Water waves overtopping over barriers
A numerical and experimental analysis of the wave overtopping over emerged and submerged structures, is presented. An original model is used in order to simulate three-dimensional free surface flows. The model is based on the numerical solution of the motion equations expressed in an integral form in time-dependent curvilinear coordinates. A non-intrusive and continuous-in-space image analysis technique, which is able to properly identify the free surface even in very shallow waters or breaking waves, is adopted for the experimental tests. Spectral singularities for Non-Hermitian one-dimensional Hamiltonians: puzzles with resolution of identity
We examine the completeness of bi-orthogonal sets of eigenfunctions for
non-Hermitian Hamiltonians possessing a spectral singularity. The correct
resolutions of identity are constructed for delta like and smooth potentials.
Their form and the contribution of a spectral singularity depend on the class
of functions employed for physical states. With this specification there is no

Complex Lagrangians and phantom cosmology
Motivated by the generalization of quantum theory for the case of
non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with PT symmetry, we show how a classical
cosmological model describes a smooth transition from ordinary dark energy to
the phantom one. The model is based on a classical complex Lagrangian of a
scalar field. Specific symmetry properties analogous to PT in non-Hermitian

Equidistance of the Complex 2-Dim Anharmonic Oscillator Spectrum: Exact Solution
We study a class of quantum two-dimensional models with complex potentials of
specific form. They can be considered as the generalization of a recently
studied model with quadratic interaction not amenable to conventional
separation of variables. In the present case, the property of shape invariance
provides the equidistant form of the spectrum and the algorithm to construct
eigenfunctions analytically. It is shown that the Hamiltonian is
non-diagonalizable, and the resolution of identity must include also the
corresponding associated functions. In the specific case of anharmonic
second-plus-fourth order interaction, expressions for the wave functions and
associated functions are constructed explicitly for the lowest levels, and the
recursive algorithm to produce higher level wave functions is given.Comment: 17 p.
Glutathione Decrement Drives Thermogenic Program in Adipose Cells
Adipose tissue metabolically adapts to external stimuli. We demonstrate that the induction of the thermogenic program in white adipocytes, through cold exposure in mice or in vitro adrenergic stimulation, is accompanied by a decrease in the intracellular content of glutathione (GSH). Moreover, the treatment with a GSH depleting agent, buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), recapitulates the effect of cold exposure resulting in the induction of thermogenic program. In particular, BSO treatment leads to enhanced uncoupling respiration as demonstrated by increased expression of thermogenic genes (e.g. Ucp1, Ppargc1a), augmented oxygen consumption and decreased mitochondrial transmembrane potential. Buffering GSH decrement by pre-treatment with GSH ester prevents the up-regulation of typical markers of uncoupling respiration. We demonstrate that FoxO1 activation is responsible for the conversion of white adipocytes into a brown phenotype as the "browning" effects of BSO are completely abrogated in cells down-regulating FoxO1. In mice, the BSO-mediated up-regulation of uncoupling genes results in weight loss that is at least in part ascribed to adipose tissue mass reduction. The induction of thermogenic program has been largely proposed to counteract obesity-related diseases. Based on these findings, we propose GSH as a novel therapeutic target to increase energy expenditure in adipocytes.Adipose tissue metabolically adapts to external stimuli. The hypercalcaemia of CYP24A1 inactivation: Newways to improve diagnosis and treatment
This case report presents fluoconazole efficacy to reduce hypercalcaemia and increased urinary calcium excretion in a patient with nephrocalcinosis after a long history of recurrent renal stones caused by a loss-of-function mutation of the CYP24A1 gene. The CYP24A1 gene codes for a key enzyme in the vitamin D endocrine system that protects against vitamin D toxicity by degrading the circulating excess of both 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the hormonal form of vitamin D, and its precursor, 25-hydroxyvitamin D. In order to expedite the identification of this rare disorder and improve therapies to avoid its progression to nephrocalcinosis, this editorial updates the current knowledge on the frequency of CYP24A1-inactivating mutations, the features of their early clinical presentation and progression, and the pathophysiology of vitamin D activation in health and in granulomatous disorders that may help improve current treatment

Coherent Pion Radiation From Nucleon Antinucleon Annihilation
A unified picture of nucleon antinucleon annihilation into pions emerges from
a classical description of the pion wave produced in annihilation and the
subsequent quantization of that wave as a coherent state. When the constraints
of energy-momentum and iso-spin conservation are imposed on the coherent state,
the pion number distribution and charge ratios are found to be in excellent
