Agronomic and economic performance of organic, conventional and GM-cotton in Central India - First results of a long-term farming systems comparison
Over the past five years the organic cotton production in India has grown many folds. In the conventional cotton arena, the genetically modified cotton is growing at an unprecedented rate. In view of these developments, it was considered necessary to carry out a systematic comparison between the various cotton production systems common in the area. Further, this research attempts to address the larger issues:
• Put the discussion regarding the benefits and drawbacks of organic agriculture on a rational footing;
• Help to identify challenges for organic agriculture that can then be addressed systematically;
• Provide physical reference and meeting points for stakeholders in agricultural research and development and thus support decision-making and agricultural policy dialogue at different levels
Pfair scheduling of generalized pinwheel task systems
[[abstract]]The scheduling of generalized pinwheel task systems is considered. It is shown that pinwheel scheduling is closely related to the fair scheduling of periodic task systems. This relationship is exploited to obtain new scheduling algorithms for generalized pinwheel task systems. When compared to traditional pinwheel scheduling algorithms, these new algorithms are both more efficient from a run-time complexity point of view, and have a higher density threshold, on a very large subclass of generalized pinwheel task systems.
Identifying Opportunities and Challenges for Creating a Climate-Smart Food System in Vietnam
This study examines various elements of food production, consumption, processing and distribution of food products in Vietnam to identify the challenges and opportunities for developing a sustainable and climate-smart food system. Both primary and secondary data are collected to analyze changing consumption pattern due to income growth and urbanization and identify constraints and opportunities of the current system. The results suggest that rice is already an inferior good for middle class and rich urban populations. These households are consuming more high value food products such as meat, dairy products, fruits, and vegetables. The positive and declining expenditure elasticities of rural population suggest that as income grows rural households will eventually start consuming less rice and more other food products. Since Vietnam’s economy continues to grow with doubling of GDP in the next decade, per capita rice consumption both in urban and rural and across different income will continue to decline
A Rare Case of Post Septic Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis
Temporomandibular joint ankylosis involves fusion of the mandibular condyle to the base of the skull. It is a major clinical problem that affects many patients suffering from facial trauma, infection or systemic disease. The treatment of Temporomandibular joint ankylosis poses a significant challenge because of technical difficulties and a high incidence of recurrence. This report describe a rare case of a 16 year-man with complete inability to open his mouth, diagnosed with unilateral post septic left bony Temporomandibular joint ankylosis. The surgical approach consisted of gap arthroplasty followed by vigorous physiotherapy
Participatory cotton breeding for organic and low input farming in Central India
Up to 80% of world’s organic cotton is produced in India. However, involved producers are facing increased difficulties to find suitable cultivars. Few hybrids selected for high input farming and genetically-modified (GM) cotton, which is explicitly excluded in organic farming, are presently dominating the Indian seed market. In addition farmers have lost their traditional knowledge on seed production and hybrid seed needs to be purchased each season
Thermal instability of an expanding dusty plasma with equilibrium cooling
We present an analysis of radiation induced instabilities in an expanding
plasma with considerable presence of dust particles and equilibrium cooling. We
have shown that the equilibrium expansion and cooling destabilize the radiation
condensation modes and the presence of dust particles enhances this effect. We
have examined our results in the context of ionized, dusty-plasma environments
such as those found in planetary nebulae (PNe). We show that due to the
non-static equilibrium and finite equilibrium cooling, small-scale localized
structures formed out of thermal instability, become transient, which agrees
with the observational results. The dust-charge fluctuation is found to heavily
suppress these instabilities, though in view of non-availability of convincing
experimental data, a definitive conclusion could not be made.Comment: 23 pages, 14 figure
Incommensurate Transverse Anisotropy Induced by Disorder and Spin-Orbit-Vibron Coupling in Mn12-acetate
It has been shown within density-functional theory that in Mn-acetate
there are effects due to disorder by solvent molecules and a coupling between
vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom. We calculate the in-plane
principal axes of the second-order anisotropy caused by the second effect and
compare them with those of the fourth-order anisotropy due to the first effect.
We find that the two types of the principal axes are not commensurate with each
other, which results in a complete quenching of the tunnel-splitting
oscillation as a function of an applied transverse field.Comment: Will be presented at MMM conference 200
Effect of feeding three different formulated feeds having different protein levels on the growth of angel fish (Pterophyllum scalare) juveniles
Experiment was conducted to study the effect of dietary protein level on growth and nutrient utilization by angel fish (Pterophyllum scalare) juveniles. Fifty-four juveniles (average wt. 2-2.5 g) were equally divided in three treatments with each of three replicates. Three formulated diets with graded protein levels, T1 (35% CP), T2 (40% CP) and T3 (45% CP) were fed to juveniles for 45 days. A trend of higher weight gain %, SGR, FER and PER was found with the increased CP level in the feed. Feed intake was similar in all the groups. T3 group fed with 45% CP registered highest weight gain % (43.26 ± 2.07), SGR (0.78 ± 0.04), FER (0.29 ± 0.01), which were significantly higher (P<0.05) than the T1 and T2 groups. Protein digestibility of T2 and T3 groups was significantly higher than the T1 group. Survival was similar in all the experimental groups. Diet with 45% CP with protein energy ratio of 112.62 mg protein/K cal. is ideal for juvenile angel fish for indoor rearing
PAN AIR: A computer program for predicting subsonic or supersonic linear potential flows about arbitrary configurations using a higher order panel method. Volume 2: User's manual (version 3.0)
A comprehensive description of user problem definition for the PAN AIR (Panel Aerodynamics) system is given. PAN AIR solves the 3-D linear integral equations of subsonic and supersonic flow. Influence coefficient methods are used which employ source and doublet panels as boundary surfaces. Both analysis and design boundary conditions can be used. This User's Manual describes the information needed to use the PAN AIR system. The structure and organization of PAN AIR are described, including the job control and module execution control languages for execution of the program system. The engineering input data are described, including the mathematical and physical modeling requirements. Version 3.0 strictly applies only to PAN AIR version 3.0. The major revisions include: (1) inputs and guidelines for the new FDP module (which calculates streamlines and offbody points); (2) nine new class 1 and class 2 boundary conditions to cover commonly used modeling practices, in particular the vorticity matching Kutta condition; (3) use of the CRAY solid state Storage Device (SSD); and (4) incorporation of errata and typo's together with additional explanation and guidelines
