Inferring the time-dependent complex Ginzburg-Landau equation from modulus data

We present a formalism for inferring the equation of evolution of a complex wave field that is known to obey an otherwise unspecified (2+1)-dimensional time-dependent complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, given field moduli over three closely-spaced planes. The phase of the complex wave field is retrieved via a non-interferometric method, and all terms in the equation of evolution are determined using only the magnitude of the complex wave field. The formalism is tested using simulated data for a generalized nonlinear system with a single-component complex wave field. The method can be generalized to multi-component complex fields.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure

Toward a New Mine Action Strategy for Cambodia

    Get PDF
This report presents the findings, conclusions, and recommendations from a study on the need for a new national mine action strategy for Cambodia. The study entailed a document review; the preparation and distribution of a stakeholder questionnaire and the analysis of responses; and interviews with representatives from a number of mine action and disability assistance organisations, government ministries, etc

Peculiar properties of phase transitions in Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-xBaTiO3 (0<x<6) lead-free relaxor ferroelectrics seen via acoustic emission

    Get PDF
Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-xBaTiO3 (0<x<6) relaxor ferroelectrics crystals were investigated by means of dielectric and acoustic emission methods. Dielectric curves exhibit the slightly visible small maxima near the depolarization temperatures, Td, and the wide maxima at the temperatures of Tm, whereas the acoustic emission exhibits the sharp bursts, corresponding to Td, Tlm, which is known to be a temperature exhibiting a strong frequency dispersion, TRE, which is known to be a temperature above which a frequency dispersion vanishes, and the Tm and the Tp manifesting a transition to the paraelectric phase. Based on the AE data it was established that all these characteristic temperatures shift down as x increases, but with different slopes. A mechanism of such the differences is discussed

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2012Moule (2005) suggest diverse students suffer isolation, invisibility and inappropriate labeling in many educational institutions. This mixed-methods study explores the multicultural awareness, knowledge, skills, and attitudes of prospective teachers. The research questions are: (1) what are the multicultural awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes of prospective teachers during their final year of course work in a teacher education program (2) what are the attitudes and beliefs of prospective teachers about Multicultural Education and (3) how are prospective teachers prepared to teach diverse student populations in their teacher education programs? The mixed-methods inquiry used a survey and interviews to ascertain the multicultural awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes and beliefs of prospective teachers as related to Multicultural Education. This inquiry consisted of 36 survey respondents and three interviews of prospective teachers who provided “rich descriptions” of their multicultural awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes. The sampling population consisted of (n=604) eligible participants from the three universities teacher preparation programs who were in their final year of course work. Prospective teachers in their final year of course work had completed all coursework and teaching practicum or had completed all course work but not teaching practicum for the 2010-2011 academic school year. Results from the survey indicated that prospective teachers feel that they are being prepared to teach diverse student populations, however when face-to- face interivews were conducted, the researcher found that the prospective teachers did not feel as confident in their preparation to teach diverse student populations as opposed to what was affirmed in the survey. This would suggest more opportunities are needed for prospective teachers to gain awareness, knowledge, and skills in Multiculture Education in a practical sense.Introduction -- Literature review -- Methodology -- Findings -- Discussions and recommendations -- Appendix A. Re-Forming vision. On the governmentality of Griersonian documentary film

    Get PDF
© 2015 Taylor & Francis. This essay traces and discusses John Grierson\u27s programme for documentary film and its projected function and operation within liberal democracy. It is argued that documentary film as envisioned and propagated by Grierson neither set out to advance \u27open\u27 and/or controversial public discourse \u27from an Enlightenment standpoint\u27 (Rosen, Philip. 2001. Change Mummified: Cinema, Historicity, Theory. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 249) nor to educate its popular audiences through the dissemination of facts. As such Griersonian documentary film should be less located within the pedagogical tradition of the Enlightenment and was not to mainly function as a \u27discourse of sobriety\u27 (Nichols, Bill. 1991. Representing Reality: Issues and Concepts in Documentary. Bloomington: Indiana University Press). Rather, it was to insensibly shape subjectivities and agents by strategically arranging \u27visions of the real\u27. Documentary set out to model what Grierson termed \u27the subconscious\u27, the implicit framework that shaped citizen\u27s thoughts, desires, emotions and agency by which they governed their selves, others and by extension society at large into the future. Grierson\u27s documentary programme decisively governmentalised so-called non-fiction film as a specific technique of democratic government. It sought to render the formative and \u27creative\u27 aspects of its production transparent in favour of effect through affect by shaping appropriate visions for a reality yet to become. Thereby Grierson\u27s programme set out to strategically subjectify popular audiences/\u27ordinary citizens\u27 towards a desirable and \u27better\u27 national and global future

Rapid detection of G6PD deficiency SNPs using a novel amplicon-based MinION Sequencing Assay

Plasmodium vivax malaria remains a significant global health challenge, complicated by the parasite’s ability to form dormant liver stages (hypnozoites) that cause relapses. Radical cure of P. vivax malaria requires administration of a hypnozoitocidal drug, such as primaquine or tafenoquine. However, these drugs can cause severe haemolysis in individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. G6PD deficiency is caused by more than 230 different variants at the gene level that confer different degrees of deficiency phenotypically. Understanding the distribution of different G6PD variants in affected populations is essential to inform safer antimalarial treatment strategies. This study aimed to develop a cost-effective sequencing assay targeting key regions of the G6PD gene, suitable for field deployment. A novel assay based on Nanopore technology was designed to amplify two amplicons covering exon 3 to exon 13, focusing on known variants associated with enzyme deficiency. A total of 79 samples from individuals in Cambodia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and China were sequenced, and a bioinformatics pipeline was created for the targeted variant calling of 192 G6PD SNP mutations. The assay demonstrated reliable detection of known variants, with high concordance between runs, within runs, and with Sanger sequencing. The Nanopore MinION long-amplicon sequencing assay offers a robust and portable solution for large-scale G6PD genotyping in low-resource settings, that will improve malaria control and elimination strategies by enabling safer antimalarial treatment
