Dynamic Normalization for Compact Binary Coalescence Searches in Non-Stationary Noise
The output of gravitational-wave interferometers, such as LIGO and Virgo, can be highly non-stationary. Broadband detector noise can affect the detector sensitivity on the order of tens of seconds. Gravitational-wave transient searches, such as those for colliding black holes, estimate this noise in order to identify gravitational-wave events. During times of non-stationarity we see a higher rate of false events being reported. To accurately separate signal from noise, it is imperative to incorporate the changing detector state into gravitational-wave searches. We develop a new statistic which estimates the variation of the interferometric detector noise. We use this statistic to re-rank candidate events identified during LIGO-Virgo's second observing run by the PyCBC search pipeline. This results in a 7% improvement in the sensitivity volume for low mass binaries, particularly binary neutron stars mergers
Magnetic Helicity in Sphaleron Debris
We develop an analytical technique to evaluate the magnetic helicity in the
debris from sphaleron decay. We show that baryon number production leads to
left-handed magnetic fields, and that the magnetic helicity is conserved at
late times. Our analysis explicitly demonstrates the connection between
sphaleron-mediated cosmic baryogenesis and cosmic magnetogenesis.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure. v2: Minor revisions; matches published version in

Investigation of the fundamental constants stability based on the reactor Oklo burn-up analysis
The burn-up for SC56-1472 sample of the natural Oklo reactor zone 3 was
calculated using the modern Monte Carlo codes. We reconstructed the neutron
spectrum in the core by means of the isotope ratios: Sm/Sm and
Lu/Lu. These ratios unambiguously determine the spectrum index
and core temperature. The effective neutron absorption cross section of
Sm calculated using this spectrum was compared with experimental one.
The disagreement between these two values allows to limit a possible shift of
the low laying resonance of Sm even more . Then, these limits were
converted to the limits for the change of the fine structure constant .
We found that for the rate of change the inequality is fulfilled, which is of the next
higher order than our previous limit.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure

This document fulfills the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics RTCA/DO-178A guidelines, 'Software Considerations in Airborne Systems and Equipment Certification' requirements for document No. 4, which specifies the information necessary for understanding and programming the host computer, and document No. 12, which specifies the software design and implementation standards that are applicable to the software development and testing process. Information on the following subjects is contained: activity recording, communication protocol, coding standards, change management, error handling, design standards, problem reporting, module testing logs, documentation formats, accuracy requirements, and programmer responsibilities
Closed timelike curves in asymmetrically warped brane universes
In asymmetrically warped spacetimes different warp factors are assigned to
space and to time. We discuss causality properties of these warped brane
universes and argue that scenarios with two extra dimensions may allow for
timelike curves which can be closed via paths in the extra-dimensional bulk. In
particular, necessary and sufficient conditions on the metric for the existence
of closed timelike curves are presented. We find a six-dimensional warped
metric which satisfies the CTC conditions, and where the null, weak and
dominant energy conditions are satisfied on the brane (although only the former
remains satisfied in the bulk). Such scenarios are interesting, since they open
the possibility of experimentally testing the chronology protection conjecture
by manipulating on our brane initial conditions of gravitons or hypothetical
gauge-singlet fermions (sterile neutrinos) which then propagate in the extra

Probing the Gravitational Wave Signature from Cosmic Phase Transitions at Different Scales
We present a new signature by which to one could potentially discriminate
between a spectrum of gravitational radiation generated by a self-ordering
scalar field vs that of inflation, specifically a comparison of the magnitude
of a flat spectrum at frequencies probed by future direct detection experiments
to the magnitude of a possible polarization signal in the Cosmic Microwave
Background (CMB) radiation. In the process we clarify several issues related to
the proper calculation of such modes, focusing on the effect of

Sub-millimeter images of a dusty Kuiper belt around eta Corvi
We present sub-millimeter and mid-infrared images of the circumstellar disk
around the nearby F2V star eta Corvi. The disk is resolved at 850um with a size
of ~100AU. At 450um the emission is found to be extended at all position
angles, with significant elongation along a position angle of 130+-10deg; at
the highest resolution (9.3") this emission is resolved into two peaks which
are to within the uncertainties offset symmetrically from the star at 100AU
projected separation. Modeling the appearance of emission from a narrow ring in
the sub-mm images shows the observed structure cannot be caused by an edge-on
or face-on axisymmetric ring; the observations are consistent with a ring of
radius 150+-20AU seen at 45+-25deg inclination. More face-on orientations are
possible if the dust distribution includes two clumps similar to Vega; we show
how such a clumpy structure could arise from the migration over 25Myr of a
Neptune mass planet from 80-105AU. The inner 100AU of the system appears
relatively empty of sub-mm emitting dust, indicating that this region may have
been cleared by the formation of planets, but the disk emission spectrum shows
that IRAS detected an additional hot component with a characteristic
temperature of 370+-60K (implying a distance of 1-2AU). At 11.9um we found the
emission to be unresolved with no background sources which could be
contaminating the fluxes measured by IRAS. The age of this star is estimated to
be ~1Gyr. It is very unusual for such an old main sequence star to exhibit
significant mid-IR emission. The proximity of this source makes it a perfect
candidate for further study from optical to mm wavelengths to determine the

The Indian family on UK reality television: Convivial culture in salient contexts

The final published article is available from the link below, copyright 2012 @ the author.This article demonstrates how The Family (2009), a fly-on-the wall UK reality series about a British Indian family, facilitates both current public service broadcasting requirements and mass audience appeal. From a critical cultural studies perspective, the author examines the journalistic and viewer responses to the series where authenticity, universality, and comedy emerge as major themes. Textual analysis of the racialized screen representations also helps locate the series within the contexts of contested multiculturalism, genre developments in reality television and public service broadcasting. Paul Gilroy’s concept of convivial culture is used as a frame in understanding how meanings of the series are produced within a South Asian popular representational space. The author suggests that the social comedy taxonomy is a prerequisite for the making of this particular observational documentary. Further, the popular (comedic) mode of conviviality on which the series depends is both expedient and necessary within the various sociopolitical contexts outlined
