Advanced communications payload for mobile applications
An advanced satellite payload is proposed for single hop linking of mobile terminals of all classes as well as Very Small Aperture Terminal's (VSAT's). It relies on an intensive use of communications on-board processing and beam hopping for efficient link design to maximize capacity and a large satellite antenna aperture and high satellite transmitter power to minimize the cost of the ground terminals. Intersatellite links are used to improve the link quality and for high capacity relay. Power budgets are presented for links between the satellite and mobile, VSAT, and hub terminals. Defeating the effects of shadowing and fading requires the use of differentially coherent demodulation, concatenated forward error correction coding, and interleaving, all on a single link basis
Effects of a Conducting Sphere Moving Through a Gradient Magnetic Field
We examine several conducting spheres moving through a magnetic field
gradient. An analytical approximation is derived and an experiment is conducted
to verify the analytical solution. The experiment is simulated as well to
produce a numerical result. Both the low and high magnetic Reynolds number
regimes are studied. Deformation of the sphere is noted in the high Reynolds
number case. It is suggested that this deformation effect could be useful for

Stochastic approximations of hybrid systems
This paper introduces a method for approximating the dynamics of deterministic hybrid systems. Within this setting, we shall consider jump conditions that are characterized by spatial guards. After defining proper penalty functions along these deterministic guards, corresponding probabilistic intensities are introduced and the deterministic dynamics are approximated by the stochastic evolution of a continuous-time Markov process. We would illustrate how the definition of the stochastic barriers can avoid ill-posed events such as "grazing", and show how the probabilistic guards can be helpful in addressing the problem of event detection. Furthermore, this method represents a very general technique for handling Zeno phenomena; it provides a universal way to regularize a hybrid system. Simulations would show that the stochastic approximation of a hybrid system is accurate, while being able to handle ''pathological cases". Finally, further generalizations of this approach are motivated and discussed
Solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation with absorbing boundary conditions and source terms in Mathematica 6.0
In recent decades a lot of research has been done on the numerical solution
of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. On the one hand, some of the
proposed numerical methods do not need any kind of matrix inversion, but source
terms cannot be easily implemented into this schemes; on the other, some
methods involving matrix inversion can implement source terms in a natural way,
but are not easy to implement into some computational software programs widely
used by non-experts in programming (e.g. Mathematica). We present a simple
method to solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation by using a standard
Crank-Nicholson method together with a Cayley's form for the finite-difference
representation of evolution operator. Here, such standard numerical scheme has
been simplified by inverting analytically the matrix of the evolution operator
in position representation. The analytical inversion of the N x N matrix let us
easily and fully implement the numerical method, with or without source terms,
into Mathematica or even into any numerical computing language or computational
software used for scientific computing.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
A microscopic approach to critical phenomena at interfaces: an application to complete wetting in the Ising model
We study how the formalism of the Hierarchical Reference Theory (HRT) can be
extended to inhomogeneous systems. HRT is a liquid state theory which
implements the basic ideas of Wilson momentum shell renormalization group (RG)
to microscopic Hamiltonians. In the case of homogeneous systems, HRT provides
accurate results even in the critical region, where it reproduces scaling and
non-classical critical exponents. We applied the HRT to study wetting critical
phenomena in a planar geometry. Our formalism avoids the explicit definition of
effective surface Hamiltonians but leads, close to the wetting transition, to
the same renormalization group equation already studied by RG techiques.
However, HRT also provides information on the non universal quantities because
it does not require any preliminary coarse graining procedure. A simple
approximation to the infinite HRT set of equations is discussed. The HRT
evolution equation for the surface free energy is numerically integrated in a
semi-infinite three-dimensional Ising model and the complete wetting phase
transition is analyzed. A renormalization of the adsorption critical amplitude
and of the wetting parameter is observed. Our results are compared to available

Olfactory proteins mediating chemical communication in the navel orangeworm moth, Amyelois transitella.
BackgroundThe navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is the most serious insect pest of almonds and pistachios in California for which environmentally friendly alternative methods of control--like pheromone-based approaches--are highly desirable. Some constituents of the sex pheromone are unstable and could be replaced with parapheromones, which may be designed on the basis of molecular interaction of pheromones and pheromone-detecting olfactory proteins.MethodologyBy analyzing extracts from olfactory and non-olfactory tissues, we identified putative olfactory proteins, obtained their N-terminal amino acid sequences by Edman degradation, and used degenerate primers to clone the corresponding cDNAs by SMART RACE. Additionally, we used degenerate primers based on conserved sequences of known proteins to fish out other candidate olfactory genes. We expressed the gene encoding a newly identified pheromone-binding protein, which was analyzed by circular dichroism, fluorescence, and nuclear magnetic resonance, and used in a binding assay to assess affinity to pheromone components.ConclusionWe have cloned nine cDNAs encoding olfactory proteins from the navel orangeworm, including two pheromone-binding proteins, two general odorant-binding proteins, one chemosensory protein, one glutathione S-transferase, one antennal binding protein X, one sensory neuron membrane protein, and one odorant receptor. Of these, AtraPBP1 is highly enriched in male antennae. Fluorescence, CD and NMR studies suggest a dramatic pH-dependent conformational change, with high affinity to pheromone constituents at neutral pH and no binding at low pH

Is Sacral Extension a Risk Factor for Early Proximal Junctional Kyphosis in Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery?
Study designRetrospective cohort study.PurposeTo investigate the role of sacral extension (SE) for the development of proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) in adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery.Overview of literatureThe development of PJK is multifactorial and different risk factors have been identified. Of these, there is some evidence that SE also affects the development of PJK, but data are insufficient.MethodsUsing a combined database comprising two propensity-matched groups of fusions following ASD surgery, one with fixation to S1 or S1 and the ilium (SE) and one without SE but with a lower instrumented vertebra of L5 or higher (lumbar fixation, LF), PJK and the role of further parameters were analyzed. The propensity-matched variables included age, the upper-most instrumented vertebra (UIV), preoperative sagittal alignment, and the baseline to one year change of the sagittal alignment.ResultsPropensity matching led to two groups of 89 patients each. The UIV, pelvic incidence minus lumbar lordosis, sagittal vertical axis, pelvic tilt, age, and body mass index were similar in both groups (p >0.05). The incidence of PJK at postoperative one year was similar for SE (30.3%) and LF (22.5%) groups (p =0.207). The PJK angle was comparable (p =0.963) with a change of -8.2° (SE) and -8.3° (LF) from the preoperative measures (p =0.954). A higher rate of PJK after SE (p =0.026) was found only in the subgroup of patients with UIV levels between T9 and T12.ConclusionsInstrumentation to the sacrum with or without iliac extension did not increase the overall risk of PJK. However, an increased risk for PJK was found after SE with UIV levels between T9 and T12

Psychological distress after stroke and aphasia: the first six months
Objective: We explored the factors that predicted psychological distress in the first six months post stroke in a sample including people with aphasia.
Design: Prospective longitudinal observational study.
Setting and subjects: Participants with a first stroke from two acute stroke units were assessed while still in hospital (baseline) and at three and six months post stroke.
Main measures: Distress was assessed with the General Health Questionnaire-12. Other measures included: NIH Stroke Scale, Barthel Index, Frenchay Aphasia Screening Test, Frenchay Activities Index, MOS Social Support Scale and social network indicators. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of distress at each stage post stroke; and to determine what baseline factors predicted distress at six months.
Results: Eighty-seven participants were able to self-report on measures used, of whom 32 (37%) had aphasia. 71 (82%) were seen at six months, including 11 (16%) with aphasia. Predictors of distress were: stroke severity at baseline; low social support at three months; and loneliness and low satisfaction with social network at six months. The baseline factors that predicted distress at six months were psychological distress, loneliness and low satisfaction with social network (Nagelkerke R2 = 0.49). Aphasia was not a predictor of distress at any time point. Yet, at three months post stroke 93% of those with aphasia experienced high distress, as opposed to 50% of those without aphasia (χ2 (1) = 8.61, P<0.01).
Conclusions: Factors contributing to distress after stroke vary across time. Loneliness and low satisfaction with one’s social network are particularly important and contribute to long-term psychological distress

Cervical Deformity Patients Have Baseline Swallowing Dysfunction but Surgery Does Not Increase Dysphagia at 3 Months: Results From a Prospective Cohort Study.
Study designProspective cohort study.ObjectivesMost studies of dysphagia in the cervical spine have focused on a degenerative patient population; the rate of dysphagia following surgery for cervical deformity (CD) is unknown. This study aims to investigate if surgery for cervical deformity results in postoperative dysphagia.MethodsPatients with CD undergoing surgery from 2013 to 2015 were prospectively enrolled to evaluate dysphagia. Demographic, operative, and radiographic variables were analyzed. The Quality of Life in Swallowing Disorders (SWAL-QoL) was used to measure dysphagia. Paired t test, independent t tests, and bivariate Pearson correlations were performed.ResultsA total of 88 CD patients, aged 61.52 ± 10.52 years, were enrolled. All patients (100%) had 3-month SWAL-QoL for analysis. The baseline preoperative SWAL-QoL was 78.35. This is roughly the same level of dysphagia as an anterior cervical discectomy patient that is 3 weeks removed from surgery. Increasing body mass index (BMI) was correlated with decreased SWAL-QoL score (r = -0.30, P = .001). Age, gender, smoking, and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) showed no significant correlations with preoperative SWAL-QoL. Patients with prior cervical surgery had a lower preoperative SWAL-QoL (P = .04). While 11 patients had acute postoperative dysphagia, CD surgery did not result in lower SWAL-QoL at 3 months (77.26 vs 78.35, P = .53). Surgical variables, including estimated blood loss (EBL), anterior or posterior fusion levels, steroid use, preoperative traction, staged surgery, surgical approach, anterior corpectomy, posterior osteotomy, and UIV (upper instrumented vertebrae) location, showed no impact on postoperative SWAL-QoL. Correction of cervical kyphosis was not correlated to 3-month SWAL-QoL scores or the change in SWAL-QoL scores.ConclusionsWhile patients undergoing surgery for cervical deformity had swallowing dysfunction at baseline, we did not observe a significant decline in SWAL-QoL scores at 3 months. Patients with prior cervical surgery and higher BMI had a lower baseline SWAL-QoL. There were no surgical or radiographic variables correlated to a change in SWAL-QOL score
