Fluorescein angiography compared to three-dimensional measurements by the retinal thickness analyzer in classic choroidal neovascularization
Purpose: To compare and correlate imaging of classic subfoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) with noninvasive 3-dimensional imaging by the retinal thickness analyzer (RTA) to conventional fluorescein angiography (FA). Methods: A total of 29 eyes of 29 consecutive patients with predominantly classic CNV eligible for photodynamic therapy underwent FA and RTA imaging. The FA dimensions of the CNV were measured independently by two graders. With the RTA, masked to FA the size of the CNV itself as imaged in 3-dimensional reconstruction, the size of significantly thickened retina overlying the CNV and the maximum retinal thickness were measured. Results: The mean diameter of the CNV determined from 3-dimensional RTA reconstructions showed an excellent correlation with measurements from FA (r = 0.91, p < 0.001). The area of retinal thickening was by a mean of 0.7 mm in diameter larger and correlated moderately well with the size of the CNV on FA (r = 0.65, p < 0.001). In contrast, there was no correlation between the absolute retinal thickness and the CNV size on FA. Conclusions: Noninvasive quantitative mapping of predominantly classic CNV by RTA is feasible and also allows 3-dimensional measurement of the lesion itself. The results correlate well with FA assessment but visualize different properties of the disease. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel
Staining and peeling of the internal limiting membrane using a fluorescent dye (Rhodamine 6 G)
Aim: To assess whether low concentrations of a fluorescent dye such as Rhodamine 6G would help the unaided human eye visualise the vitreous and the internal limiting membrane (ILM) under standard halogen illumination.Material/methods: The UV/Vis absorption (E) and fluorescence (I) spectra of Rhodamine 6G in water were measured and compared with Indocyanine Green (ICG). Surgery was performed in two rhesus monkeys and consisted of standard pars plana vitrectomy with halogen light source used for illumination. Rhodamine 6G was diluted in balanced salt solution (BSS). A few drops of the dye in a concentration of 0.1% (307 mOsm) were applied over the posterior pole in the air-filled globe and washed out by irrigation after 1 min. Immediately after surgery, the globes were enucleated, fixated and prepared for histological evaluation. Results: In contrast to ICG, both the maximum of the absorption and emission of Rhodamin 6G are very much within the spectral sensitivity of the human eye. The Rhodamine 6G--BSS itself appears red in colour. Using a dye concentration of 0.1%, there was no visible red-staining of the ILM as such. As the dye was irrigated out with BSS, a marked green fluorescence of the fluid within the vitreous cavity was noted. With halogen illumination through a standard 20-gauge light pipe, the dye provided a sufficient green fluorescence to identify and safely remove the ILM and to clearly differentiate areas of peeled from non-peeled ILM. During light microscopy, eyes revealed a peeled ILM demarcation with no signs of acute retinal toxicity. Conclusion: The findings indicate that a fluorescent dye can be used for ILM peeling. Assuming that the fluorophore provides a high enough fluorescence quantum yield after adsorption to the ILM, much lower dye concentrations could be used compared with absorbent dyes, thereby minimising toxic effects
Dispersive approach to the axial anomaly and nonrenormalization theorem
Anomalous triangle graphs for the divergence of the axial-vector current are
studied using the dispersive approach generalized for the case of higher orders
of perturbation theory. The validity of this procedure is proved up to two-loop
level. By direct calculation in the framework of dispersive approach we have
obtained that the two-loop AVV amplitude is equal to zero. According to the
Vainshtein's theorem the transversal part of the anomalous triangle is not
renormalized in the chiral limit. We generalize this theorem for tha case of
finite fermion mass in the triangle loop.Comment: 12 pages, version to appear in Physical Review
Gravitational GUT Breaking and the GUT-Planck Hierarchy
It is shown that non-renormalizable gravitational interactions in the Higgs
sector of supersymmetric grand unified theories (GUT's) can produce the
breaking of the unifying gauge group at the GUT scale ~GeV. Such a breaking offers an attractive alternative to the
traditional method where the superheavy GUT scale mass parameters are added ad
hoc into the theory. The mechanism also offers a natural explanation for the
closeness of the GUT breaking scale to the Planck scale. A study of the minimal
SU(5) model endowed with this mechanism is presented and shown to be
phenomenologically viable. A second model is examined where the Higgs doublets
are kept naturally light as Goldstone modes. This latter model also achieves
breaking of at but cannot easily satisfy the current
experimental proton decay bound.Comment: 11 pages, REVTeX, 1 figure included as an uuencoded Z-compressed

Pion Breather States in QCD
We describe a class of pionic breather solutions (PBS) which appear in the
chiral lagrangian description of low-energy QCD. These configurations are
long-lived, with lifetimes greater than fm/c, and could arise as
remnants of disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) formation at RHIC. We show that
the chiral lagrangian equations of motion for a uniformly isospin-polarized
domain reduce to those of the sine-gordon model. Consequently, our solutions
are directly related to the breather solutions of sine-gordon theory in 3+1
dimensions. We investigate the possibility of PBS formation from multiple
domains of DCC, and show that the probability of formation is non-negligible.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure
Quantum description for a chiral condensate disoriented in a certain direction in isospace
We derive a quantum state of the disoriented chiral condensate dynamically,
considering small quantum fluctuations around a classical chiral condensate
disoriented in a certain direction in isospace. The obtained
nonisosinglet quantum state has the characteristic features; (i) it has the
form of the squeezed state, (ii) the state contains not only the component of
pion quanta in the direction but also the component in the
perpendicular direction to and (iii) the low momentum pions in the
state violate the isospin symmetry. With the quantum state, we calculate the
probability of the neutral fraction depending on the time and the pion's
momentum, and find that the probability has an unfamiliar form. For the low
momentum pions, the parametric resonance mechanism works with the result that
the probability of the neutral fraction becomes the well known form
approximately and that the charge fluctuation is small.Comment: 19 page
Unconventional superconducting pairing by conventional phonons
The common wisdom that the phonon mechanism of electron pairing in the
weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors leads to
conventional s-wave Cooper pairs is revised. An inevitable anisotropy of sound
velocity in crystals makes the phonon-mediated attraction of electrons
non-local in space providing unconventional Cooper pairs with a nonzero orbital
momentum in a wide range of electron densities. As a result of this anisotropy
quasi-two dimensional charge carriers undergo a quantum phase transition from
an unconventional d-wave superconducting state to a conventional s-wave
superconductor with more carriers per unit cell. In the opposite
strong-coupling regime rotational symmetry breaking appears as a result of a
reduced Coulomb repulsion between unconventional bipolarons dismissing thereby
some constraints on unconventional pairing in the Bose-Einstein condensation
(BEC) limit. The conventional phonons, and not superexchange, are shown to be
responsible for the d-wave symmetry of cuprate superconductors, where the
on-site Coulomb repulsion is large.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, more references adde
Effect of friction on disoriented chiral condensate formation
We have investigated the effect of friction on the DCC domain formation. We
solve the Newton equation of motion for the O(4) fields, with quenched initial
condition. The initial fields are randomly distributed in a Gaussian form. In
one dimensional expansion, on the average, large DCC domains can not be formed.
However, in some particular orbits, large instabilities may occur. This
possibility also greatly diminishes with the introduction of friction. But, if
the friction is large, the system may be overdamped and then, there is a
possibility of large DCC domain formation in some events.Comment: 9 pages, including figure
