Creating an Environment That Encourages Women Entrepreneurs
If women do not participate fully in entrepreneurial activities, we lose half the potential of our society and economic development will be limited. Women who do take on entrepreneurial roles succeed admirably. Thus, their participation is all the more important. This article cites a speech by Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's COO, in which she offers several reasons for women's lack of participation and leadership. These factors are discussed and several solutions are proposed which could contribute to making the environment of a community more supportive and conducive to the successful participation of women in leadership roles

Energieanwendung und Rationelle Energiewirtschaft an der Universität Stuttgart;
An account of scientific transfer to the industry: the co-development of an incident analysis tool
This paper is an account of scientific transfer to, and co-development with, a commercial organization. The context is that of safety management of an energy distribution network. A company called EnergyCo approached the authors about their need of an incident analysis method. The company wanted a tool that would help them better capture the causes of incidents during maintenance operations on their network. The expertise they particularly asked for was that of human factors; an angle to work analysis they valued but had not been able to deploy at the time. Beyond the mere technical contents of the tool that was developed, we wish to provide an account of the various transactions, exchanges and collaborations that took place during the development of this method. We will highlight a particular angle of scientific transfer: co-development. In doing so, we will try to convey the message that scientific transfer goes beyond a mere "push" model. Indeed, we are of the opinion that in the case of the development of a method for the industry, transfer can be turned very productively into a codevelopment collaboration

The mechanism of caesium intercalation of graphene
Properties of many layered materials, including copper- and iron-based
superconductors, topological insulators, graphite and epitaxial graphene can be
manipulated by inclusion of different atomic and molecular species between the
layers via a process known as intercalation. For example, intercalation in
graphite can lead to superconductivity and is crucial in the working cycle of
modern batteries and supercapacitors. Intercalation involves complex diffusion
processes along and across the layers, but the microscopic mechanisms and
dynamics of these processes are not well understood. Here we report on a novel
mechanism for intercalation and entrapment of alkali-atoms under epitaxial
graphene. We find that the intercalation is adjusted by the van der Waals
interaction, with the dynamics governed by defects anchored to graphene
wrinkles. Our findings are relevant for the future design and application of
graphene-based nano-structures. Similar mechanisms can also play a role for
intercalation of layered materials.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures in published form, supplementary information

Atomic and Electronic Structure of Graphene and Graphene Intercalation Compounds. X-Ray Standing Wave and Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy Studies
The morphology of graphene/Iridium(111) was studied by x-ray standing wave (XSW) measurements. A dependence of the moire corrugation on the graphene coverage is observed. A comparison with density functional theory (DFT) reveals a discrepancy on the corrugation caused by stress appearing from the cool down from the preparation temperature. The model of rehybridised graphene due to cluster adsorption is supported by a structure analysis. Graphene intercalation compounds were investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and XSW. It is shown that intercalation takes place via cracks and holes at wrinkles and wrinkle crossings. The superstructures of caesium intercalated graphene are resolved. For intercalants interacting mainly via van der Waals forces it could be shown that the graphene-intercalant
distance is dependent on the charge transfer. Moreover, the structure analysis supports that oxygen intercalation leads to quasi freestanding graphene. A rigid-band model is introduced and applied to graphene intercalation compounds. Scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements reveal clear indications for Dirac electron scattering at defects. In these processes the pseudo-spin is not conserved leading to both inter- and intravalley scattering
