    The belief that Britain’s empire markets were soft is well entrenched in the literature. It is, however, a belief that has been largely untested. Indeed, the literature does not even offer an explicit definition of softness. This paper attempts to fill this gap by discussing the meaning of the term and, then, posing the question whether between 1870 and 1914 Britain’s fastest growing markets – Australasia and Canada – can in fact be reasonably labelled soft, as has often been assumed. The paper concludes that the demand for British imports in these markets were driven more by income and price considerations than by colonial sentiment or preference.Empire markets, soft markets, British exports, imperial sentiments

    Inference of stress and texture from angular dependence of ultrasonic plate mode velocities

    The theory for the angular dependence of the ultrasonic wave velocity in a symmetry plane of an orthorhombic, stressed material is presented. The two waves having polarizations in this plane are shown to have velocities which can be estimated from measurements of the SH sub 0 and S sub 0 guided modes of a thin plate: the relationship being exact for the SH sub 0 mode and requiring a 10% correction for the S sub 0 mode at long wavelength. It is then shown how stress and texture can be independently inferred from various features of the angular dependence of these two velocities. From the SH sub 0 data, the ability to determine the directions and differences in magnitudes of principal stresses is described and supported by experimental data on several materials. From a combination of the SH sub 0 and S sub 0 data, a procedure is proposed for determining the coefficients W sub 400, W sub 420 and W sub 440 of an expansion of the crystallite orientation distribution function in terms of generalized Legendre functions.     We present spectroscopic and photometric observations of the eclipsing binary V32 located in the central field of the globular cluster NGC 6397. The variable is a single-line spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 9.8783d and a large eccentricity of e=0.32. Its systemic velocity (gamma=20.7 km/s) and metallicity ([Fe/H] -1.9) are both consistent with cluster membership. The primary component of the binary is located at the top of the main-sequence turn-off on the cluster color-magnitude diagram. Only a shallow primary eclipse is observed in the light curve. Based on stellar models for an age of 12Gyr and the mass-function derived from the radial velocity curve, we estimate the masses to be M_p=0.79 Msun and M_s=0.23 Msun. The light curve of V32 can be reproduced by adopting R_p=1.569 Rsun and R_s=0.236 Rsun for the radii and i=85.44 deg for the system inclination. The system geometry precludes observations of the secondary eclipse. The large eccentricity of the orbit is puzzling given that for metal poor, halo binaries the transition from circular to eccentric orbit occurs at an orbital period of about 20 days. We suppose that the orbit of V32 was modified relatively recently by dynamical interaction with other cluster star(s).An alternative explanation of the observed eccentricity calls for the presence of a third body in the system.Comment: AJ, accepte

    Suppression of Kelvon-induced decay of quantized vortices in oblate Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We study the Kelvin mode excitations on a vortex line in a three-dimensional trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at finite temperature. Our stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii simulations show that the activation of these modes can be suppressed by tightening the confinement along the direction of the vortex line, leading to a strong suppression in the vortex decay rate as the system enters a regime of two-dimensional vortex dynamics. As the system approaches the condensation transition temperature we find that the vortex decay rate is strongly sensitive to dimensionality and temperature, observing a large enhancement for quasi-two-dimensional traps. Three-dimensional simulations of the recent vortex dipole decay experiment of Neely et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 160401 (2010)] confirm two-dimensional vortex dynamics, and predict a dipole lifetime consistent with experimental observations and suppression of Kelvon-induced vortex decay in highly oblate condensates.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure
