A cross-national study on the antecedents of work–life balance from the fit and balance perspective
Drawing on the perceived work–family fit and balance perspective, this study investigates demands and resources as antecedents of work–life balance (WLB) across four countries (New Zealand, France, Italy and Spain), so as to provide empirical cross-national evidence. Using structural equation modelling analysis on a sample of 870 full time employees, we found that work demands, hours worked and family demands were negatively related to WLB, while job autonomy and supervisor support were positively related to WLB. We also found evidence that resources (job autonomy and supervisor support) moderated the relationships between demands and work–life balance, with high resources consistently buffering any detrimental influence of demands on WLB. Furthermore, our study identified additional predictors of WLB that were unique to some national contexts. For example, in France and Italy, overtime hours worked were negatively associated with WLB, while parental status was positively associated with WLB. Two-loop Yang-Mills diagrams from superstring amplitudes
Starting from the superstring amplitude describing interactions among
D-branes with a constant world-volume field strength, we present a detailed
analysis of how the open string degeneration limits reproduce the corresponding
field theory Feynman diagrams. A key ingredient in the string construction is
represented by the twisted (Prym) super differentials, as their periods encode
the information about the background field. We provide an efficient method to
calculate perturbatively the determinant of the twisted period matrix in terms
of sets of super-moduli appropriate to the degeneration limits. Using this
result we show that there is a precise one-to-one correspondence between the
degeneration of different factors in the superstring amplitudes and
one-particle irreducible Feynman diagrams capturing the gauge theory effective

Imaging spontaneous currents in superconducting arrays of pi-junctions
Superconductors separated by a thin tunneling barrier exhibit the Josephson
effect that allows charge transport at zero voltage, typically with no phase
shift between the superconductors in the lowest energy state. Recently,
Josephson junctions with ground state phase shifts of pi proposed by theory
three decades ago have been demonstrated. In superconducting loops,
pi-junctions cause spontaneous circulation of persistent currents in zero
magnetic field, analogous to spin-1/2 systems. Here we image the spontaneous
zero-field currents in superconducting networks of temperature-controlled
pi-junctions with weakly ferromagnetic barriers using a scanning SQUID
microscope. We find an onset of spontaneous supercurrents at the 0-pi
transition temperature of the junctions Tpi = 3 K. We image the currents in
non-uniformly frustrated arrays consisting of cells with even and odd numbers
of pi-junctions. Such arrays are attractive model systems for studying the
exotic phases of the 2D XY-model and achieving scalable adiabatic quantum

Development of a chemically defined medium and discovery of new mitogenic growth factors for mouse hepatocytes: Mitogenic effects of FGF1/2 and PDGF
Chemically defined serum-free media for rat hepatocytes have been useful in identifying EGFR ligands and HGF/MET signaling as direct mitogenic factors for rat hepatocytes. The absence of such media for mouse hepatocytes has prevented screening for discovery of such mitogens for mouse hepatocytes. We present results obtained by designing such a chemically defined medium for mouse hepatocytes and demonstrate that in addition to EGFR ligands and HGF, the growth factors FGF1 and FGF2 are also important mitogenic factors for mouse hepatocytes. Smaller mitogenic response was also noticed for PDGF AB. Mouse hepatocytes are more likely to enter into spontaneous proliferation in primary culture due to activation of cell cycle pathways resulting from collagenase perfusion. These results demonstrate unanticipated fundamental differences in growth biology of hepatocytes between the two rodent species. Copyright: © 2014 Reekie et al
Isotope correlations as a probe for freeze-out characterization: central 124Sn+64Ni, 112Sn+58Ni collisions
124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni reactions at 35 AMeV incident energy were studied
with the forward part of CHIMERA multi-detector. The most central collisions
were selected by means of a multidimensional analysis. The characteristics of
the source formed in the central collisions, as size, temperature and volume,
were inspected. The measured isotopes of light fragments (3 <= Z <=8) were used
to examine isotope yield ratios that provide information on the free neutron to

Outcomes of allogeneic stem cell transplantation among patients with acute myeloid leukemia presenting active disease: Experience of a single European Comprehensive Cancer Center
Introduction: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) represents a potentially curative approach for patients with relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We report the outcome of relapsed/refractory AML patients treated with ASCT.Method: A retrospective cohort from 1994 to 2013 that included 61 patients with diagnosis of relapsed/refractory AML. Outcomes of interest were transplant-related mortality (TRM), incidence of acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), relapse incidence, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). Statistical significance was set at p<0.05.Results: The median age was 61 years (range 1 to 65). The cumulative incidence of 90 days, 1 year, and 3 years TRM were 60%, 26.7%, and 13.3%, respectively (p< 0.001). The incidence of relapse was 21.7% at 1 year, 13% at 3 years, and 8.7% at 5 years. Median OS was estimated to be 8 months (95CI 3.266-12.734) and median PFS, 3 months (95CI 1.835-4.165).Conclusion: In our cohort, TRM in first years after ASCT remains considerable, but ASCT in this setting seems to be a good choice for AML patients with active disease. However, novel approaches are needed to reduce TRM and relapse in this set of patients
Stratigraphic architecture of the Salento Coast from Capo d’Otranto to S.Maria di Leuca (Apulia, Southern Italy)
The Cretaceous to Quaternary succession of the Apulia Platform cropping out on the eastern coast of the Salento Peninsula shows a special stratigraphic architecture. Whereas on the platform top, i.e. on the Salento Peninsula proper, the succession is at most a few tens of metres thick and is punctuated by unconformities, on the margin and slope of the platform, along the present-day eastern coast of the peninsula, several carbonate systems are laterally disposed and grafted one upon the other. Three of these systems are clinostratified and include well developed reef tracts of Priabonian, early Chattian and early Messinian age.The geologic conclusion of our study is that, since the Late Cretaceous, the eastern coast of the Salento Peninsula grossly coincided with the margin of the Apulia Platform. This paleogeographic element acted as a foreland horst and registered important geodynamic events related to the growth of the adjacent Hellenide and Apennine thrust belts. During the last 60 m.y., the horst carapace was constantly near sea level and sediments were mainly accommodated and preserved on the deep margin and slope of the platform
Age-related delay in information accrual for faces: Evidence from a parametric, single-trial EEG approach
Background: In this study, we quantified age-related changes in the time-course of face processing
by means of an innovative single-trial ERP approach. Unlike analyses used in previous studies, our
approach does not rely on peak measurements and can provide a more sensitive measure of
processing delays. Young and old adults (mean ages 22 and 70 years) performed a non-speeded
discrimination task between two faces. The phase spectrum of these faces was manipulated
parametrically to create pictures that ranged between pure noise (0% phase information) and the
undistorted signal (100% phase information), with five intermediate steps.
Results: Behavioural 75% correct thresholds were on average lower, and maximum accuracy was
higher, in younger than older observers. ERPs from each subject were entered into a single-trial
general linear regression model to identify variations in neural activity statistically associated with
changes in image structure. The earliest age-related ERP differences occurred in the time window
of the N170. Older observers had a significantly stronger N170 in response to noise, but this age
difference decreased with increasing phase information. Overall, manipulating image phase
information had a greater effect on ERPs from younger observers, which was quantified using a
hierarchical modelling approach. Importantly, visual activity was modulated by the same stimulus
parameters in younger and older subjects. The fit of the model, indexed by R2, was computed at
multiple post-stimulus time points. The time-course of the R2 function showed a significantly slower
processing in older observers starting around 120 ms after stimulus onset. This age-related delay
increased over time to reach a maximum around 190 ms, at which latency younger observers had
around 50 ms time lead over older observers.
Conclusion: Using a component-free ERP analysis that provides a precise timing of the visual
system sensitivity to image structure, the current study demonstrates that older observers
accumulate face information more slowly than younger subjects. Additionally, the N170 appears to
be less face-sensitive in older observers
