    Transport and degradation of phytoplankton in permeable sediment

    In flume and field experiments we demonstrate that interfacial water flows, generated when bottom currents interact with sea bed topography, provide a fast and efficient pathway for the transport of suspended phytoplankton into subsurface layers of permeable sandy sediments. The advective transport, associated with small mounds and ripples as commonly found on shelf sediments, increased penetration depth of unicellular algae (Dunaliella spec.) into sandy sediment (permeability k = 4 × 10−11 m2) up to a factor of 7 and flux up to a factor of 9 relative to a smooth control sediment. The pore water flow field produced a distinct distribution pattern of particulate organic matter in the sediment with subsurface concentration maxima and zones depleted of algae. Flux chamber simulations of advective transport of algae into sands of different grain sizes revealed increasing fluxes, algal penetration depths, and degradation rates with increasing permeability of the sediment. Two experiments conducted in intertidal sand flats confirmed the importance of the advective interfacial transport of phytoplankton for natural settings, showing permeability‐dependent penetration of planktonic algae into embedded sand cores of different grain sizes. The significance of our results is discussed with respect to particulate organic matter flux and mineralization in shelf sands, and we suggest the concept of a decomposition layer

    Quantitative test of thermal field theory for Bose-Einstein condensates

    We present numerical results from a full second order quantum field theory of Bose-Einstein condensates applied to the 1997 JILA experiment [D. S. Jin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol. 78, 764 (1997)]. Good agreement is found for the energies and decay rates for both the lowest-energy m = 2 and m = 0 modes. The anomalous behaviour of the m = 0 mode is due to experimental perturbation of the non-condensate. The theory includes the coupled dynamics of the condensate and thermal cloud, the anomalous pair average and all relevant finite size effects.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Sodium chloride is proposed as a seeding material to avoid these problems.     The concept of motivational operations exerts an increasing influence on the understanding and assessment of problem behavior in people with intellectual and developmental disability. In this systematic review of 59 methodologically robust studies of the influence of motivational operations in negative reinforcement paradigms in this population, we identify themes related to situational and biological variables that have implications for assessment, intervention, and further research. There is now good evidence that motivational operations of differing origins influence negatively reinforced problem behavior, and that these might be subject to manipulation to facilitate favorable outcomes. There is also good evidence that some biological variables warrant consideration in assessment procedures as they predispose the person's behavior to be influenced by specific motivational operations. The implications for assessment and intervention are made explicit with reference to variables that are open to manipulation or that require further research and conceptualization within causal models

    The technique of applying form-invariant, spatial coordinate transformations of Maxwell's equations can facilitate the design of structures with unique electromagnetic or optical functionality. Here, we illustrate the transformation-optical approach in the designs of a square electromagnetic cloak and an omni-directional electromagnetic field concentrator. The transformation equations are described and the functionality of the devices is numerically confirmed by two-dimensional finite element simulations.     Structural Test and Analysis of a Hybrid Inflatable Antenna

    NASA is developing ultra-lightweight structures technology for communication antennas for space missions. One of the research goals is to evaluate the structural characteristics of inflatable and rigidizable antennas through test and analysis. Being able to test and analyze the structural characteristics of a full scale antenna is important to enable the simulation of various mission scenarios to determine system performance in space. Recent work completed to evaluate a Hybrid Inflatable Antenna concept will be discussed. Tests were completed on a 2-m prototype to optimize its static shape and identify its modal dynamics that are important for analytical model validation. These test results were used to evaluate a preliminary finite element model of the antenna, and this model development and correlation activity is also described in the paper

    Safety, tolerability, and impact on allergic inflammation of autologous E.coli autovaccine in the treatment of house dust mite asthma - a prospective open clinical trial

    Background: Asthma is increasing worldwide and results from a complex immunological interaction between genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Autovaccination with E. coli induces a strong TH-1 immune response, thus offering an option for the treatment of allergic diseases. Methods: Prospective open trial on safety, tolerability, and impact on allergic inflammation of an autologous E.coli autovaccine in intermittent or mild persistent house dust mite asthma. Determination of exhaled nitric monoxide (eNO) before and after bronchial mite challenge initially and after nine months of autovaccination. Results: Median eNO increase after autovaccination was significantly smaller (from 27.3 to 33.8 ppb; p=0.334) compared to initial values (from 32.6 to 42.2 ppb; p=0.046) (p=0.034). In nine subjects and a total of 306 injections, we observed 101 episodes of local erythema (33.3%; median of maximal diameter 2.5 cm), 95 episodes of local swelling (31.1%; median of maximal diameter 3 cm), and 27 episodes of local pain (8.8%). Four subjects reported itching at the injection site with a total of 30 episodes (9.8%). We observed no serious adverse events. All organ functions (inclusive electrocardiogramm) and laboratory testing of the blood (clinical chemistry, hematology) and the urine (screening test, B-microglobuline) were within normal limits. Vital signs undulated within the physiological variability. Conclusion: The administration of autologous autovacine for the treatment of house dust mite asthma resulted in a reduction of the eNO increase upon bronchial mite challenge.
