    Star Formation Rate from Dust Infrared Emission

    We examine what types of galaxies the conversion formula from dust infrared (IR) luminosity into the star formation rate (SFR) derived by Kennicutt (1998) is applicable to. The ratio of the observed IR luminosity, LIRL_{\rm IR}, to the intrinsic bolometric luminosity of the newly (\la 10 Myr) formed stars, LSFL_{\rm SF}, of a galaxy can be determined by a mean dust opacity in the interstellar medium and the activity of the current star formation. We find that these parameters area being 0.5LIR/LSF2.00.5 \le L_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm SF} \le 2.0 is very large, and many nearby normal and active star-forming galaxies really fall in this area. It results from offsetting two effects of a small dust opacity and a large cirrus contribution of normal galaxies relative to starburst galaxies on the conversion of the stellar emission into the dust IR emission. In conclusion, the SFR determined from the IR luminosity under the assumption of LIR=LSFL_{\rm IR}=L_{\rm SF} like Kennicutt (1998) is reliable within a factor of 2 for all galaxies except for dust rich but quiescent galaxies and extremely dust poor galaxies.Comment: Accepted by ApJL: 6 pages (emulateapj5), 2 figures (one is an extra figure not appeared in ApJL

    Multidimensional replica-exchange method for free-energy calculations

    We have developed a new simulation algorithm for free-energy calculations. The method is a multidimensional extension of the replica-exchange method. While pairs of replicas with different temperatures are exchanged during the simulation in the original replica-exchange method, pairs of replicas with different temperatures and/or different parameters of the potential energy are exchanged in the new algorithm. This greatly enhances the sampling of the conformational space and allows accurate calculations of free energy in a wide temperature range from a single simulation run, using the weighted histogram analysis method.Comment: 13 pages, (ReVTeX), 9 figures.     Confocal microphotoluminescence of InGaN-based light-emitting diodes

    Spatially resolved photoluminescence (PL) of InGaN/GaN/AlGaN-based quantum-well-structured light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a yellow-green light (530 nm) and an amber light (600 nm) was measured by using confocal microscopy. Submicron-scale spatial inhomogeneities of both PL intensities and spectra were found in confocal micro-PL images. We also found clear correlations between PL intensities and peak wavelength for both LEDs. Such correlations for yellow-green and amber LEDs were different from the reported correlations for blue or green LEDs. This discrepancy should be due to different diffusion, localization, and recombination dynamics of electron-hole pairs generated in InGaN active layers, and should be a very important property for influencing the optical properties of LEDs. In order to explain the results, we proposed a possible carrier dynamics model based on the carrier localization and partial reduction of the quantum confinement Stark effect depending on an indium composition in InGaN active layers. By using this model, we also considered the origin of the reduction of the emission efficiencies with a longer emission wavelength of InGaN LEDs with high indium composition

    Information Entropy in Cosmology

    The effective evolution of an inhomogeneous cosmological model may be described in terms of spatially averaged variables. We point out that in this context, quite naturally, a measure arises which is identical to a fluid model of the `Kullback-Leibler Relative Information Entropy', expressing the distinguishability of the local inhomogeneous mass density field from its spatial average on arbitrary compact domains. We discuss the time-evolution of `effective information' and explore some implications. We conjecture that the information content of the Universe -- measured by Relative Information Entropy of a cosmological model containing dust matter -- is increasing.Comment: LateX, PRLstyle, 4 pages; to appear in PR

    Naked Singularity and Thunderbolt

    We consider quantum theoretical effects of the sudden change of the boundary conditions which mimics the occurrence of naked singularities. For a simple demonstration, we study a massless scalar field in (1+1)(1 + 1)-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with finite spatial interval. We calculate the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor and explicitly show that singular wave or {\em thunderbolt} appears along the Cauchy horizon. The thunderbolt possibly destroys the Cauchy horizon if its backreaction on the geometry is taken into account, leading to quantum restoration of the global hyperbolicity. The result of the present work may also apply to the situation that a closed string freely oscillating is traveling to a brane and changes itself to an open string pinned-down by the ends satisfying the Dirichlet boundary conditions on the brane.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, references added, to appear in Phys.     The Lyman Continuum Escape Survey: Ionizing Radiation from [O III]-Strong Sources at a Redshift of 3.1

    We present results from the LymAn Continuum Escape Survey (LACES), a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) program designed to characterize the ionizing radiation emerging from a sample of Lyman alpha emitting galaxies at redshift z3.1z\simeq 3.1. As many show intense [O III] emission characteristic of z>6.5z>6.5 star-forming galaxies, they may represent valuable low redshift analogs of galaxies in the reionization era. Using HST Wide Field Camera 3 / UVIS F336WF336W to image Lyman continuum emission, we investigate the escape fraction of ionizing photons in this sample. For 61 sources, of which 77% are spectroscopically confirmed and 53 have measures of [O III] emission, we detect Lyman continuum leakage in 20%, a rate significantly higher than is seen in individual continuum-selected Lyman break galaxies. We estimate there is a 98% probability that 2\leq 2 of our detections could be affected by foreground contamination. Fitting multi-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to take account of the varying stellar populations, dust extinctions and metallicities, we derive individual Lyman continuum escape fractions corrected for foreground intergalactic absorption. We find escape fractions of 15 to 60% for individual objects, and infer an average 20% escape fraction by fitting composite SEDs for our detected samples. Surprisingly however, even a deep stack of those sources with no individual F336WF336W detections provides a stringent upper limit on the average escape fraction of less than 0.5%. We examine various correlations with source properties and discuss the implications in the context of the popular picture that cosmic reionization is driven by such compact, low metallicity star-forming galaxies.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Phenological traits of Kandelia obovata (S., L.) Yong was investigated on the basis of seasonal leaf recruit, leaf death and leaf growth. The seasonal leaf growth was estimated using the logistic growth curve. Leaf recruitment, leaf death and reproductive cycle were obtained by survey data. This study results showed that new leaf recruitment occurred during the year indicating high productivity of mangrove Kandelia obovata forest. The highest leaf recruit was in July, while it was the lowest in January. However, the highest leaf death was in August, whereas it was the lowest in January. Growth pattern of leaves varied among seasons as of winter leaves are taken longger time to get their maximum size, while other season leaves are taken short time to get their maximum size. Period from flowering to mature propagules of K. obovata trees is considered to be around 12 months, while most the propagules become mature in the next spring season (April and May), which indicated shorter reproduction cycle

    Observation of a Highly Spin Polarized Topological Surface State in GeBi2_{2}Te4_{4}

    Spin polarization of a topological surface state for GeBi2_2Te4_4, the newly discovered three-dimensional topological insulator, has been studied by means of the state of the art spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. It has been revealed that the disorder in the crystal has a minor effect on the surface state spin polarization and it exceeds 75% near the Dirac point in the bulk energy gap region (\sim180 meV). This new finding for GeBi2_{2}Te4_{4} promises not only to realize a highly spin polarized surface isolated transport but to add new functionality to its thermoelectric and thermomagnetic properties.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
