    The purpose of this guideline is to describe the methods used during ReSolVe project for soil functionality assessment, so they can be implemented in similar studies. A brief introduction first underlines what are the main functions of soil and why maintaining an optimal soil functionality is particularly of major interest in viticulture. Then the different protocols selected for ReSolVe project and this guideline are presented according to the following classification: - Part I: assessment of soil physical and chemical features; - Part II: assessment of soil biological features (ecosystem service provision and providers); - Part III: assessment of rhizosphere biological features; - Part IV: assessment of grapevine quantitative and qualitative indicators reflecting soil functionality. In each part, global objectives of the monitoring are explained (what is it used for, in which cases…) and the parameters to evaluate are listed with their corresponding methodological sheet. In these sheets, instructions and information are given about: - Materials needed to perform the sampling and the measurement - Sampling procedure - Analysis procedure - Possible interpretations and conclusions that can be drawn (value and meaning of the results, indication of reference values when existing, potential limit of the protocol) - Bibliographic references related to the method described - Additional helpful information where appropriate (ex: template of sampling sheet

    Effect of organic treatments on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics in vineyard

    The work aims to investigate the effects of different soil management strategies on carbon sequestration and total nitrogen in areas of vineyards suffering from loss of soil functionality. Treatments, selected for inter-row management, to re-install soil functionality were based on compost or other organic amendments (COMP), green manure (GM), and dry mulching (DM) strategies using winter legumes and cereals. Cover crops were seeded in fall and mown in late spring, leaved in the ground for mulching in DM or incorporated into the uppermost soil layers in GM. Such approaches were investigated in six vineyards in Italy, six in France, and two vineyards in Slovenia and Turkey. The results showed that COMP significantly increased total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (Ntot) in the topsoil after one year of application. Also DM tends to increase significantly TOC in the topsoil, but only after two years. Modelling 20-year carbon stock dynamics in Italy vineyards, the average increase resulted 0.49, 0.34, 0.21 and 0.03 Mg C ha-1 yr-1 for COMP, DM, GM and control, respectively

    Haemolysis as a first sign of thromboembolic event and acute pump thrombosis in patients with the continuous-flow

    Background Despite advances in pump technology, thromboembolic events/acute pump thrombosis remain potentially life-threatening complications in patients with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (CF-LVAD). We sought to determine early signs of thromboembolic event/ pump thrombosis in patients with CF-LVAD, which could lead to earlier intervention. Methods We analysed all HeartMate II recipients (n = 40) in our centre between December 2006 and July 2013. Thromboembolic event/pump thrombosis was defined as a transient ischaemic attack (TIA), ischaemic cerebrovascular accident (CVA), or pump thrombosis. Results During median LVAD support of 336 days [IQR: 182–808], 8 (20%) patients developed a thromboembolic event/pump thrombosis (six TIA/CVA, two pump thromboses). At the time of the thromboembolic event/pump thrombosis, significantly higher pump power was seen compared with the no-thrombosis group (8.2 ± 3.0 vs. 6.4 ± 1.4 W, p = 0.02), as well as a trend towards a lower pulse index (4.1 ± 1.5 vs. 5.0 ± 1.0, p = 0.05) and a trend towards higher pump flow (5.7 ± 1.0 vs. 4.9 ± 1.9 L m, p = 0.06). The thrombosis group had a more than fourfold higher lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) median 1548 [IQR: 754– 2379] vs. 363 [IQR: 325–443] U/L, p = 0.0001). Bacterial (n = 4) or viral (n = 1) infection was present in 5 out of 8 patients. LDH > 735 U/L predicted thromboembolic events/ pump thrombosis with a positive predictive value of 88%. Conclusions In patients with a CF-LVAD (HeartMate II), thromboembolic events and/or pump thrombosis are associated with symptoms and signs of acute haemolysis as manifested by a high LDH, elevated pump power and decreased pulse index, especially in the context of an infection

    Döviz kuru oynaklığının ihracata etkisi; Türkiye-Avrupa birliği ticareti açısından bir değerlendirme

    Dışa açık ekonomilerde, reel döviz kuru oynaklığı ile dış ticaret arasındaki ilişki, bu ülkelerin ekonomileri için uygun bir ticaret politikası oluşturulabilmesi açısından stratejik bir öneme sahiptir. Ayrıca, toplam ticaretinin büyük kısmını tek bir ülke veya bir bölge ile gerçekleştiren ülkeler açısından döviz kuru oynaklığının önemi daha da artmaktadır. Örneğin Türkiye bu grupta yer alan ülkelerden biridir. Türkiye’nin hem ihracat hem de ithalat açısından ilk sıradaki ticaret ortağı Avrupa Birliği (AB)’dir ve Türkiye toplam dış ticaretinin yaklaşık yarısını AB ile gerçekleştirmektedir. Bu nedenle döviz kuru oynaklığı ve dış ticaret arasındaki ilişkinin Türkiye açısından AB ile ticareti dikkate alınarak incelenmesi ayrı bir öneme sahiptir. Dolayısıyla çalışmanın amacı, döviz kuru oynaklığı ile Türkiye’nin AB ile yaptığı ticaret arasındaki ilişkiyi analiz etmektir. Bu amaçla, çalışmada imalat sanayindeki 22 alt sektörden AB’ye yapılan ihracat dikkate alınmakta ve ağırlıklandırma yapılarak döviz kuru oynaklık seviyesinin Türkiye’nin AB’ye yaptığı ihracat üzerinde herhangi bir etkisi olup olmadığı ikinci-nesil panel veri yöntemi kullanılarak araştırılmaktadır. Ampirik analizin bulguları, döviz kuru oynaklığının imalat sanayiinde her sektörü aynı şekilde etkilemediğine işaret etmektedir. Döviz kuru oynaklığı, bazı sektörlerde (ör. tekstil) ihracata olumlu etki yaparken, bazı sektörlerde (ör. deri) olumsuz etki yapmakta, bazılarında ise (ör. ana metal) sonuç anlamsız çıkmaktadır

    Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora spp. Infections in Arab Horses, Southwest of Iran

    Background: Because of the economic importance of the Arab race horses and also the role of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora spp. in abortion and reproductive failure of these animals, we decided to perform this study. Objectives: We designed this study to investigate the seroprevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii and anti-Neospora spp. antibodies in Arab horses from 12 cities of Khuzestan province in southwest of Iran. Materials and Methods: From October 2009 to March 2011, a total of 235 blood samples were collected from jugular veins of Arab horses of different ages and genders from 12 cities of Khuzestan province. All the sera were tested for anti-Toxoplasma antibodies using the modified agglutination test (MAT) and the existence of anti-Neospora antibodies were tested using N-MAT for Neospora spp. Results: According to the MAT results, antibodies to T. gondii were found in 114 (48.5%) of 235 sera with titers of 1:20 in 84, 1:40 in 19, 1:80 in four, 1:160 in four, and 1:320 in three horses. According to the N-MAT results, antibodies to Neospora spp. were found in 47 (20%) of 235 sera with titers of 1:40 in 39, 1:80 in five, and 1:160 in three horses. We did not observe any statistically significant differences regarding age groups and genders between seropositive and seronegative horses for Neospora spp. using chi-square (chi(2)) test, but it seemed that anti-Toxoplasma antibodies were more prevalent in older horses ( >= 10 years old). Conclusions: The results indicated that Arab horses are exposed to these parasites in southwest of Iran. Further research is required to determine the genomic structures of these parasites in Arab horses in southwest of Iran

    Measuring local RF heating in MRI: Simulating perfusion in a perfusionless phantom

    Purpose: To overcome conflicting methods of local RF heating measurements by proposing a simple technique for predicting in vivo temperature rise by using a gel phantom experiment. Materials and Methods: In vivo temperature measurements are difficult to conduct reproducibly; fluid phantoms introduce convection, and gel phantom lacks perfusion. In the proposed method the local temperature rise is measured in a gel phantom at a timepoint that the phantom temperature would be equal to the perfused body steady-state temperature value. The idea comes from the fact that the steady-state temperature rise in a perfused body is smaller than the steady-state temperature increase in a perfusionless phantom. Therefore, when measuring the temperature on a phantom there will be the timepoint that corresponds to the perfusion time constant of the body part. Results: The proposed method was tested with several phantom and in vivo experiments. Instead, an overall average of 30.8% error can be given as the amount of underestimation with the proposed method. This error is within the variability of in vivo experiments (45%). Conclusion: With the aid of this reliable temperature rise prediction the amount of power delivered by the scanner can be controlled, enabling safe MRI examinations of patients with implants. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc
