts a rich pectrum of sparticles to be discovered at the SSC, LHC
and NLC. Because there are more supersymmetric particles than unknown
parameters, one can write down sum rules relating their masses. We discuss the
pectrum of sparticles from this point of view. Some of the sum rules do not
depend on the input parameters and can be used to test the consistency of the
model, while others are useful in determining the input parameters of the
theory. If supersymmetry is discovered but the sum rules turn out to be
violated, it will be evidence of new physics beyond the minimal supersymmetric

Ising-like antiferromagnetism on the octahedral sublattice of a cobalt-containing garnet and the potential for quantum criticality
In this contribution, we report that CaY2Co2Ge3O12 exhibits an unusual anisotropic and chainlike
antiferromagnetic arrangement of spins despite crystallizing in the highly symmetric garnet structure. Using
low-temperature powder neutron diffraction and symmetry analysis, we identify a magnetic structure consisting
of chainlike motifs oriented along the body diagonals of the cubic unit cell with moments pointing parallel to
the chain direction due to the strong Ising character of the Co ions. Antiferromagnetic order sets in below 6 K
and exhibits both temperature- and field-induced magnetic transitions at high fields. Combining the results, we
present a magnetic phase diagram that suggests CaY2Co2Ge3O12 undergoes a quantum phase transition at low
temperatures and moderate fields

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer surveillance for which cystoscopy is partly replaced by microsatellite analysis of urine: a cost-effective alternative?
OBJECTIVE To determine how good microsatellite analysis (MA) markers in voided urine samples should be to make a surveillance procedure cost-effective in which cystoscopy is partly replaced by MA for patients with non-muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma (NMI-UC). PATIENTS AND METHODS We constructed a semi-Markov model with a time horizon of 2 years, and a man aged 65 years as reference case. Data were used from a randomized trial (including 448 patients with NMI-UC from 10 hospitals), and from other data sources. Uncertainties in Coupling Constant Unification
The status of coupling constant unification in the standard model and its
supersymmetric extension are discussed. Uncertainties associated with the input
coupling constants, , threshold corrections at the low and high scales,
and possible nonrenormalizable operators are parametrized and estimated. A
simple parametrization of a general supersymmetric new particle spectrum is
given. It is shown that an effective scale can be defined, but for a
realistic spectrum it may differ considerably from the typical new particle
masses. The implications of the lower (higher) values of

Hypercharge and the Cosmological Baryon Asymmetry
Stringent bounds on baryon and lepton number violating interactions have been
derived from the requirement that such interactions, together with electroweak
instantons, do not destroy a cosmological baryon asymmetry produced at an
extremely high temperature in the big bang. While these bounds apply in
specific models, we find that they are generically evaded. In particular, the
only requirement for a theory to avoid these bounds is that it contain charged
particles which, during a certain cosmological epoch, carry a non-zero
hypercharge asymmetry. Hypercharge neutrality of the universe then dictates
that the remaining particles must carry a compensating hypercharge density,
which is necessarily shared amongst them so as to give a baryon asymmetry.
Hence the generation of a hypercharge density in a sector of the theory forces

Sex hormone associations with breast cancer risk and the mediation of randomized trial postmenopausal hormone therapy effects
Introduction: Paradoxically, a breast cancer risk reduction with conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) and a risk elevation with CEE plus medroxyprogesterone acetate (CEE + MPA) were observed in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) randomized controlled trials. The effects of hormone therapy on serum sex hormone levels, and on the association between baseline sex hormones and disease risk, may help explain these divergent breast cancer findings. Methods: Serum sex hormone concentrations were measured for 348 breast cancer cases in the CEE + MPA trial and for 235 cases in the CEE trial along with corresponding pair-matched controls, nested within the WHI trials of healthy postmenopausal women. Association and mediation analyses, to examine the extent to which sex hormone levels and changes can explain the breast cancer findings, were conducted using logistic regression. Results: Following CEE treatment, breast cancer risk was associated with higher concentrations of baseline serum estrogens, and with lower concentrations of sex hormone binding globulin. However, following CEE + MPA, there was no association of breast cancer risk with baseline sex hormone levels. The sex hormone changes from baseline to year 1 provided an explanation for much of the reduced breast cancer risk with CEE. Specifically, the treatment odds ratio (95% confidence interval) increased from 0.71 (0.43, 1.15) to 0.92 (0.41, 2.09) when the year 1 measures were included in the logistic regression analysis. In comparison, the CEE + MPA odds ratio was essentially unchanged when these year 1 measures were included. Conclusions: Breast cancer risk remains low following CEE use among women having favorable baseline sex hormone profiles, but CEE + MPA evidently produces a breast cancer risk for all women similar to that for women having an unfavorable baseline sex hormone profile. These patterns could reflect breast ductal epithelial cell stimulation by CEE + MPA that is substantially avoided with CEE, in conjunction with relatively more favorable effects of either regimen following a sustained period of estrogen deprivation. Immunohistochemical evaluation of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 and estrogen and progesterone receptors in breast carcinoma in Jordan
INTRODUCTION: Although breast carcinoma (BC) is the most common malignancy affecting Jordanian females and the affected population in Jordan is younger than that in the West, no information is available on its biological characteristics. Our aims in this study are to evaluate the expression of estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) and Her-2/neu overexpression in BC in Jordan, and to compare the expression of these with other prognostic parameters for BC such as histological type, histological grade, tumor size, patients' age, and number of lymph node metastases. METHOD: This is a retrospective study conducted in the Department of Pathology at Jordan University of Science and Technology. A confirmed 91 cases of BC diagnosed in the period 1995 to 1998 were reviewed and graded. We used immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of ER, PR, and Her-2. Immunohistochemical findings were correlated with age, tumor size, grade and axillary lymph node status. RESULTS: Her-2 was overexpressed in 24% of the cases. The mean age of Her-2 positive cases was 42 years as opposed to 53 years among Her-2 negative cases (p = 0.0001). Her-2 expression was inversely related to ER and PR expression. Her-2 positive tumors tended to be larger than Her-2 negative tumors with 35% overexpression among T3 tumors as opposed to 22% among T2 tumors (p = 0.13). Her-2 positive cases tended to have higher rates of axillary metastases, but this did not reach statistical significance. ER and PR positive cases were seen in older patients with smaller tumor sizes. CONCLUSION: Her-2 overexpression was seen in 24% of BC affecting Jordanian females. Her-2 overexpression was associated with young age at presentation, larger tumor size, and was inversely related to ER and PR expression. One-fifth of the carcinomas were Her-2 positive and ER negative. This group appears to represent an aggressive form of BC presenting at a young age with large primary tumors and a high rate of four or more axillary lymph node metastases
