Computer-Aided Conceptual Design Through TRIZ-based Manipulation of Topological Optimizations
Organised by: Cranfield UniversityIn a recent project the authors proposed the adoption of Optimization Systems [1] as a bridging element
between Computer-Aided Innovation (CAI) and PLM to identify geometrical contradictions [2], a particular
case of the TRIZ physical contradiction [3].
A further development of the research has revealed that the solutions obtained from several topological
optimizations can be considered as elementary customized modeling features for a specific design task. The
topology overcoming the arising geometrical contradiction can be obtained through a manipulation of the
density distributions constituting the conflicting pair. Already two strategies of density combination have been

Archeologia industriale della panificazione: indagini e prospettive di studio
Lo studio che presento ha per oggetto uno specifico settore produttivo, quello della panificazione, che fino ad oggi è rimasta pressoché esclusa dalla seppur attenta lente di ingrandimento dell’archeologia industriale. La rarità di studi di settore nonché la quasi totale assenza di musei sul tema della panificazione autonomi da altre tematiche (civiltà contadina, strumenti agricoli, etc.) e la mancanza di uno studio specifico dal punto di vista archeologico industriale, mi ha spinto ad intraprendere questa indagine. Ho cercato quindi di fornire una visione d’insieme della storia della panificazione, che nello stesso tempo mettesse in risalto i caratteri peculiari di ciascuna epoca, e sistema di produzione, ricostruendo anche l’evoluzione “contemporanea” delle tecniche e dei macchinari utilizzati nel processo produttivo della preparazione del pane, dal XIX secolo fino ai giorni nostri: dalla madia alla linea continua. Successivamente ho effettuato un’indagine sul campo presso due panifici, come vedremo diametralmente opposti. L’indagine sul campo è anche la sua ripresa fotografica, ho quindi filmato e montato un video-documentario in modo da comprendere meglio i processi produttivi di entrambi i panifici presi in considerazione.
Inoltre ho cercato di stabilire delle linee di riferimento, disquisendo e descrivendo i modi in cui si è organizzata storicamente la produzione del pane, dedicando spazio anche ad alcune fonti visive rappresentanti il mondo del pane e della panificazione.
Questa indagine non pretende essere un lavoro esauriente, ma mira ad individuare dei punti di riferimento ed indica alcune piste da seguire. In questo quadro voglio augurarmi che da questo lavoro possano trarre spunto successive prospettive di studio
Assessment of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile conservation status by standard and putative approaches: the case study of Santa Marinella meadow (Italy, W Mediterranean)
The conservation status of the Posidonia oceanica meadow at Santa Marinella (Rome) was evaluated through both standard (bed density, leaf biometry, "A" coefficient, Leaf Area Index, rhizome production) and biochemical/genetic approaches (total phenol content and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA marker). The bio-chemical/genetic results are in agreement with those obtained by standard approaches. The bed under study was ranked as a disturbed one, due to its low density, and high heterogeneity in leaf biometry, LAI values, "A" coefficient and primary production. This low quality ranking is confirmed by both mean phenol content in plants, quite high and scattered, and by the low genetic variability in the meadow, with a very high similarity of specimen at a local scale. Hence, these two putative approaches clearly identify the endangered conservation status of the meadow. They link plant biodiversity and ecophysiology to ecosystem 'health'. Furthermore, they are repeatable and standardizable and could be usefully introduced in meadows monitoring to check environmental quality
What surprised you? A questionnaire to map unexpectedness through FBS variables
The paper presents the analysis of an original online survey that aims at checking the factors triggering surprise in randomly chosen evaluators who were submitted a set of surprising products. The authors use the answers to check the capability of a situated FBS-based model to help catch the main factors triggering surprise in products, here seen as a mismatch between what is interpreted and previously conceived expectations. The survey questionnaire shows to be effective in grabbing surprising factors and the results demonstrate that the model allows a strong ex-post convergence in the investigation of surprising factors
Product Planning techniques: investigating the differences between research trajectories and industry expectations
According to several literature sources, Product Planning is acknowledged as a primary driver of future commercial success for new designed products, and it is schematically constituted by the identification of business opportunities and the selection of most promising alternatives. Despite the recalled relevance of Product Planning, it emerges that a marginal quantity of companies have adopted formal methods to carry out this task. The paper attempts to provide a major understanding about such a limited implementation of Product Planning techniques and other open issues emerging from the analysis of the literature concerning the initial phases of engineering design cycles. The presented study investigates the claimed benefits of methods described in the literature, the level to which such tools are diffused through educational programs in Technical Institutes, the expectations and the demands of a sample of enterprises with respect to new tools supporting Product Planning. It emerges that, whereas existing methods strive to fulfil relevant properties according to the perception of the companies, limitations come out in terms of the transfer of the proposed techniques and their perceived reliability

Denervation does not induce muscle atrophy through oxidative stress
Denervation leads to the activation of the catabolic pathways, such as the ubiquitin-proteasome and autophagy, resulting in skeletal muscle atrophy and weakness. Furthermore, denervation induces oxidative stress in skeletal muscle, which is thought to contribute to the induction of skeletal muscle atrophy. Several muscle diseases are characterized by denervation, but the molecular pathways contributing to muscle atrophy have been only partially described. Our study delineates the kinetics of activation of oxidative stress response in skeletal muscle following denervation. Despite the denervation-dependent induction of oxidative stress in skeletal muscle, treatments with anti-oxidant drugs do not prevent the reduction of muscle mass. Our results indicate that, although oxidative stress may contribute to the activation of the response to denervation, it is not responsible by itself of oxidative damage or neurogenic muscle atrophy
Ecophysiological Plasticity and Bacteriome Shift in the Seagrass Halophila stipulacea along a Depth Gradient in the Northern Red Sea
Halophila stipulacea is a small tropical seagrass species. It is the dominant seagrass species in the Gulf of Aqaba (GoA; northern Red Sea), where it grows in both shallow and deep environments (1-50 m depth). Native to the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean, this species has invaded the Mediterranean and has recently established itself in the Caribbean Sea. Due to its invasive nature, there is growing interest to understand this species’ capacity to adapt to new conditions, which might be attributed to its ability to thrive in a broad range of ecological niches. In this study, a multidisciplinary approach was used to depict variations in morphology, biochemistry (pigment and phenol content) and epiphytic bacterial communities along a depth gradient (4-28 m) in the GoA. Along this gradient, H. stipulacea increased leaf area and pigment contents (Chlorophyll a and b, total Carotenoids), while total phenol contents were mostly uniform. H. stipulacea displayed a well conserved core bacteriome, as assessed by 454-pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene reads amplified from metagenomic DNA. The core bacteriome aboveground (leaves) and belowground (roots and rhizomes), was composed of more than 100 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) representing 63 and 52% of the total community in each plant compartment, respectively, with a high incidence of the classes Alphaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, and Deltaproteobacteria across all depths. Above and belowground communities were different and showed higher within-depth variability at the intermediate depths (9 and 18 m) than at the edges. Plant parts showed a clear influence in shaping the communities while depth showed a greater influence on the belowground communities. Overall, results highlighted a different ecological status of H. stipulacea at the edges of the gradient (4-28 m), where plants showed not only marked differences in morphology and biochemistry, but also the most distinct associated bacterial consortium. We demonstrated the pivotal role of morphology, biochemistry (pigment and phenol content), and epiphytic bacterial communities in helping plants to cope with environmental and ecological variations. The plant/holobiont capability to persist and adapt to environmental changes probably has an important role in its ecological resilience and invasiveness
Comparative analysis of bed density, total phenol content and protein expression pattern in Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile
Posidonia oceanica meadows are experiencing a progressive decline, and monitoring their status is crucial for the maintenance of these ecosystems. We performed a comparativeanalysis of bed density, total phenol content and protein expression pattern to assess the conservation status of Posidonia plants from the S. Marinella (Rome, Italy) meadow. The total phenol content was inversely related to maximum bed density, confirming the relationship between high phenol content and stressful conditions. In addition, protein expression pattern profilesshowed that the number of differentially expressed proteins was dramatically reduced in the latest years compared to previous analyses. Our results support the usefulness of integrating solid descriptors, such as phenol content, with novel biochemical/molecular approaches in the monitoring of meadows
