Theory of preparation and relaxation of a p-orbital atomic Mott insulator
We develop a theoretical framework to understand the preparation and
relaxation of a metastable Mott insulator state within the first excited band
of a 1D optical lattice. The state is loaded by "lifting" atoms from the ground
to the first excited band by means of a stimulated Raman transition. We
determine the effect of pulse duration on the accuracy of the state preparation
for the case of a Gaussian pulse shape. Relaxation of the prepared state occurs
in two major stages: double-occupied sites occurring due to quantum
fluctuations initially lead to interband transitions followed by a spreading of
particles in the trap and thermalization. We find the characteristic relaxation
times at the earliest stage and at asymptotically long times approaching
equilibrium. Our theory is applicable to recent experiments performed with 1D
optical lattices [T. M\"uller, S. F\"olling, A. Widera, and I. Bloch, Phys.

The ‘Interior World’ of the Nineteenth-Century Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains
Over the last four decades researchers have cast the Maloti-Drakensberg Mountains as a marginal refuge for ‘Bushmen’ amidst constricting nineteenth-century frontiers. Rock art scholarship has expanded on this characterisation of mountains as refugia, focusing on heterogeneous raiding bands forging new cultural identities. Here, we propose another view of the Maloti-Drakensberg: a dynamic political theatre in which polities that engaged in illicit or ‘heterodox’ activities like cattle raiding and hunter-gatherer lifeways set the terms of colonial encounters. We employ the concept of the ‘interior world’ to refigure the region as one fostering subsistence and political behaviours that did not conform to the expectations of colonial authority. Paradoxically, such heterodoxies over time constituted widespread social logics within the Maloti-Drakensberg, and thus became commonplace and meaningful. We synthesise historical and archaeological evidence (new and existing) to illustrate the significance of the nineteenth-century Maloti-Drakensberg, offering a revised southeast-African colonial landscape and directions for future research
PS1-10jh Continues to Follow the Fallback Accretion Rate of a Tidally Disrupted Star
We present late-time observations of the tidal disruption event candidate
PS1-10jh. UV and optical imaging with HST/WFC3 localize the transient to be
coincident with the host galaxy nucleus to an accuracy of 0.023 arcsec,
corresponding to 66 pc. The UV flux in the F225W filter, measured 3.35
rest-frame years after the peak of the nuclear flare, is consistent with a
decline that continues to follow a power-law with no spectral
evolution. Late epochs of optical spectroscopy obtained with MMT ~ 2 and 4
years after the peak, enable a clean subtraction of the host galaxy from the
early spectra, revealing broad helium emission lines on top of a hot continuum,
and placing stringent upper limits on the presence of hydrogen line emission.
We do not measure Balmer H\delta absorption in the host galaxy strong enough to
be indicative of a rare, post-starburst "E+A" galaxy as reported by Arcavi et
al. (2014). The light curve of PS1-10jh over a baseline of 3.5 yr is best
modeled by fallback accretion of a tidally disrupted star. Its strong broad
helium emission relative to hydrogen (He II \lambda 4686/H\alpha > 5) could be
indicative of either the hydrogen-poor chemical composition of the disrupted
star, or certain conditions in the tidal debris of a solar-composition star in
the presence of an optically-thick, extended reprocessing envelope.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
Glucocorticoid-induced hyperglycaemia in respiratory disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The relative risk of glucocorticoid-induced hyperglycaemia is poorly quantified. We undertook a meta-analysis to estimate the association between glucocorticoid treatment and hyperglycaemia, overall and separately in individuals with and without diabetes and underlying respiratory disease. We searched electronic databases for clinical trials of adults randomized to either glucocorticoid treatment or placebo. Eight articles comprising 2121 participants were identified. We performed a random effects meta-analysis to determine relative risks for the associations between glucocorticoid use and both hyperglycaemia and starting hypoglycaemic therapy. In all individuals, the relative risk of hyperglycaemia comparing glucocorticoid treatment with placebo was 1.72 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.50-2.04; p < .001]. The relative risks in individuals with and those without diabetes were 2.10 (95% CI 0.92-5.02; p = .079) and 1.50 (95% CI 0.79-2.86; p = .22), respectively. In all individuals, the relative risk of hyperglycaemia requiring initiation of hypoglycaemic therapy, comparing glucocorticoid treatment with placebo, was 1.73 (95% CI 1.40-2.14; p < .001). In conclusion, glucocorticoid therapy increases the risk of hyperglycaemia in all individuals with underlying respiratory disease but not when diabetic status is analysed separately.Medical Research Council (Grant ID: MC_UU_12015/1)This is the final version of the article. Nonlinear atom-optical delta-kicked harmonic oscillator using a Bose-Einstein condensate
We experimentally investigate the atom-optical delta-kicked harmonic
oscillator for the case of nonlinearity due to collisional interactions present
in a Bose-Einstein condensate. A Bose condensate of rubidium atoms tightly
confined in a static harmonic magnetic trap is exposed to a one-dimensional
optical standing-wave potential that is pulsed on periodically. We focus on the
quantum anti-resonance case for which the classical periodic behavior is simple
and well understood. We show that after a small number of kicks the dynamics is
dominated by dephasing of matter wave interference due to the finite width of
the condensate's initial momentum distribution. In addition, we demonstrate
that the nonlinear mean-field interaction in a typical harmonically confined
Bose condensate is not sufficient to give rise to chaotic behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
An Atlas of Spectrophotometric Landolt Standard Stars
We present CCD observations of 102 Landolt standard stars obtained with the
R-C spectrograph on the CTIO 1.5 m telescope. Using stellar atmosphere models
we have extended the flux points to our six spectrophotometric secondary
standards, in both the blue and the red, allowing us to produce flux-calibrated
spectra that span a wavelength range from 3050 \AA to 1.1 \micron. Mean
differences between UBVRI spectrophotometry computed using Bessell's standard
passbands and Landolt's published photometry is found to be 1% or less.
Observers in both hemispheres will find these spectra useful for
flux-calibrating spectra and through the use of accurately constructed
instrumental passbands be able to compute accurate corrections to bring
instrumental magnitudes to any desired standard photometric system
(S-corrections). In addition, by combining empirical and modeled spectra of the
Sun, Sirius and Vega, we calculate and compare synthetic photometry to observed
photometry taken from the literature for these three stars.Comment: Added referee's comments, minor corrections, replaced Table 1
Multi-color Optical and NIR Light Curves of 64 Stripped-Envelope Core-Collapse Supernovae
We present a densely-sampled, homogeneous set of light curves of 64 low
redshift (z < 0.05) stripped-envelope supernovae (SN of type IIb, Ib, Ic and
Ic-bl). These data were obtained between 2001 and 2009 at the Fred L. Whipple
Observatory (FLWO) on Mt. Hopkins in Arizona, with the optical FLWO 1.2-m and
the near-infrared PAIRITEL 1.3-m telescopes. Our dataset consists of 4543
optical photometric measurements on 61 SN, including a combination of UBVRI,
UBVr'i', and u'BVr'i', and 2142 JHKs near-infrared measurements on 25 SN. This
sample constitutes the most extensive multi-color data set of stripped-envelope
SN to date. Our photometry is based on template-subtracted images to eliminate
any potential host galaxy light contamination. This work presents these
photometric data, compares them with data in the literature, and estimates
basic statistical quantities: date of maximum, color, and photometric
properties. We identify promising color trends that may permit the
identification of stripped-envelope SN subtypes from their photometry alone.
Many of these SN were observed spectroscopically by the CfA SN group, and the
spectra are presented in a companion paper (Modjaz et al. 2014). A thorough
exploration that combines the CfA photometry and spectroscopy of
